The whole gory album cover thing is less a conscious attempt to shock at this point and more of a genre convention for certain strains of death metal/grindcore. I would say that skipping over metal albums with "disgusting" covers is sort of akin to not listening to any rapper who uses the n-word -- i.e., needlessly limiting.

That stuff I'm cool with, although it doesn't immediately make me interested. Maybe because I'm new to it all, the stuff that has sparked my interest hasen't been the stuff that looks like that though, whereas the torche etc. are just begging to be listened to.

I don't find them disgusting, it just seems a bit silly. I 100% know this a ridiculous stance btw.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 15:39 (5 years ago) Permalink

gotcha.

mathematics otm, basically.

Alan N, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 15:42 (5 years ago) Permalink

yeah i was going to say, the Racebannon cover is prob the most euuuurrggghhh cover on this years list, and i guarantee that it will not sound like anything you might expect it to using your cover gross = sounds like this rule.

Neddy Nooooodles (John Justen), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 16:14 (5 years ago) Permalink

hah i bought the Racebannon cd in Braehead shopping centre today from HMV. Just the fact they had it I was enough for me to get it rather than getting the vinyl from somewhere and getting charged a fortune for shipping.
re: album covers, i've NEVER liked that kind of metal cover. But if you don't buy stuff because you dont like teh artwork, then you're going to miss out on some terrific albums. That coffins album mentioned is ACE doom/death.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 18:45 (5 years ago) Permalink

OK I don't like Gojira.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:04 (5 years ago) Permalink

Just for reference, I'm a pretty serious metal fan and I didn't really like anything in this poll above #13, and only 5 things in the top 30. Tastes vary. That's much of what's fun about them...

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 29 January 2009 01:57 (5 years ago) Permalink

serious question: which do you like more-- metal or numbers

gr8080, Thursday, 29 January 2009 02:05 (5 years ago) Permalink

Metal, but numbers pay way better.

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 29 January 2009 04:20 (5 years ago) Permalink

do you like mathmetal? (j/k)

Keep The Dogs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 10:01 (5 years ago) Permalink

I voted in Pazz & Jop. 5/7 of my votes were for metal albums.

But, sadly, I didn't make it to this poll. Next year I promise to vote and write blurbs!

Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 January 2009 11:05 (5 years ago) Permalink

only seven albums and one track?

(i really dig two of your picks, btw.)

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 11:27 (5 years ago) Permalink

I still haven't heard that Jesse Sykes album, Nate. I really should check it out.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 13:46 (5 years ago) Permalink

man, i loved Boris' Smile! what should i check out next from them?

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:39 (5 years ago) Permalink

I suppose you should try Pink then. But early Boris is still superior to both.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:41 (5 years ago) Permalink

ok then, i'll check out both.

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:46 (5 years ago) Permalink

If you wanna check out old but accessible Boris then start with Heavy Rocks better songs than on Pink and Smile.
If you want to check out more Experimental Boris then it has to be Flood or Absolutego which is Boris at their very best.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 15:07 (5 years ago) Permalink

I think amplifier worship is still my fave boris. melvins-y sludge. flood is good too.

Alan N, Thursday, 29 January 2009 17:20 (5 years ago) Permalink

The Rainbow album is really good as well, if you're looking for more accessible Boris stuff.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 29 January 2009 18:26 (5 years ago) Permalink

thanks, guys. i think i need to check out their entire catalog--although i'm kinda weary of anything that sounds like the Melvins (never did like them much).

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 19:02 (5 years ago) Permalink

HERETIC

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 19:05 (5 years ago) Permalink

well, the drone stuff like dronevil doesnt sound like Melvins

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 19:07 (5 years ago) Permalink

heh

Keep The Dawgs Away (Ioannis), Thursday, 29 January 2009 19:12 (5 years ago) Permalink

2008 was an alright year for metal, i have to say.

as for Boris, i can't get into the mix of the new album! dude's vocals are just not strong enough to be featured so prominently. also, Dronevil, Flood, Absolutego ... that was the good stuff. now, it's schlocky Stooges/Melvins meets psych rock thing that i can't get into.

although, admittedly, some of the songs on Pink were really great. and Rainbow was amazing.

