i have absolutely no idea what to expect from this poll. except for Daydream Nation winning. and SST for the rest of the top 5.

But I have no idea what's going to be #22, and that's what keeps me hanging on...

not heard from seandalai so all your votes will count. Thanks for voting!

LAST DAY TO VOTE IN 80s ROCK POLL BY... (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 21 September 2012 07:13 (eleven years ago) link

I can't wait to see the results! No idea who even won!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 07:51 (eleven years ago) link

Hey, I'm on a superslow Internet connection here and can't get to Google Docs. Can I send the results on Saturday?

atari era stylings of (seandalai), Friday, 21 September 2012 07:58 (eleven years ago) link

Pillbox - I'll sort you out

atari era stylings of (seandalai), Friday, 21 September 2012 08:00 (eleven years ago) link

so do we have a rough idea of total numbers of ballots? Sounds like it was a roaring success!

I was thinking afterwards that while I voted for several Maiden tracks, I didn't rank them highly enough. And somehow Number of the Beast slipped off my albums list when I made the final cut, which is criminal.

The real crime, though, is that I didn't listen to You're Living All Over Me before voting.

It's actually kind of funny for me to think of DN as an "indie" album, considering what the term usually refers to these days. I know it's about as indie canon as it gets.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 10:50 (eleven years ago) link

it was too indie for me. i bought it the day it came out and took it back to get a refund the next day thinking "why did they have to go so indie?"

stirmonster, Friday, 21 September 2012 11:19 (eleven years ago) link

DN was the only SY album I voted for, being the limp-wristed indie fop that I am.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 21 September 2012 11:39 (eleven years ago) link

seandalai sure that's fine. Thanks!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

seandalai do you want me to save the google docs stuff to an .xls and send you that?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 12:01 (eleven years ago) link

sent it anyway and a .csv version too just incase you can work with it

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 12:04 (eleven years ago) link

King Diamond's "Abigail" album is pretty amazing. I'm sorry it dropped off my ballot.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 21 September 2012 12:52 (eleven years ago) link

^trying to shed his indie fop image

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 13:07 (eleven years ago) link

"trying" being the operative word! Maybe I should post about my great love for Napalm Death more.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 21 September 2012 13:26 (eleven years ago) link

we see through you!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

The best part of polls is always albums that I have never heard (of) getting in the list.

What obscure albums do you think/hope will make it?
Provide a Spotify link so we can all listen to it!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

oh you!

every couple of years I revisit daydream nation to see if I'm missing anything, guess it's that time again

10th time's the charm

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

It's a terrific album but just not the best Sonic Youth album imo

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

Do any current pitchforkian/nme bands come from the Sonic Youth lineage these days? Used to be every Glasgow band did.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

my favourite SY album is Dirty, which tells you that I am indeed a disgusting indie savage.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

Dirty rules. It's certainly their 'heaviest' and contains my fave song 'Chapel Hill'. Might be my 4th or 5th fave SY album.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

my ballots are both marvels of populism

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

favorite Sonic Youth song = "Diamond Sea"

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

xp

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

mine's probably Sugar Kane.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

xpost there was hardly any AC/DC to vote for so YOU'RE WRONG

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

can't stand daydream nation or goo, feel like those albums are actively trying to irritate me. went through a period where I listened to goo frequently, trying to figure out if they were on some whole other level that I wasn't grasping, but no I just hate that record. think dirty is pretty OK actually.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

Do any current pitchforkian/nme bands come from the Sonic Youth lineage these days?

This is what I was getting at upthread. I wonder how much under-25 Pitchfork readers even still recognize Sonic Youth as a great band.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe like Oneida fans?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

Even they're 15 years old.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

People who read pitchfork like Oneida?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

All the Oneida fans I know are old fans - stoner rockers.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

There's certainly no pitchforkian bands with the lineage of Big Black.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

this being ilx, i suspect its highly possible (if not likely) that Sister will place over DDN.

Broney, Pt. 1 (Pillbox), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno DDN usually tops these things even SY albums polls.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:39 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe SST will dominate then if it does

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:39 (eleven years ago) link

Actually ILM *IS* SST Central, isn't it?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

Daydream Nation kinda bores me! I get why people like it but it's def not my favorite SY.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

Actually ILM *IS* SST Central, isn't it?

? I never got this impression.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

There is definitely a big SST contingent. Admittedly not as large as Sonic Youth or New Order ones but it's there.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I'm assuming daydream nation, double nickels, and damaged will be top 10

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 21 September 2012 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe all the Sonic Youth tracks and albums will take all the top positions, lol.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

That thought scared everybody away
