not to sound like anyone's dad but YSI'ing entire albums by independent bands isn't a very cool thing to do

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:30 (eighteen years ago) link

thanks hari!

milton, fwiw, unless the album is horrible ill be buying it anyway.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow, I guess I'm in the minority here, so far I've found this record to be really boring compared to all the other Deerhoof i've heard. Complete straight-ahead indie guitar rock, but maybe i'm missing something, I'm only twice through it... hope it grows on me, i was really excited about it.

b'angelo, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:48 (eighteen years ago) link

it actually has grown on me a little bit, but the first few times I listened to it, I also had the impression that it was too indie for my tastes. some of it still is, but most of it is just a kinder, gentler Deerhoof

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Indie? Or did they learn how to write songs?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Patrick, is that comment sarcastic or not? I would say that the _songwriting_ might be technically more solid, craft-wise, but also say that the composition, in general, is not nearly as powerful or interesting, if that makes sense.

b'angelo, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think Deerhoof suddenly learned how to "write songs" - I mean, one of the reasons I liked them was because of their songs. I like when bands mess with songs, make them go B when I expect A and stuff like that. Greg Saunier has a great knack for doing that (kind of reminds me of early XTC in that way, still very "pop", but hyperactive pop). Runners Four is still basically Deerhoof structure, just a bit less, I don't know, hyper. Maybe this is their Mummer.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

AHHH! Where can I find it? Slsk? YSI please please please

heh, sorry for the bump-tease

john in chicago (frankE), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Hari? I know you'll come through for me... :)

marybeth, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Ahhh

Sorry guys i spent half an hour trying to work out how to convert it to .rar or .zip. Then my girlfriend distracted me.

I will give this another go now.

And also I don't feel bad about doing a YSI for a band on an Indie because I have confidence that 90% of people here will buy the album if they like it. And if they don't like it then fair enough they can delete it and save their money rather than buy another useless product. And really, unless you're a raging capitalist who gives a shit anyway. That said I always buy the CD.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I really have no idea how to zip this up and then find the file!?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Hari, well said. I always purchase any CD, usually vinyl as well, that I download.
Also, Hari, can you just send it track by track like you did for the amazing BD album?
Thanks thanks thanks

marybeth, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:23 (eighteen years ago) link

the bands, maybe

glad you buy the albums

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 4 August 2005 05:55 (eighteen years ago) link

apologies for being snippy about this, Deerhoof of all bands are totally mp3-friendly (though they don't quite give away every track on their CDs) and they're just happy people are listening

I love sharing individual tracks & out of print albums, that Inner Dialogue thread was incredible, but Soulseek should stay in the back rooms or else ILM threads just become 40-60 posts of people asking you to repost tracks 3, 5, 9 and 12

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 4 August 2005 09:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Since I am going out soon I will YSI the first three songs. They are a great opening battlecry and it will give you an idea of how great the album is.

i suppose if deerhoof had a dollar for every person who told themselves that, they would never have a financial concern again. as milton mentioned, deerhoof has always been more than generous with sharing their music over the internet and certainly don't need you yousendingit all over Ilxorland. then again, if being a "raging capitalist" equals "self determination for one's own work", then I guess being a "raging capitalist" isn't such a band thing after all.

milton parker is , as the natives say, OTM.

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 4 August 2005 11:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Hari, could you share the 6th song, Odyssey? I heard it was brilliant and I would love to hear it. Thanks.

marybeth, Thursday, 4 August 2005 13:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Legacy outlives money.

