the "I didn't realize we were recording" framing device is kind of infuriating.
I like "Pussy Is Mine", but this.
― The Reverend, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:44 (eleven years ago) link
I'll probably just end up inserting the original version, which as far as I can tell is otherwise identical into the running order.
― The Reverend, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:45 (eleven years ago) link
i think there are at least a couple songs on here that could be considered a 'wild curveball' if the whole album was being heard for the first time at once
― some dude, Monday, September 24, 2012 2:39 PM (18 minutes ago) Bookmark
yeah i mean definitely "use me" and "don't look back" were pretty surprising to me and if i was just hearing this blind i'd be pretty engrossed with where it goes sonically
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 19:02 (eleven years ago) link
it's easy to forget how much of an outlier "Adorn" is because it's the first track/lead single, too
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link
it's funny, when i talked to him he seemed kind of, like, ashamed by "how many drinks" and to a lesser extent "adorn" because they're the most r&b songs on the record and the ones most aimed at the radio but even those are pretty damn singular sounding for radio joints
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 19:11 (eleven years ago) link
As cheesy as this sounds, I'm gratified that Miguel still managed to take "Adorn" to #1; it was no....sure thing.
― taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 24 September 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link
oh definitely.... it's a special song. that anecdote that al relayed about the radio DJs mirrors the reaction i've seen/heard from most people who have heard the song. it's just such a gorgeous, likable song.
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 19:19 (eleven years ago) link
as a lady i am very pro-'pussy is mine'
― maura, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:34 (eleven years ago) link
the Baltimore station STILL plays the 2-minute "Adorn," which is kind of charming but mostly frustrating, doesn't feel complete to me anymore
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link
loving the first listen. "do you" would definitely be a curve ball.
in fact hes about curve balls (except for adorn)
very important: thank god a short album
― moullet, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link
A+ album sequencing here (had nearly worn out the latter but once it kicked in, it suddenly seemed fresh)
otm
a+ sequencing throughout, which i worried about having gotten to know half the tracks through three song eps
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:54 (eleven years ago) link
I feel like I'm going to end up listening to songs from this over and over rather than the album over and over.

Which is the same as happened with AIWIY and ADC.
― The Reverend, Monday, September 24, 2012 2:00 PM (4 hours ago)
what songs are you skipping on AIWIY? 0_o
psyched to listen to this, and that 33-song thing!

yeah, i'm not a lady, but i'm a huge fan of the track too
― heiswagger (rennavate), Monday, 24 September 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link
pretty thrilled w/ the final album, although i think i liked the original "Candle" more than most people and he really fucked it up on the album imo
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link
AIWIY is probably my favorite album of the past 3 years. close call between it and LTTP
xxp to myself
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Monday, 24 September 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link
yeah I agree that the old version is better but I sorta get what he was going for sonically at least with it coming after "pussy is mine"
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link
yeah it makes a certain sense. maybe knowing it was the live band arrangement makes me hear it that way but it doesn't sound studio enough to fit w/ the rest of the album imo.
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 22:22 (eleven years ago) link
What I love most about this boy is how much he loves to sing. I could listen to "Where's The Fun in Forever" a cappella.
― taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 24 September 2012 22:25 (eleven years ago) link
his voice is insane, i was boggling at that "Adorn" live youtube upthread today
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 22:27 (eleven years ago) link
Like I said, it never really clicked with me beyond the singles even though I gave it plenty of opportunities. I did delete that out of place electro song right off the bat tho. Hearing that it's your favorite album of the past few years is kind of bizarre to me tbh.

so otm, his is my favorite voice in r&b right now. i think the one i posted a couple weeks ago is an even better example

ok first time hearing 'the thrill' and it's kind of amazing
― barthes simpson, Monday, 24 September 2012 22:35 (eleven years ago) link
think I'm gonna have the ^^ reaction to all the songs that weren't on the ADC EPs, honestly.

After living with "The Thrill" for a couple weeks, I can't remember a note of it. :/
― The Reverend, Monday, 24 September 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link
really? i love that song
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link
the rhythm of that song is so cool and disorienting
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link
for me that's more true of 'kaleidoscope dream' if anything xp
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link
i definitely hadn't committed the new Water/Air preview songs to memory already, though, but that's a good thing, lets me hear the album as an album

― some dude, Monday, September 24, 2012
It's the album's sleeper imo.
― taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link
The title track connected with me the quickest of any of the new songs. It may just be that the Labi Siffre sample made my ears perk up immediately. I do like the song quite a bit though, even if it's not quite as good as "Use Me" or "Do You".
― The Reverend, Monday, 24 September 2012 23:21 (eleven years ago) link
"Do You" is sick, starting to get really excited about the prospect of hearing it on the radio
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link
yeah that song just routinely blows my mind
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:45 (eleven years ago) link
the "where's the fun" bassline is so crazy
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link
album is just full of killer basslines

yeah imma side with barthes on this one
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link
madness imo
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 23:53 (eleven years ago) link
i don't know, i don't really like the filter on miguel's voice, and something about the instrumentation makes the song seem more meandering than it is. think it really comes into its own as a song on the album version. also prefer the hook as a totally sung thing.
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:56 (eleven years ago) link
I prefer the album CITS too but it still plays like a B-side: the kind of track on which he tries something without quite hitting it.
― taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 24 September 2012 23:57 (eleven years ago) link
i like how evil and clausterphobic the ADC version sounds
― some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 23:58 (eleven years ago) link

haha i like it
― some dude, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 01:14 (eleven years ago) link
this is good, but it seems sort of...slight? some cool production and obviously there's nothing like his voice, but it's not the cinematic experience AIWIY was; there's no centerpiece like "teach me" that just leaves you reeling
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link
oh alright, "how many drinks" is pretty much a perfect little song
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:14 (eleven years ago) link
oh, the rapping
hold on, do i have a different copy?
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:18 (eleven years ago) link
hm, i'm missing "where's the fun"
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:19 (eleven years ago) link
yeah the double-tracking of his vocals on "how many drinks" is really nicely done, makes it sound like the song is floating away from you as you're listening to it; it's almost flirtatious
