OTM, bruce all the way

The Lorne obsession is so annoying. It's like listening to some indie rocker grouse about how he never made it onto American Idol.

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 00:28 (eleven years ago) link

Apparently, there is something worse than Marc talking to musicians; it's Marc talking to alternative artists. This Coop interview is pretty horrible, despite Coop's patience and willingness to engage and talk Marc through his obliviousness.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

Oh man, I was like "why the hell is he interviewing COOP?"

how's life, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:41 (eleven years ago) link

Coop is great on this - you just have to ignore Marc more than usual. He is completely unable to let Coop finish a story without interrupting him.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

So is Marc getting actively more annoying? Or is what I'm experience now just a general part of the cycle of WTF fandom, learning to deal with Marc's faults?

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

the cycle of WTF fandom

I think this is spot on. Sometimes he drives me up the wall, so I have to take a break for a few episodes and come back fresh.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

I think as he has expanded past his general comfort zone--interviewing stand-up comics--his lack of exhaustive knowledge makes his questioning style hard to take. First he started interviewing sketch and improv people, who he holds in a bit of contempt, and the talk all had to be about, "Oh, you're not really the careerist I thought you were." Then it was the musicians, who he always had to find common ground with, hence the "who are your guys?" thing. Now he's interviewing comics guys and artists, but it's very much from this "I was up on this shit back in the 80s" place, which feels very annoying.

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I think that when he goes outside his knowledge base -- like with comedians, even ones he doesn't know, he at least has an understanding of the mechanics of what they do. So the research on where they grew up etc doesn't matter as much to him because he's going to be able to converse with them when it comes down to what they *do*.
Not that he always did it successfully, of course.

But Keyes is otm - with musicians and artists he's got nothing but enthusiasm and it ends up being an unfortunate real life parody of Farley's fanboy Paul McCartney interview on SNL. There's nothing to ground him in the conversation; and in order to have that conversation he either needs to let them do most of the talking, or do some homework.

He won't though. So he'll either get better at it or we'll just be perpetually kind of annoyed, lol

i haven't heard of the last few weeks' guests--i am so much less interested when he strays from comics of his generation or older. i actually just listen to his intros now. i am sorry that his cat Boomer has been missing for the last few days!

Iago Galdston, Monday, 1 October 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

Now he's interviewing comics guys and artists,

fsvo of "now" including less than six months after he started!

(Bagge was in January 2010)

┐(´ー`)┌ (sic), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 00:02 (eleven years ago) link

Was he better at it back then?

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

nah it's always been "I was up on this shit back in the 80s" (except early '90s is his jam rly, Eightball/Hate/the first few years of Hellblazer in one go. Millionaire is obv an exception but he just let him roll on the TCJ interview stories mainly)

┐(´ー`)┌ (sic), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:27 (eleven years ago) link

wow. that moment where Maron asked Gilbert Gottfried "Whatever happened to Charles Rocket?" and then talked over him distractedly as GG tried to tell him about Rocket killing himself pretty much sums up what I hate about Maron's interviewing style.

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 11:22 (eleven years ago) link

also lol at Maron not knowing what 50 Shades of Grey was. But the interview was probably recorded a year ago so...

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:17 (eleven years ago) link

Tbh the idea of Maron knowing about 50 Shades of Grey isn't something I want to contemplate.

controversial cabaret roommate (Nicole), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link

yeah better for all of us if he just doesn't talk about it ever

his Adam and Eve spots are cringeworthy enough

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of when I posted that.

Catching up on older episodes tonight - holy crap that Bob Golub one is great

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 15 October 2012 05:49 (eleven years ago) link

The Dave Alvin one was pretty painful because the only common ground they had was running into each other in Hollywood like 25 years ago.

Everything You Like Sucks, Monday, 15 October 2012 08:39 (eleven years ago) link

I enjoyed Dave Alvin telling stories. He should have his own podcast.

This Jimmy Walker episode is so funny.

Jimmy Walker just steamrolls over him. Jimmy still one entertaining dude.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 October 2012 15:26 (eleven years ago) link

I was pissed when Maron cut him off at the end

Binders Full of Mittens (President Keyes), Thursday, 25 October 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

Oh shit, yeah...I just got to the end and Maron basically shut a door in his face.

ok i will listen to the heidecker episode. also curious about pauly shore ep.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 2 November 2012 16:55 (eleven years ago) link

The Chad Daniels one was really good. I'd never heard/heard of that guy before, but he was a great guest.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 November 2012 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

I liked the Jimmy Walker one quite a bit. Lots of great stories.

Pauly Shore interview is good so far, but it sounds more like two guys in line for movie tickets catching up after not having seen each other for about five years.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 November 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah the Pauly Shore interview wasn't bad! Kinda wish that Maron hadn't kept circling back to his 'Comedy Store is haunted, dark weird place haha' hobbyhorse. It was cool hearing about the comics who went through there, the stuff about Mitzi getting Maron to wear a scarf and the guy to wear a yellow suit was p funny

I saw The Comedy recently, so I listened to the Heidecker interview hoping to hear a discussion on the film. Oh well. I did get to learn a lot about the bands Heidecker was in as a youth, though :/

DavidM, Sunday, 4 November 2012 09:05 (eleven years ago) link

It's true, he took upwards of 15 seconds to embarrassedly name some and say that two of them weren't serious

sug night (sic), Sunday, 4 November 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

i thought they talked about that movie a fair amount?

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Sunday, 4 November 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

Heidecker even made mention of Maron keeping digging for more and more info on the bands after he mentioned them only in passing. They talked about the Tim and Eric film a lot, but the talk on The Comedy was cut short on a 'we'll talk more about this some other time?' ending.

DavidM, Sunday, 4 November 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

This Jimmy Walker episode is so funny.

1) Consider yourself lucky that the guitar question didn't end up in a three-song jam
2) Apart from the fact that they did discuss The Comedy, how many other WTFs with people who normally write and perform and produce and direct and generate hours upon hours of their own work have gone into long discussions of a single hired acting job?

sug night (sic), Sunday, 4 November 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

yea they did talk abt it a bit right? maron gave his 'film studies major' take on it

johnny crunch, Monday, 5 November 2012 01:43 (eleven years ago) link

A wtf with colt cabana? Hello sam bait! Ridiculously excited about this, even if maron talking wrestling is going to be super embarrassing. (cabana is p much the worlds best comedy wrestler and has a wtf like hour podcast with wrestlers every week. Also he did stand up for a couple years, dunno if he was any good though.)

okay i haven't listened to this epo yet but I heard him on Sklarboro County and it turns out that I love colt cabana! I have started listening to his podcast. Mick Foley! The Brooklyn Brawler? HOORAY.
can't wait to hear this ep now.

Mascis interview: "What are your favorite chords?"

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 November 2012 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

oh god

"I have a pair of thick green bellbottoms that are pretty cool"

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 26 November 2012 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

I love Maron, and I often applaud him for attempting musician interviews, but this Mascis experiment is a near total failure.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 November 2012 18:18 (eleven years ago) link

Just that opening framing of Nevermind and Green Mind as the records that blew Maron's mind was nuts.

Binders Full of Mittens (President Keyes), Monday, 26 November 2012 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

About 30 minutes in J. seems to realize Marc is a nutter and begins to treat it like an interview by Nardwuar. Which is pretty much is, except Nardwuar does more research for his interviews.
