I really don't understand what I've done to merit Cloud Atlas in my mailbox.

Honored members of ILX Detrius Society, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen: What is there for me to say? Everything wise and witty has long since been said - by minds more mature and talents far greater than mine. For me to thank you as equals would be presumptuous - I am an apprentice in detrius and have much to learn from you all. I can say only that I am proud and happy and that I regard this great thread not so much as an award for what I have achieved, but as a standard to hold against what I have yet to accomplish.

I will boycott the Oscar thread

Your Sister's Sister has one my very favourite scenes of the year, when Iris and Hannah are whispering to each other late at night in bed. So beautifully conceived and played.

Wasn't as enthused about the film as a whole.

Finally got my Magnolia/Magnet pack, along w/ a couple others - 28 in total, just from today (so far). Yikes.

Cahiers top 10:

http://www.fandor.com/blog/daily-cahiers-2012-and-sundances-2013

I missed Cosmopolis, no DVD r1 on the horizon, guess I'll have to wait til spring.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 November 2012 03:27 (eleven years ago) link

i really want to see that faust

I have done bad. I love my pj's. (zachlyon), Sunday, 25 November 2012 04:05 (eleven years ago) link

I did see and like In Another Country the other night, prob not Top 10 material for me tho

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 November 2012 04:08 (eleven years ago) link

Can't imagine Cosmopolis won't end up in my top 10 as it stands on Jan. 1, 2013. Of course, odds are I won't see most of Cahiers' top 10 list until many months later.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Sunday, 25 November 2012 05:04 (eleven years ago) link

the lack of a Cosmopolis R1 release is strange.

Gukbe, Sunday, 25 November 2012 05:05 (eleven years ago) link

also wonder what clever sods will cheat and put it and Holy Motors in the same spot on their list because they're both centred around limos and weird

Gukbe, Sunday, 25 November 2012 05:05 (eleven years ago) link

Critic K3v1n B. L33 on FB sez: "As of now, both the best and worst films on my 2012 movie list are set in Iran. Both are about how filmmaking can save lives under threat of violence and oppression. Only one of them actually demonstrates exceptionally resourceful filmmaking in action. The other is just a recycling of 20th century "third world action movie" cliches, reeking of Hollywood's smugness over the power of its lies."

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Sunday, 25 November 2012 05:05 (eleven years ago) link

let me guess...

Argo pulling slightly ahead of Silver Linings in this year's snob critic pariah pigs blood dumpapalooza.

Argo Is Not a Film

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Sunday, 25 November 2012 06:08 (eleven years ago) link

I've decided to see Silver Linings. Maybe this week. Maybe Life of Pi as well.

Gukbe, Sunday, 25 November 2012 06:08 (eleven years ago) link

Really would like to see Life of Pi stoned, as Dana Stevens recommends.

I don't know that my Best Actress vote right now wdn't go to the girl in Moonrise Kingdom, or Isabelle Huppert

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 November 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

Greta Gerwig in Damsels, atm, or (gah!) Meryl in Hope Springs.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Sunday, 25 November 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

yes on Garwig

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 25 November 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

I'd be happy for Jennifer Lawrence to get it for SLP.

Alba, Sunday, 25 November 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

Marion Cottilard in Rust and Bone.

although i've seen about 5 new movies this year so whatevs.

jed_, Sunday, 25 November 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

Don't see a thread for it here, but dear god is Compliance the single biggest missed opportunity of the year. It could've been one of the great real-life horror movies ever had they not made the decision to cut away to the smirking, pervert prank caller halfway through. Totally undermines the microscopic study of people fundamentally ignorant of their rights bending under presumed authority and instead turns it into a pretentious Phone Booth. (Am now seeing that a number of other reviewers have basically made that same argument.)

That said, Ann Dowd definitely gets swapped into Gerwig/Meryl's slot. The moment when she takes the employee's clothes out to her car without a qualm but pauses to make sure that she cleans up the fast food bags from the floor of the vehicle is just perfect.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 26 November 2012 04:12 (eleven years ago) link

Also, it was already an episode of SVU.

Room 227 (cryptosicko), Monday, 26 November 2012 04:13 (eleven years ago) link

Unless Robin Williams was playing the prank caller in Mrs. Doubtfire getup, I'm not sure I want to watch.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 26 November 2012 04:19 (eleven years ago) link

It's certainly one of the drippier episodes in that it quite resembled a Robin Williams movie.

Room 227 (cryptosicko), Monday, 26 November 2012 04:21 (eleven years ago) link

compliance was directed by homestar runner lol what

I have done bad. I love my pj's. (zachlyon), Monday, 26 November 2012 05:35 (eleven years ago) link

Holy crap! Turns out it was actually the latest installment of Teen Girl Squad!

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 26 November 2012 05:38 (eleven years ago) link

I totally support Gerwig, though she was even better in Frances Ha.

Simon H., Monday, 26 November 2012 05:46 (eleven years ago) link

The Loneliest Planet was an arch bore.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 November 2012 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

what are these SLOTS of which you speak? Simon, we go for the best here, not making allowances for Dead Ernest Borgnine Appeal.
