I got a bottle of the Canadian Club 12 Year as a gift and was initially skeptical because to me Canadian whiskey is Crown Royal, which is what teen metalheads vomit up in your sister's car, but wow it was tasty and didn't last long.

why?

canadian whiskey is just too sweet and character-deprived to merit the proud name of whiskey. it's all top and no bottom.

that's a good description of the Collingwood, but since I've just seen Argo I'm feeling extremely pro-Canadian and will make it my mission to find Canadian whiskeys with bottom.

but i think bourbon tastes super sweet and lacking compared to the ryes i like! for complex and not very sweet, alberta premium 25 year is what i'd pour you. 100% rye grain. complex. farm yards and sawdust, burnt sugar, wintergreen copenhagen, unripe kiwi, spicy as fuck. a perfect mix of wood/water/grain. or wiser's 18 year, which is amazing and full of character and has a subtle, pleasant sweetness balanced by peppery rye spice and a deep, mean pungent bottom end.

A good rye whiskey made in canada is ok by me. It's the stuff that gets labeled as "canadian whiskey" I was downward thumbing.

Good point. In my Irish family, whiskey is a household necessity, like gauze pads and sewing thread - even though I don't like it much on a regular basis. It's for occasions like when your grandmother has cancer and stuff.

It beats the shit out of Bailey's though...I love it when I go to my non-Irish side of the family and they offer a Bailey's like it means anything.

I just bought a bottle of Redbreast 12, which is a pretty easy, flavorful sip. But I only bought it because I couldn't find the cask strength at the time, and when I did come across one I didn't want to buy it and have another bottle of Irish whiskey (which I don't have a lot of use for right now).

Recommend this as a Bailey's alternative:

krakow - the whisky shop on sutter at stockton is practically a whisky museum. cask on market and 3rd is good too - more bourbon (whisky shop is almost all scotch).

and Jack is terrible! I can't imagine what they are gouging you for something like Maker's Mark.

I hear you. I was way guilty of drinking at hotel bars due to laziness during travel in the past year and spending way too much on whiskey

Last night on the phone, my dad cautioned against "getting Dickeled" when drinking the 12 year.

Canadian Club Sherry Cask, good stuff. Sort of my way of not spending the extra 30 odd on sherry cask Scotch.

Rye + sherry flavoring makes for an interesting mix, sort of smokey sweet. Slightly metallic but still enjoyable.

tangle ridge is the most over the top rye + sherry mix. i swear it has to be 10% sherry.

i'm trying the limited edit gibson's grey cup edition that has the slight slight slightest hint of maple syrup/maple sugar in it. super wooddy finish is where the maple makes an appearance.. (tastefully done "flavored" whiskey blend compared to ... also picked upa bottle of wiser's vanilla and it's liek wiser's with vanilla sunlight dish detergent absolute shite.).

Really nice whiskey. Being Scottish this is one hellova find! Now one of my favourites. My wife bought this for me on a trip to Dublin - all because I like breasts and the colour red! Little did she know she found an Irish gem of a whiskey!!!