--Albums (full lengths and cassettes)--
Asva - What You Don't Know is Frontier
Deathrow/Moloch - Echoes of Eternity
Menace Ruine - The Die is Cast
Moss - Sub Templum
Monument of Urns - Absence
Smorzando - Smrad
Thou/Leech - We Pass Like Night, From Land to Land

--Reissues (albums, not comps)--
Paysage D'Hiver - Kristall & Isa
VĂ©rmyapre Kommando - s/t (demo)
Watain - Casus Luciferi

Cameron Octigan, Thursday, 29 January 2009 19:16 (5 years ago) Permalink

The new stuff is definitely stooges inspired but not as good as Heavy Rocks was (inspired by stooges as well as stoner rock). I prefer Pink when it's more shoegazy.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 19:40 (5 years ago) Permalink

I think amplifier worship is still my fave boris

It's a great album too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 January 2009 22:49 (5 years ago) Permalink

amp worship definitely has a melvins thing going on but I wouldn't let that put you off if you're not a fan. they sound like their own band on it.

also, a warning: somebody smashed into my car during a blizzard while I was listening to this album. just saying.

Alan N, Friday, 30 January 2009 00:08 (5 years ago) Permalink

Wonder what they were listening to :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 January 2009 09:55 (5 years ago) Permalink

Given up on Gojira. Cynic was ok but dont think I could get into it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 January 2009 16:01 (5 years ago) Permalink

a hoy hoy , i see the rap poll is go then. Nice one.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 January 2009 16:11 (5 years ago) Permalink

Umm... possibly. If we could get more than, ha, 5 people nominate then it could work!

a hoy hoy, Friday, 30 January 2009 16:14 (5 years ago) Permalink

Well now deej has got it started I think it will keep ticking over. Remember to keep bumping it so it's near the top of the page.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 January 2009 16:42 (5 years ago) Permalink

and remember that if a few people nominate stuff that others were going to ,it looks like hardly anyone is interested. But those guys will still email you their ballots. Just keep the thread at the top of new answers and everything should be ok. It also helps to generate discussion on the nomination/voting threads too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 30 January 2009 17:20 (5 years ago) Permalink

Not sure about this Opeth. I think i prefer the other 2 I heard. Its ok i suppose.

Maybe ask rolling metal.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 1 February 2009 00:31 (5 years ago) Permalink

yeah, i just posted here because i mentioned Harvey Milk last night

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 1 February 2009 00:41 (5 years ago) Permalink

second thoughts - i've just recently listened to (bought) the wetnurse and hammers of misfortune records mentioned above. and had i heard them earlier, both would probably have come in at or near the top of my list. that hammers double thing might end up being my very favorite record(s) on this list, up there with nachtmystium. still trying to get my head around wetnurse, so that's a tougher call.

problem with trying to put together lists is that i often play catch-up at the end of the year, based on what i think i've missed, and as a result, don't have enough time to fully process stuff. i mean, i was intrigued by moonspell and dir en grey for a few weeks, almost on a dare, but they both got real annoying real fast. or i dunno, the "charmingly horrible" became just plain horrible (but still intermittently awesome). something like that. and while gojira is cool, i'd probably rank it quite a few slots lower now that it's had some time to sink in. same goes for coffins, but in reverse. i like it more every time i hear it.

doesn't really matter, just that i'm experiencing lister's remorse.

Both Wetnurse and Hammers Of Misfortune are great.

Cuntry Matters (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 16:39 (5 years ago) Permalink

a hoy hoy > how is the hip hop poll coming? Post the url on the trax poll as everyone is reading it for the results today and ppl are complaining about the lack of rap in it. So I think you will find you get lots more noms! Go for it!

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 16:40 (5 years ago) Permalink

i dunno. i think it's just not gonna happen. if there was more enthusiasm before i went back to school, it would have been great but i think starting it so late was the problem. next year maybe :)

i'm starting to really get into some of these records though. i have listened to the harvey milk/torche/boris a couple times and like them a lot. still not sure about the jesu/earth i got, and still haven't listened to the wetnurse. That's from my initial handful i grabbed anyway.

one thing i noticed - and like my crazy thing about covers - none of it seemed as heavy as i thought it would be. nothing seems remotely close my cliched idea of just STUPIDLY HUGE RIFFS + SCREAMING/SHOUTING etc. as metal and my reasonable knowledge of heavier and sludgier indie/punk/etc. doesn't seem that far away. So whereas I thought I'd be diving into an ocean I knew nothing about, I already had my feet in the water. Cheers anyway.

LISTEN TO THE WETNURSE

Onimo> hows the listening of the albums coming?

So far from the final 100 I think I've heard

Harvey Milk
Earth
Gojira
Cynic
Marnie Stern
Opeth
Torche
Meshuggah
Boris
Sunn 0)))
Grails

Maybe a couple of others I can't remember. Can't see me ever being more than an occasional metal listener but I'm enjoying working my way through and I'll no doubt find a few things that'll merit repeat listening.

Boring Sign In Name (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 6 February 2009 17:05 (5 years ago) Permalink

In no particular order: Cynic, Opeth, Earth, Boris, Sunn 0)))

Sunn0))) and Boris weren't new to me, the others were.
