fuck those guys

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah it was horrible.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

Those guys are the scum of the earth.

longneck, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link

Couldn't watch it either, but "Are you gay?" should be an off-limits question in all interviews

Evan R, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:52 (eleven years ago) link

(Even in the case of artists like Frank Ocean and—to a much, much lesser extent—Miguel, whose songwriting gives some reason to suspect they might be)

Evan R, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:52 (eleven years ago) link

"Are you gay?" asked by two choads who make gross Rihanna jokes is off limits

i think a writer could ask this question because you can go off record or if the artist doesn't want to talk about it you can just pretend like you didn't ask it, but in a live setting like that it's pretty shitty

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

in a weird way i think it's kind of better for someone to be able to face down that question live on the air, compared to how gossip blogs constantly insinuate that kind of thing without asking the person directly, or even in print where they can massage the context of their answer with a bunch of "he said, as he shifted uncomfortably in his chair and quickly changed the subject" type stuff.

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:59 (eleven years ago) link

imo there's just a lot of sweet-voiced men singing love songs throughout the music industry, and they ain't all gay, but in R&B there's been such a strong undercurrent of hip hop bravado the last decade or two that anyone who doesn't carry themselves that way is under suspicion and it's kinda dumb.

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link

That's true to a point. I can think of few situations in which "Are you gay?" asked live isn't designed to (a) elicit a squirm from the subject (b) be sensationalist at the expense of the subject.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link

like, I guess Tavis Smiley can ask and be cool.

"true to a point" = ship's penultimate post

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i'm not saying the on-air gotcha is better as a rule, just saying in some ways being that bald-faced about it is preferable to the alternative

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

Not to defend these guys, but "Didn't people arbitrarily make up a gay rumor about you recently?" is a lot less direct than "Are you gay?"

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

performing on 106 & Park for 30 minutes this evening?

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link

"use me" totally hit me on the train back to london this evening

i love the natural way he flips between nervous submission and aggression in the chorus, over and over

the album is really wonderfully sequenced in its final form - almost perfect even if the nature of its release means you can't help but want to make a couple of tweaks

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

all 3 new songs are completely crucial to it imo - love "where's the fun..." - it's one of those albums where every song seems to balance the final work out just that little bit better

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

it even makes me happier about my whatever-ness towards "adorn" because it's just a trifle of an intro, it doesn't ask me to be all starry-eyed about it

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

one day, lex, you too will love 'adorn'

barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

this album is fantastic. listening to it at home--as opposed to streaming it at work--the whole thing sounded great. lex otm about how well it's laid out. album version of "candles" is hugely superior, not even sure how that was an issue upthread. have to say, I don't see anything else on this being a hit like "Adorn" but maybe that's just a testament to how strong it is as a collection

rob, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:38 (eleven years ago) link

i do have mild anxiety that he'll end up w/ The-Dream's career arc (three big singles off the first album, even bigger single off the lead single and then radio turns its back) but i have a feeling this'll do well with follow-up singles.

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:43 (eleven years ago) link

er 'even bigger lead single off the second album'

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

will be happy to be proven completely wrong of course, but in a way lex is sort of right about "adorn"--it is a trifle, a beautiful one that has an immediacy that's really compelling and easy to connect with, and it stands out on the album. but w/e hopefully I'm way off, it would be nice if he caught on in a big way

rob, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:06 (eleven years ago) link

In the last few weeks I've argued with a group of music critics who view this album as a pleasant muddle at best (and who prefer Frank Ocean's record).

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:11 (eleven years ago) link

Actually, I've probably been overstating my ambivalence. It's definitely one of my top ten albums of the year, it's just that my expectations were sky high.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:15 (eleven years ago) link

says the guy who was lukewarm on the rest of miguel's career to this point?

la goonies (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:18 (eleven years ago) link

what? he only made my favorite song of the past several years? I thought I was pretty clearly on record as being a huge booster of the Art Dealer Chic EPs and loving the singles from the first album.

this is an interesting parallel but for whatever reason it feels like miguel has more momentum right now?

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:43 (eleven years ago) link

intense excitement at watching new video dampened slightly by ad below the video through which I find out chris brown has a single out called 'don't judge me'

barthes simpson, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:45 (eleven years ago) link

or maybe i'm projecting but i guess i always sort of felt like we were on this wild ride with terius, like it was so hilarious & crazy that he turned into a radio star that i wasn't even really surprised when it dried up. terius felt to me like an autuer who happened to trickle up in a weird flash, but miguel feels like a career radio artist who just happens to be sneaking really good, cool shit into his songs.

he looked pretty awkward kissing that girl against the wall

barthes simpson, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:49 (eleven years ago) link

hey everybody, aren't you excited about the OFFICIAL remix of "Adorn" featuring Wiz Khalifa? no? wait, where are you going?

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:50 (eleven years ago) link

i think that's just a freestyle that they tacked onto the album since it already existed

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:51 (eleven years ago) link

haha i posted that itt the other day

a LOT of 'official remixes' these days start out as some big star doing a freestyle and then the orig. artist's label goes and decides to put their cosign on it

lol @ the headphones scene for that moment in the song, kind of perfect

For whatever it's worth, the internet tells me that's his real life girlfriend Nazanin Mandi.

is 'do you' the official next single then? sounded like a smash to me but i wondered if they'd edit out druuuugs and more importantly how exactly. anyone heard it in the wild?

It'll be fascinating watching "Do You" climb the R&B chart

i think it's always been planned as the follow up to "adorn" and i guess they're going through with that