I'm not going to do anymore YSI links. It's my legacy.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks for all that you have shared, Hari. I understand.

marybeth, Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry :/

It's not my music to share, I guess.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:09 (eighteen years ago) link

If you like I'll record a cover of the song and YSI that.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Hari, I'd like that. :)
Maybe you could send it to me through my email. :)

marybeth, Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I've listened to it, I dunno, maybe 10 times.
Sat down with the lyric sheet and listened again about an hour ago.
Brilliant. And I mean that literally. This stuns.
One of the most amazing things I've experienced in this lifetime.
Cheers. And, most of all, thank you Deerhoof, aka the Runners Four.
(It is, without a doubt -
a manual from four visionairies, a how-to guide focused on our collective escape from mediocrity. Beautiful poetry.)
I have changed. I am change.

man I can't wait... I think I'm gonna hold this one out (though I did preview two songs).

i'm slightly disappointed with this album, but thats ok cos i was disappointed with the last two albums when i first heard them & then ended up loving them. does anyone know if theres going to be a vinyl version released?

zappi (joni), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:37 (eighteen years ago) link

"running thoughts" is great but not really into the rest. i think they peaked with 'reveille' (or however it's spelled). please push twee vox back into the mix instead of foregrounding them kthxbye

amon (eman), Sunday, 7 August 2005 05:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I just have to say it again. Brilliant! Like the sun bursting through on a cloudy day. I don't think anyone will top this one for years.

marybeth, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

You're getting me so excited Marybeth! You made me preview 4 songs! *grr* I loved them all.. "Spy on You" and "Lightening Rod, Run" in particular.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Brainwasher,
You ain't heard nothing yet!
I know it doesn't sound right, but listen to it now. And make sure to speak about it in reverence to all of your friends, neighbours, family...anyone who's ear you have. Tell them to listen to Deerhoof.
I do not think I've ever been as excited and brought to such an intense level of connection and refreshment.
It all comes together on this one. I am grateful that The Runners Four have stealed through customs and into my life!

marybeth, Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:23 (eighteen years ago) link

predictibly i love this now, tracks 3-10 especially.
now v. excited about hearing these songs live!

zappi (joni), Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:27 (eighteen years ago) link

AND I cannot emphasize enough how much that this album has to be listened to in it's entirety. It is not just a collection of songs but a story as exciting as I am sure Homer's Odyssey was in his time. An amazing work which works on oh so many levels. I will continue to enjoy this with the same sort of intensity for years to come.

Deerhoof...visionaires!

Marybeth, Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Deerhoof is the best. Thanks for recommending it. I love it. Can't get enough. The best thing they've ever done for sure.

"running thoughts" is my immediate favorite track so far... simply cause that sound doesn't remind me of anything else they've done.

well, i see it's already been said a few times, but i picked this up yesterday (along with the new animal collective) and it's pretty much the best thing ever.. (Feels isnt' too shabby, either.)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 20 October 2005 05:03 (eighteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
This album is awesome, but I really can't fucking take her voice anymore. I love that weird, sort of incongruous afro-pop sounding track. It came in right when I was starting to get bored.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean someone needs to develop a patch that edits out her voice.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:34 (eighteen years ago) link

what i've heard of this record (probably half of it) i find uninspiring and their 'eccentricities' seem to be getting a bit predictable and irritating.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:42 (eighteen years ago) link

But the music is so awesome and I hardly think it's overly "eccentric" outisde of the singing (I actually think the rhythm section sounds kind of like The Who)

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 3 November 2005 05:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you actually think it kind of does?

eek, Thursday, 3 November 2005 07:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Pitchfork in WTF shocka:

Deerhoof release their first straight-up guitar-rock album-- short, dense songs packed into familiar forms, full-bodied vocals for unabashed, often gut-punching melodies, less herk-jerk, less of that house-of-cards spirit that coursed through Reveille and Apple O. Almost twice the length of their other LPs, The Runners Four plays not as one big song, but as three swoops of six or seven, and the result is by turns jubilant, confused, afraid, angry, sad, relieved, and all pretty poignant

Wha? How is this album any more guitar-rock or less "herk-jerk" than Reveille? Nick, care to explain?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 5 November 2005 15:12 (eighteen years ago) link

four years pass...

shit is sounding good right now

El GarBage (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 19 February 2010 16:47 (fourteen years ago) link

four years pass...

I would like Greg Saunier and Brian Chippendale to release a Max Roach-Buddy Rich-style "dueling drums" record.
