it's all good WL, but you're not allowed to come to our party if you're just going to interrupt people all night :)

i like how some sites sometimes post youtube videos but without the actual video screen, ie when it's just for the audio. here for instance (scroll down):

http://thequietus.com/articles/10502-jonathan-meades-interview

idk if it would make pages any easier to load for some or not but it'd be more pleasing visually at least. could do like an audio only checkbox or whatever

thats pretty easy to embed iirc, don't know if ilx would support it tho but you just adjust the heigh part of the youtube embed code to, i think 15

u know how people often talk about "ilx isn't good" or "ilx used to be better" ?

well i think i've identified a possible & heretofore ignored reason for this, with an easy fix. recently noticed that as soon as a "good thread" is created, people start posting "good thread" on it, or "omg thank you for creating this thread i am laughing at it," or something along these lines. why does this make ilx any less good, you ask? well, consider the great films or novels you have seen or read. did moby dick start off "call me ishmael. <- brilliant way to start a novel" ? no! do you ever hear orson welles say "dude we killed this montage" during the opening credit roll of citizen kane? no!!!! so, why shouldn't we hold ilx to the same standard? i suggest each thread be attached to a separate "comments" thread, where people can voice these kinds of opinions without killing the flow of creative effulgence.

flopson, Saturday, 3 November 2012 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

I second flopson's suggestion, but I have an important addition - some of those comments sections are going to be better than other comment sections, and some people might want to talk about that. therefore we need each comments section to have its own meta-comments level.

For all threads of 250 or more posts: every 30 days, the thread is locked and a 3-day "best post" poll conducted. Then the thread is unlocked and allowed to go on as usual for another 30 days. (Algerian Goalkeeper to conduct all polls.)

Made a new stylesheet. Not finished yet (so expect some changes) - colours need sorted in some places, but I like it so far.

You can see it on Preferences → I want to change the way the site looks... And select the "swiss.css" one second bottom. Hope you like it. It will look a bit different across operating systems, because the fonts available on each operating system differs - not a lot I can do about that.

Looks kinda nice! Testing it now.

Oooo.

Keith do you mind if I steal + adapt this for my tiny blog that no one reads? I would change the color scheme at a minimum.

You can do what you like with it Lukas. Best not check with me - best check with Josef Muller-Brockman.

Keith, Sunday, 4 November 2012 00:58 (eleven years ago) link

It'd be nice to be able to see a screenshot of each stylesheet, imo, instead of having to apply each one and reload ILX in turn.

Leeezzarina Sbarro (Leee), Sunday, 4 November 2012 01:31 (eleven years ago) link

I like it a lot...except for the "Add a Post". Something less putty colored maybe?

.formsection { background-color: #BED5C5; }
?

This place just gets smoother and smoother every go-round. Thanks Keith.

My only long-running ILX dream is being able to offer multiple votes in radio button polls, not necessarily any kind of "ranked" deal but just where you could OP3 (or 5 or whatever) instead of OP1. (This would probably also necessitate the poll results also reporting how many voters were involved.) But I just saw that you've said upthread that that'd be complex to implement - so maybe n/m! Things are generally pretty great around here though.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 November 2012 01:54 (eleven years ago) link

it doesn't go to the bottom of the page after i make a post, is this happening for anyone esle? not talking about the new stylesheet btw

this is v nice keith

can i ask why you have a max-height/width for imgs?

caek, Sunday, 4 November 2012 19:19 (eleven years ago) link

Cheers, caek. Sure, it's for a couple of reasons: for aesthetic reasons, the images shouldn't extend beyond the right hand side of the text area (you made me notice I got the numbers wrong here), just as it would be in a book/magazine/paper etc. but also back in the day when some kids would chuck their toys out the pram and when there were arguments they didn't like, or people they didn't like, would post lots of and/or huge images all over a thread, so there are a couple of things in place to prevent that kind of thing.

Keith, Sunday, 4 November 2012 19:42 (eleven years ago) link

hmm. tbh i don't agree with the aesthetic reasons (don't see why headings, bookmarks etc. can be wider than text, but images can't. in fact i think there's an argument for the reverse: long lines of are hard to read, and headings and bookmarks are text, but images aren't) and i'm not sure image bombing is the problem it used to be.

it's not the end of the world, but right-clicking "load image in new tab" on every post on boards like i love photography is a bit of a pain.

caek, Monday, 5 November 2012 11:21 (eleven years ago) link

i totally approve of max-width for the text of posts btw, but if the reason is for readability rather than aesthetic then it should be an absolute measure in ems, not a % of the viewport imo. http://www.webtypography.net/Rhythm_and_Proportion/Horizontal_Motion/2.1.2/

caek, Monday, 5 November 2012 11:23 (eleven years ago) link

Yes that's the bit I changed that you made me think about.

Keith, Monday, 5 November 2012 12:32 (eleven years ago) link

suggestion: remove the max-width for the signature line. readability is not really an issue and the max-width makes of the bookmark link is kind of unpredicatable because some people have long nicks. minor irritant if you habitually bookmark the end of every thread you follow.

caek, Monday, 5 November 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

Yes I was considering just that. I'll try it later and see how it looks.

Keith, Monday, 5 November 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

I tried this. Unfortunately it looks pretty bad - really ragged, so I've left it as it is.

Keith, Monday, 5 November 2012 22:34 (eleven years ago) link

for me, given this is text you click, not just text you look at, it being ragged is less of a concern than the bookmark link being in a predictable location

can i send you a swiss-caek.css which gets rid of max-width for the images and signature lines?

caek, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

a little idea: it would be cool when searching for a thread to be able to sort the results by number of posts in the thread. so for example, i was just looking for a bob dylan thread to post on, there are a million dylan threads, i'd like to know which one is the one that people have used the most so i can continue that thread instead of reviving some random dylan thread with 10 posts.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 8 November 2012 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

^this is a good idea, and along similar lines an "Order Results By Most Recently Updated" option in Search

maybe we should petition Keith to add a button per post you can click which, when enough people have clicked it, turns said post bright flashing red

Site-wide mandatory killfile.

two weeks pass...

beta HideThreads script here, using a bunch of code from ledge's thing upthread and the kilzor script:

http://www.koogy.clara.co.uk/ilx/HideThreads.user.js

there's a new link at bottom of threads to hide / unhide.

threads are removed from lists ie SiteNewAnswers, NewAnswers, SiteNewQuestions only.

will still be visible in Search Results and Blog View (blog view is wildly different from the above. so whilst it's easy enough to find a blocked thread in blog view, it's hard to tell where it ends as it's just a mixed list of h3, span, p and br, there needs to be a div or something around each thread, a single thing to hide.)

hiding a thread won't remove it from bookmarks. Removing it from bookmarks will remove it from bookmarks.
