you end up with the same shite only it takes up more space

Just this morning I pulled out all of our CD singles to go in a box in the loft.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

Lets' chop Shine10 down to singles I bought at the time..

Hmm...

Super Furry Animals : Ice Hockey Hair
Cornershop : Brimful Of Asha (Norman Cook Remix)

There you go.

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

I can chop it down more than that

Albert Crampus (NickB), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

go!

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

This was the period where every band released cd1 and cd2 versions of singles where fans had to buy both to get the extra tracks. Its why blur beat oasis to that #1.

what a rip off

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

oh and the 7" had a different b-side too. And of course the cassingle did too

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

I recall a few CD3s, too.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

Babybird : Bad Old Man

Is that the track title or just a description of Babybird?

Albert Crampus (NickB), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

It is both.

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

xposts, yeah but all those tracks made for a quite nice mini album in some cases.

A bunch of cack in others.

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

I recall a few CD3s, too.

I had 3cd singles by Orbital that made a nice mini live album.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Space & Cerys Matthews : The Ballad Of Tom Jones

this alone was enough justification for anyone ever involved in indie music to apply the old shotgun to the face.

Dog the Puffin Hunter (ledge), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

that was one of the worst songs ever made.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

And then Tom Jones turned up and everyone had to sing with him.

And the resultant album got a nomination for "best indie album" that year.

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

Remember the line

Cerys - I've never thrown my knickers at you!
Tommy - And I don't come from Wales!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:31 (eleven years ago) link

I actually liked the first Space album when it came out - it was fun!

I can't believe the free pass Shatatonia got at the time

Master of Treacle, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'm very glad that at 16 I thought music was too serious to be fun, and thus avoided Space.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

Catatonia were absolutely fucking godawful.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

I bought "Sweet Catatonia" at the time, it was as good as they got.

More evidence to support my claim that the late 90s was the worst era overall in the history of music.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

Another track i dont remember
Shine 9- Ruth : Fear Of Flying

who???

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

worst song on any of these must be Dubstar. Worst band ever? They were as equally as bad as Toploader.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

nah Dubstar were aight.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

Was gonna say.

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe not 'great', but c'mon, Toploader?

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link

at least toploader fucked off after one atrocity, Dubstar hung around like a bad smell

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link

i fail to see what was so terrible about them AG - they had some neat tunes and the lyrics were good and their album covers were kinda funny and their singer was verrry cute and at least they weren't just bland guitar-pop like so much other stuff in the pages of (new) Raw.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

surprised to find they're still going though... really?

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

oh god the reinvention of RAW magazine. One Britpop Bible Select was bad enough but we didn't need a shittier fortnightly one.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

Toploader are still touring now fwiw

Joanna Motorhead (DJ Mencap), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

I thought they officially split up, announcements, everything.

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

I thought they disappeared after about '97....dunno, thought they were decent, at least singles-wise, hard to see for example how Saint Etienne fans wouldn't take a shine (ho ho) to them

Master of Treacle, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

(Dubstar, I meant)

Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

Probably one of those bands doing nostagia britpop in a basket tours (toploader)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't Dodgy reform? and of course Northern Uproar are getting fans to finance their 4th album.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

and their singer was verrry cute

why they get a free pass from some i think

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

I bought one on double cassette at aservice station during a long trip. Can't remember what number it was but it was mostly wall to wall Britpop iirc.

I bought another similar compilation on a different trip called something like "True Brit Anthems" that was all Shed Seven and Supergrass and was indistinguishable from a Shine compilation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_%28compilation_series%29

I like how someone decided to go through that page and link every artist and song to their wiki entries then chucked it after the first album.

9 hits for ctrl-f "Shed" on that page. 13 Oasises and 10 Blurs in the Battle of Britpop. 11 Casts.

studge_siren.gif (onimo), Friday, 16 November 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

I cant actually decide which of the shine albums was the worst
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_%28compilation_series%29

Do we judge it on the highest number of worst songs per album or discount that album if it actually has some good songs on it?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

Shine 1 (which I bought on holiday at about 15), isn't so bad. Fuck the Cranberries though. I didn't even mind the Dodgy song on there either.

The ALAN Archive

ALAN was the name of the RUTH fan club, and was originally conceived as a way of having personal contact with fans without having to reply to individual letters, which always leads to trouble.

