if the movie theater sequence was a dream WHY does PSH follow up with his remembrance of them being together in paris in a past life that he suggested in the phone call

It's a little more like Of Mice and Toad adapted by Sir Chauncey Von Poopleberry.

one thing that bugged me about this movie is that they started calling him the master, i feel like it would have been better if they didnt?

Thought the movie's title was going to get slant rhymed when Amy Adams came up to PSH at the bathroom sink.

with the naked dancing scene at first I thought we were seeing the world through Freddie's drunk eyes but then the Amy Adams / PSH at the sink scene made it seem like everyone really had been naked? like he was really trying to take The Cause down some "free love" road and she she was saying "don't go there." but if she felt that way why would SHE take her clothes off in the previous scene, that doesn't make sense

dmr, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i was confused by that too, guess that means PT Anderson has failed as a director, bummer

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

I think the nudity was only in Freddie's mind but Amy Adams was pissed off that PSH was clearly drunk on hooch and did a long stupid bawdy song-n-dance I guess

not sure why she would explicitly associate that with him cheating though

dmr, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:31 (eleven years ago) link

naked dancing seemed pretty clearly to be in Freddie's head to me. I scanned the sink scene as being related to Dodd's attraction to Freddie. And of course indicative of Peggy's control of Dodd.

i thought the nudity was real, and was meant, in part, to demonstrate the "mastery" of PSH's character over his audience as well as alluding to various charismatic cultlike leaders who somehow wind up decreeing that it has been revealed to them that they should all have a lot of sex.

it could also be that Anderson was willing to live in ambiguous so that people would have different perspectives and have something to think about later. *wonders, thinks*

Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:34 (eleven years ago) link

for example, as with my last post, did i mean "leave it ambiguous" or "live in ambiguity"??? *thinks, wonders*

nobody's clothes were piled up anywhere though, were they? explain that!

also wasn't sure what to take away from Freddie trying to do processing on his bar pickup at the end

dmr, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link

xpost PSH ate them all and that's part of why he's chubby these days

Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link

seemed imagined to me, because the disrobing was instantaneous in the middle of the song and there were no clothes lying around and why would amy adams be naked too if she objected to what PSH was doing?

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

you guys are weird at watching movies

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

yeh it was super obviously being imagined

wasnt he dancing with a woman in that scene? thought that was most likely what the jerkoff deal was about

max, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

dmr I scanned that as part of Freddie's happy ending. All the double-talk of the Cause filtered through his trashed brain ended up as just stuff to babble at a pretty girl. Splitting from the Master by showing himself how ridiculous the Cause's cant was.

yeah I thought maybe the sink scene was about how Laura Dern p clearly wanted to bone him (xp to max)

dmr, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

xpost

there was a cut to the middle, and also it seemed like PSH and the crowd were drunker in the nude part, which suggested to me that it was a veeeeeeery long improvised song that somehow involved drinking and stripping. amy adams would be naked because in public she's supportive of PSH, but of course in private she masterfully jerks him off in the bathroom while laying down the rules. also, in the nude song and dance scene she is clearly not having a good time, unlike all the other dancing fools. (for some reason i was paying a lot of attention to amy adams in that scene so i noticed her displeased facial expressions)

Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

if it was supposed to be a dream i don't think that she'd be noticeably displeased. but who knows.

I can see that a little bit but then the next shot is he ends up exactly where he started, hugging on a sand lady, so it's hard to take it as a happy ending

i loved this so much. to me it was him finally finding the path of least resistance, being an animal who only cares about getting drunk and fucking while also comfortably submitting to his master

the final flashback shot of him just being so fucking content being on shore with a sand-woman, no longer adrift

i read it like freddie trying to connect w/ the bar girl. like the processing is the pivotal scene of the first part of the movie -- its freddie forming some kind of connection with PSH -- and here he is just back trying to form that same connection. and maybe to master her the same way psh mastered him

The most poignant scene from that part of the movie imo.

it reminded me of River Phoenix's character breaking down in the last twenty minutes of My Own Private Idaho.

I guess I kinda read it the way you did (xpost to gr8080) initially but my wife was like "how is it any different from the way he was at the beginning, it's not like he had trouble picking up girls before, he's still super damaged"

but I dunno it did seem like him and bar girl were havin fun in a way that him and the department store girl were not

dmr, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

you and your wife both otm

maybe to master her the same way psh mastered him

maybe, but you also read it as an ironic, kind of toothless, repetition of it--one in the service of, like, actual human reciprocity. kinda took that moment as a bit of a utopian fleeting moment of grace type thing.

ryan, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:52 (eleven years ago) link

incidentally Amy Adams is batshit-good here; wish there was more of her.

guys you are overanalyzing the best scene itm

there needs to be a companion film that is 90% Amy Adams and Laura Dern
