I owned the first one on tape. I could only afford about one tape every 6 months so this was good value considering I never heard Suede, Green Day, Elastica or the Smiths on the radio and it introduced me to em. I didn't know what 'indie' was, though.

Sit Down is always going to be the worst song on any compilation though, as I realised even at that tender age.

ALAN was the name of the RUTH fan club, and was originally conceived as a way of having personal contact with fans without having to reply to individual letters, which always leads to trouble.

RUTH fans were known as 'Children of ALAN' and embraced the concept enthusiastically (apart from those who found the whole thing inexplicable and grotesque), especially the correspondance area known as Readers' Wives.

I never owned any Shine compilations but I did buy hundreds of singles by bands featured on there. Garbage, Space, Embrace, Catatonia, Ian Brown, Bernard Butler, Seahorses, Symposium, Shed Seven plus loads of bands that didn't make it on to these albums.

There are plenty of bands I still rate highly on there, SFA, Boo Radleys, Mansun, Pulp, Supergrass, Elastica but the shit things I bought outweighed the good.

Oh and the first Dubstar album is great as is No More Talk from the second album. Embrace are the worst band mentioned on this thread so far, the fact they made that big comeback in 2004 makes it even worse.

Pretty sure the singer from Ruth went on to be Aqualung.

i think we supported the Heart Throbs one time after caning vodka all day, leading to probably the most fucked-up cover of Nick Drake's "Parasite" ever

Because they were friends of friends, we got to see them at their first gig, supporting Zodiac Mindwarp at the After Dark, Reading. They were excellent already.

I never knew the sisters were actually sisters of Pete Defreitas really.

I have a couple of Indie Top 20s from around the '88-'90 era picked out of bargain bins a decade after that. Maybe it's just because they were from a little before my indie-time, whereas the Shine series was ubiquitous when I thought I knew everything about music already, but the Indie Top 20s seemed a much more interesting prospect, or at least more varied and less crushingly lads-bants-innit

I never owned a Shine compilation CD, but I know a hell of a lot of people who have owned at least one at some point in the mid to late '90s.

I'm only really familiar with one song of theirs, which was called 'I Don't Know'... I have a very very vague memory of them performing it on The National Lottery(!) - (very very vague because I never actually watched The National Lottery, so chances are it was on in the background while someone else was watching it).

If memory serves one of the guys from Ruth ended up "becoming" Aqualung...

And another bit of trivia: Daf Ieuan, drummer from Super Furry Animals, was a member of Catatonia briefly. He played drums on roughly over half of Way Beyond Blue (including the aforementioned 'Sweet Catatonia') and left to focus on Super Furry Animals.

I thought I'd heard of Ruth bcz I thought they were on a (uhh) Metal Hammer CD I got in 1995, but it turns out to have been a song called "Ruth" by the Wrens, and it is weirding me out that a) the Wrens were on a Metal Hammer CD and b) I didn't realise this until now despite somewhat liking the Wrens a few years after that

(obviously Ruth aren't metal but nor are the Wrens or basically anyone else on the Metal Hammer CD in question)

anyway I have never heard that song before and none of their other song titles ring a bell, but on that evidence 90s Britpop band Ruth < annoying-vocalled 80s French synthpop band Ruth (youtube)

I only realised there were two Poppyheads recently. I have multiple singles by the 90s one, they were like a teen Wonder Stuff, definitely not the same as the Sarah records lot.

Sadly it seems this thread was custom made to cover my teen years.