RUTH fans were known as 'Children of ALAN' and embraced the concept enthusiastically (apart from those who found the whole thing inexplicable and grotesque), especially the correspondance area known as Readers' Wives.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 19 November 2012 10:36 (eleven years ago) link

I never owned any Shine compilations but I did buy hundreds of singles by bands featured on there. Garbage, Space, Embrace, Catatonia, Ian Brown, Bernard Butler, Seahorses, Symposium, Shed Seven plus loads of bands that didn't make it on to these albums.

Anyone remember Mum's Gone to Iceland by Bennet?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtAunxgEP_k

I owned every single they put out. So much money wasted!

There are plenty of bands I still rate highly on there, SFA, Boo Radleys, Mansun, Pulp, Supergrass, Elastica but the shit things I bought outweighed the good.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 19 November 2012 10:49 (eleven years ago) link

Oh and the first Dubstar album is great as is No More Talk from the second album. Embrace are the worst band mentioned on this thread so far, the fact they made that big comeback in 2004 makes it even worse.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 19 November 2012 10:51 (eleven years ago) link

Pretty sure the singer from Ruth went on to be Aqualung.

ILM threads where everyone agrees how terrible Britpop was are some of the most boring threads ever btw.

Someone told me 'Das Boot', the closing track on Bennett swansong 'Street Vs. Science', is an early example of beta male misogyny

Never bought a Shine compilation but I do admit to buying this:

Weird - I was listening to the Heart Throbs' 'Dreamtime' for the first time in 20-something years only this morning. Solid band.

They are too good for this horrible thread btw. Listening now they sound like a cross between the Go-Betweens and Lush.

Albert Crampus (NickB), Monday, 19 November 2012 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

i think we supported the Heart Throbs one time after caning vodka all day, leading to probably the most fucked-up cover of Nick Drake's "Parasite" ever

only Brod can judge me (Noodle Vague), Monday, 19 November 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

Because they were friends of friends, we got to see them at their first gig, supporting Zodiac Mindwarp at the After Dark, Reading. They were excellent already.

I never knew the sisters were actually sisters of Pete Defreitas really.

I have a couple of Indie Top 20s from around the '88-'90 era picked out of bargain bins a decade after that. Maybe it's just because they were from a little before my indie-time, whereas the Shine series was ubiquitous when I thought I knew everything about music already, but the Indie Top 20s seemed a much more interesting prospect, or at least more varied and less crushingly lads-bants-innit

xps what I'd give to hear the fucked-up Nick Drake covers of vodka-addled pre-www ilxors

I never owned a Shine compilation CD, but I know a hell of a lot of people who have owned at least one at some point in the mid to late '90s.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

Re: Ruth,

I'm only really familiar with one song of theirs, which was called 'I Don't Know'... I have a very very vague memory of them performing it on The National Lottery(!) - (very very vague because I never actually watched The National Lottery, so chances are it was on in the background while someone else was watching it).

If memory serves one of the guys from Ruth ended up "becoming" Aqualung...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

And another bit of trivia: Daf Ieuan, drummer from Super Furry Animals, was a member of Catatonia briefly. He played drums on roughly over half of Way Beyond Blue (including the aforementioned 'Sweet Catatonia') and left to focus on Super Furry Animals.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

I thought I'd heard of Ruth bcz I thought they were on a (uhh) Metal Hammer CD I got in 1995, but it turns out to have been a song called "Ruth" by the Wrens, and it is weirding me out that a) the Wrens were on a Metal Hammer CD and b) I didn't realise this until now despite somewhat liking the Wrens a few years after that

(obviously Ruth aren't metal but nor are the Wrens or basically anyone else on the Metal Hammer CD in question)

anyway I have never heard that song before and none of their other song titles ring a bell, but on that evidence 90s Britpop band Ruth < annoying-vocalled 80s French synthpop band Ruth (youtube)

a panda, Malmö (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 19 November 2012 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

Ruth put me in mind of bands like The Poppyheads who even had a single called 'Wake Up, America'
http://s.discogss.com/image/R-1441522-1219962065.jpeg

i'm assuming the Sarah Records Poppyheads are a different band

'Separate Lives', by Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson (PaulTMA), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link

I only realised there were two Poppyheads recently. I have multiple singles by the 90s one, they were like a teen Wonder Stuff, definitely not the same as the Sarah records lot.

Sadly it seems this thread was custom made to cover my teen years.
