i think a writer could ask this question because you can go off record or if the artist doesn't want to talk about it you can just pretend like you didn't ask it, but in a live setting like that it's pretty shitty

in a weird way i think it's kind of better for someone to be able to face down that question live on the air, compared to how gossip blogs constantly insinuate that kind of thing without asking the person directly, or even in print where they can massage the context of their answer with a bunch of "he said, as he shifted uncomfortably in his chair and quickly changed the subject" type stuff.

imo there's just a lot of sweet-voiced men singing love songs throughout the music industry, and they ain't all gay, but in R&B there's been such a strong undercurrent of hip hop bravado the last decade or two that anyone who doesn't carry themselves that way is under suspicion and it's kinda dumb.

That's true to a point. I can think of few situations in which "Are you gay?" asked live isn't designed to (a) elicit a squirm from the subject (b) be sensationalist at the expense of the subject.

yeah i'm not saying the on-air gotcha is better as a rule, just saying in some ways being that bald-faced about it is preferable to the alternative

Not to defend these guys, but "Didn't people arbitrarily make up a gay rumor about you recently?" is a lot less direct than "Are you gay?"

i love the natural way he flips between nervous submission and aggression in the chorus, over and over

the album is really wonderfully sequenced in its final form - almost perfect even if the nature of its release means you can't help but want to make a couple of tweaks

all 3 new songs are completely crucial to it imo - love "where's the fun..." - it's one of those albums where every song seems to balance the final work out just that little bit better

it even makes me happier about my whatever-ness towards "adorn" because it's just a trifle of an intro, it doesn't ask me to be all starry-eyed about it

this album is fantastic. listening to it at home--as opposed to streaming it at work--the whole thing sounded great. lex otm about how well it's laid out. album version of "candles" is hugely superior, not even sure how that was an issue upthread. have to say, I don't see anything else on this being a hit like "Adorn" but maybe that's just a testament to how strong it is as a collection

i do have mild anxiety that he'll end up w/ The-Dream's career arc (three big singles off the first album, even bigger single off the lead single and then radio turns its back) but i have a feeling this'll do well with follow-up singles.

will be happy to be proven completely wrong of course, but in a way lex is sort of right about "adorn"--it is a trifle, a beautiful one that has an immediacy that's really compelling and easy to connect with, and it stands out on the album. but w/e hopefully I'm way off, it would be nice if he caught on in a big way

Actually, I've probably been overstating my ambivalence. It's definitely one of my top ten albums of the year, it's just that my expectations were sky high.

this is an interesting parallel but for whatever reason it feels like miguel has more momentum right now?

intense excitement at watching new video dampened slightly by ad below the video through which I find out chris brown has a single out called 'don't judge me'

or maybe i'm projecting but i guess i always sort of felt like we were on this wild ride with terius, like it was so hilarious & crazy that he turned into a radio star that i wasn't even really surprised when it dried up. terius felt to me like an autuer who happened to trickle up in a weird flash, but miguel feels like a career radio artist who just happens to be sneaking really good, cool shit into his songs.
