do canadian rap stations just satisfy cancon requirements by playing the same amount of drake as u.s. stations now?

awful wedded wein (some dude), Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

ha, no idea. this station existed circa 2002-04 and I am thus possibly the most knowledgeable person about early 2000s can-hop in america

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:00 (eleven years ago) link

btw listening to "Adorn" today and trying to think of how rare it is that you hear a big R&B hit that was pretty much entirely performed, written and produced by one person (like, even The-Dream's big hits all had co-producers).

awful wedded wein (some dude), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

what about Kells tho? (not to disprove you, but another example)

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

no yeah that's a good point, i was trying to think of someone with semi-recent hits who'd be relevenat to that discussion and that's totally who was on the tip of my tongue (although i've never been clear on whether R. is super hands on w/ the beat-making or always has co-producers in the mix)

awful wedded wein (some dude), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

Marsha Ambrosius self-wrote and -produced a few tracks on her last album but they weren't the hits.

from what I understand, Kells usually produces completely by himself but will occasionally have coproducers and for a couple projects has farmed out most of the production

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

I guess his only albums where he's done that are Untitled and to a lesser extent R.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:14 (eleven years ago) link

he also tends to use session musicians on some of his more lush stuff, compared to "Adorn" being just a guy programming everything. but still yeah good call w/ kells.

OHHHH

I read this thread on my phone while drunk on the night bus just now and was really confused cuz it looked like you were talking about kelis

DID u live in MI? is the q I meant to ask

skeevy wonder (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 21 October 2012 03:20 (eleven years ago) link

I've lived within 45 miles of Detroit my whole life and have never had trouble picking up any of the R&B stations.

has no one discussed the full track-by-track commentary on spotify? his divergent, almost rhetorical questions are awesome, 'kaleidoscope dream' and 'candles in the sun' specifically

http://open.spotify.com/album/6VcyVQu3YmkzIWvxHVyCCB

also this album taught me how to spell kaleidoscope correctly and for that, miguel, i thank you

nose, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 15:10 (eleven years ago) link

i'd been meaning to listen to that (after generally avoiding every spotify commentary)

Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

hay everybody, this album is really really good

i kinda don't like the re-do of candles in the sun, seems like it wouldn't even make sense if you didn't know the ADC version

goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

thank you, i was starting to feel like the only person here who sees that version as a downgrade and a bum note for the album

Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i feel the same way

the rest of this album is ridiculously good though

all mods con (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:46 (eleven years ago) link

I feel equally blah about both versions. It would have been the weakest song on the album either way.

i like how simple, loose and reverb-y his guitar playing is, kind of a wildcard element in the sound

goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

I thought he played more guitar but "Pussy is Mine" is the only song on which no one else gets credit.

oh ha, i should have hedged with "the" instead of "his" but i had assumed it was him...

goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:14 (eleven years ago) link

He didn't play it on "Arch & Point"?

oh god. that's almost as bad as the wiki page for Kendrick's joint.

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:21 (eleven years ago) link

the version of the album i downloaded has these really loud rave synths all over and are all tagged "remixed by sh0rty" :-(

flopson, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:22 (eleven years ago) link

lol gross

I don't think anyone has mentioned this but I love how much tape hiss there is on "Arch & Point"

I've been kind of disappointed to see that he doesn't seem to play that song live at all. :(

it does seem like it should be a live staple, doesn't it

strangely heartened to see that miggy has warranted some obsessive wiki attention

It transitions into the rock song "Arch & Point", which has lascivious lyrics,[30] sexually-charged ballet metaphors,[22] bare power pop elements,[6] plopping percussion, and an acoustic guitar coda.[17]

My least favorite song is "Where's the Fun in Forever?" by far. I actually kind of like teh album version of "Candles in the Sun" better than the ADC version, the album version is appropriately rejigged as an Album Closer that works really well, throbs with this "important statement" vibe that isn't in-your-face or preachy, also I really like the hazier feel, and those drum fills when he says "heros often get SHOT" are amazing.

king louie riel (rennavate), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

i also think the john lennon interview at the end of the adc is a little obvious

king louie riel (rennavate), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

strong yolo imagery in beyond good & evil

ogmor, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:55 (eleven years ago) link

My least favorite song is Pussy Is Mine. It just feels a bit cheap, jokes and all.

O-Jah Da Lionmane (longneck), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

^^^ Yeah, I've started to skip it tbh.

Some people have grafittied YOLO on walls.[3][4] It has become a popular Twitter hashtag.[5] Some youth have said that it is their motto,[6][7]

In a news article, the reporter compared the phrase YOLO to Yolo County California.[20]

Well, ILE be damned! (seandalai), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

i love "where's the fun in forever?", it feels so low-key and detached without actually losing its anthemic qualities. vocal arrangements are awesome, so's the steam-train rhythm and i the bit where the bass drops out and alicia and the handclaps come in >>>>>>>>

"pussy is mine" works oddly well as a tossed-off trifle at that point in the album, hard to hate. i guess "adorn" really is my least favourite on the album

lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

lol shine on you stubborn diamond

Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

"Where's the fun..." is great imo, in my top 5 on the album

Well, ILE be damned! (seandalai), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

"The Thrill" is the one I skip.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

if i skip any it's "use me" & "don't look back" cuz sometimes i'm not in the mood for bombastic stadium rock
