Nocello on West 55th, anyone? Family coming down from CT to have holiday dinner there.

The review in the Observer from a few weeks ago was as good/brutal.

xp[ost Quite the surprise that a TV personality's restaurant in a tourist trap district would turn out to be shit.

Also I feel like DFW set the gold standard for snarky reviews of bloated, overpriced american attractions, and this is pretty weak in comparison. I like Wells a little better when he takes down silly 1%er restaurants like Eleven Madison Park, because at least that's something that doesn't get done that often.

Can anyone recommend a place for a special lunch for a birthday somewhere downtown preferably in the lower east side, soho, tribeca, maybe village?

hey guys is "Daniel" any good?

^ sarcasm (ken c), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 15:53 (ten years ago) link

I have to say, I was disappointed. The only other restaurant of that "caliber" I've been to was Jean Georges which was amazing. We found Daniel kind of stuffy, like it was aimed at a more old-fashioned moneyed manhattan set and the food just didn't blow us away the way Jean Georges did.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 8 October 2013 16:04 (ten years ago) link

damn. going to have a look at jean georges too - hoping to book somewhere nice for a birthday. really wanted to try 11 madison park but that's booked out :(

^ sarcasm (ken c), Tuesday, 8 October 2013 16:10 (ten years ago) link

Jean Georges does a prix fixe lunch that's great and it think easier to get a seat.

Tried the highly regarded Rye in Williamsburg this weekend. Feeling very bored of these new classic american type places -- very nice atmosphere but the food just relies on fatty, salty and sweet with not much else interesting going on. Everything was so rich and heavy that I couldn't finish.

I've never eaten at the legendary Cafe Edison in Times Square, aka the Polish Tea Room, which is being evicted. Genuinely funny Yelp pans tho.

I didn't know about that place, will have to ask my folks about it, however, just calling it "The Polish Tea Room" is such a great old New York joke

this woman looked at our table like we were a NAMBLA convention and proceeded to gargle "YOU ORDER!" at each of us.

I'm a vegan and I asked if the veggie burger had egg. She said, and I quote "I don't know what is in it. We are not one of those place where we know what is in the food."

Ok someone give me a few money-be-damned recommendations for a 10th wedding anniversary dinner. Would consider going a little outside the city too (e.g. I'm considering Blue Hill Stone Barns but we've been there before)

Pan zur in tivoli and you can stay in the brice marden hotel down the street. That has s restaurant too but it was more hit or miss. Have brunch there.

It's not blue hill fancy but much more than just tapas. CIA chefs.

People of New York, let me ask you a question!

I'm taking my son for his first trip to New York this weekend. Being a 12 year old boy, he wants to eat burgers and pizzas and large sandwiches. We're staying at the Wyndham New Yorker, on 34th and 8th. I realise that area is very much a culinary wasteland, but are there any good cheap eats of the kind he is interested in around there? Thanking you in advance.

Need some recs for an anniversary dinner. Spendy ok but not Per Se level spendy. Reservation 1-1.5 mos in advance doable for a weekend dinner. Preferably Brooklyn or lower Manhattan. Favorite types of food include Japanese, seafood, more innovative end of new American stuff.

Hmm, will definitely consider. Have heard good things. Any others?

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Friday, 1 July 2016 20:28 (seven years ago) link

Assuming by downtown you mean under 14th st.? For sushi I still love Jewel Bako and reservations are easy. Also Sushi Nakazawa if you can get in. Babbo is nice for an intimate meal (love Charlie Bird but it's loud and chaotic). If you venture uptown a bit I honestly would recommend lunch at Le Bernadin or Marea. Lunch is not as pricey as dinner but still so awesome.

Any tribeca recommendations for eating and (cocktail) drinking? I'm pretty clueless on NYC dining. Any cuisine/price range, could be lunch or dinner or both.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 31 December 2016 21:31 (seven years ago) link

Also chelsea recs for dinner, someplace not too loud?

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 31 December 2016 23:24 (seven years ago) link

In Tribeca, Tamarind is quite nice, aesthetically and foodwise, if you'd be into fancy Indian. They have a prix fixe option at lunch.

Chelsea: go to El Quijote next to the Chelsea Hotel. It's an ageless Spanish institution which is still good imo. Lobster specials, tapas, sangria, the works. The bill tends to add up, but you do get very generous portions. It gets busy at night, but it wouldn't be loud in terms of thumping music or anything like that. At lunch they actually play soothing old-school Muzak, which is kind of a rarity nowadays. They also stay open in between lunch & dinner hours, so you could go at 3:30 or something.

Josefa, Saturday, 31 December 2016 23:52 (seven years ago) link

I went to Tamarind the last time I was in NYC, about five years ago, I think? Enjoyed it but would like to try something different. El Quijote sounds right up my alley, thanks!

no… I still do go to that Szechuan place on 7th Ave & 10th, where I sat a table over from Bill de Blasio about ten years back.
