Who is iamamiwhoami?

Yeah I saw it had really good reviews on RYM. It seems to have been getting some decent reviews in the music press too. I guess I was hoping it would take off on here a bit more, especially with The Knife/Fever Ray being so popular. Maybe I'll just keep bumping this thread until people take notice.

I listen to every new song of hers hoping it'll distinguish itself, and so far, to my ears, she hasn't done anything musically that'd put in the same league as "the usual suspects". But I always have time for a new iamamiwhoami song.

E.I.E.I. (Ówen P.), Monday, 17 September 2012 00:08 (eleven years ago) link

I really like the album.

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 17 September 2012 03:39 (eleven years ago) link

As I mentioned earlier in the thread I missed all the early hype for her when she was putting out those early singles, the first time I heard her was when I listened to Kin all the way through. I can imagine some people got bored of waiting for the album or just her whole campaign but for me it reminded me of hearing Silent Shout for the first time or Black Cherry, I just fell in love straight away.

Owen, Play is the song that really stood out for me. If you know it already then I can't really think of any others of hers that would change your mind.

After a second and third listen, i actually like the album even less than i did the first time. It's a shame because i like her aesthetic. There's nothing on there to match 't'.

Anyone seeing her in London this evening?

Yes! Looking forward to it a lot.

So good! I'll have to give the album another go. Live, she's fantastic.

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 22:03 (eleven years ago) link

Absolutely fantastic. After nearly three years of following her mostly erratic output, it was a massive buildup that could have flopped - but didn't. Unreal. I nearly, nearly, nearly shed a tear when she did Y. Incredible.

'kin' is a pretty incredible album, feel like it's massively slept-on. it's reminiscent of how austra was vv similar to the knife in ways that were pretty good but just made me want to listen to 'silent shout', except this is similar in ways that make me want to keep listening to 'kin'.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Thursday, 20 December 2012 22:31 (eleven years ago) link

Agree that this has been slept on massively, I've not seen it on one end of year critics list. I'll be voting for it in the ILM poll for sure, no album has come close to it this year.

For the people who still like to own actual CD's they've recently announced they're releasing Bounty in March.

I really like this album. For me, this and chairlift destroy the rest of the competition when it comes to catchy synthy Knifey styles this year

Playing in London again in May.

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Thursday, 20 December 2012 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

Couldn't agree more, it's excellent! Varied but still cohesive.
Grimes gets all the attention, and I wouldn't say this destroys her, but it is just as good.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 21 December 2012 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

this year's gazelle twin in terms of quality and unfortunate underappreciation imo.

I'm usually a big fan, but this is a bit too Sarah Brightman for me, I don't know...

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 04:30 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, the vocals ruin it a bit for me too. I feel only Liz Frazer can pull off that sort of thing. The song would have probably worked if it was sung a full octave lower.

daavid, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 05:18 (ten years ago) link

Late period Cocteaus got away with it because they had a better sense of tension and release and always shimmering sonics. I recall some missteps from them too (IIRC, on Love's Easy Tears) when they got into a lock groove of trilling.

Hopefully the next one from Joanna & co. will be more grounded.

Another five singles have been released since the last post on here and an album is out in three weeks. Kin is still one of my favourite albums of the decade so far but I've been strangely unmoved by any of the songs I've heard from this new one and haven't even listened to all of them. Will definitely give the album a listen but I'm just not expecting to be blown away like I was with Kin or Bounty.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 14:28 (nine years ago) link

I've heard all the singles on Spotify and I like all of them. Didn't realize they were leading up to an album so soon (I'm accustomed to her taking a couple years to get to that stage).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 02:54 (nine years ago) link

"Fountain" and "Hunting for Pearls" have probably been two of my most played tracks this year, awesomely excited for this next record

nxd, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 08:41 (nine years ago) link

Maybe I just need to spend some more time with the songs that are out there. I'm actually more behind than I realised. Seven of the ten tracks on the album have already been released and I may have only heard three of them.

The album is out Nov 10th and is called BLUE.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 20 October 2016 00:41 (seven years ago) link

I'd put Kin just behind Kaleidoscope Dream. It would definitely make my top 10 of the decade. It's a shame I couldn't get into the follow up in the same way. It just kind of passed me by.

Love the song and the video! My boyfriend also asked if it was Ellie Goulding while I was watching it. I can hear some inflections in her voice that sound similar.
