seeing him DJ in a few weeks, very excited

feel like this album is very prime Autumn vibes

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

He's a good live DJ.

Tim F, Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

oncoming autumn vibes but while the light and heat of summer are still in the air, is what i'm thinking

lex pretend, Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

also the remix is excellent obv, and i say this as someone who found the chairlift original super boring

lex pretend, Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

i was going to see john talabot until the xx album came out and was boring (they are touring together)

teledyldonix, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:13 (eleven years ago) link

anyone know if there's an unofficial comp of his remixes/pre-fin stuff anywhere

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:19 (eleven years ago) link

shit club music

funny, the criticism i would've made is that it's a hair's breadth from not being club music at all, it's coffee-table house

hot slag (lukas), Sunday, 16 September 2012 00:48 (eleven years ago) link

i think that's why i like it

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 September 2012 00:54 (eleven years ago) link

At this point criticising stuff as coffee-table house seems a bit pointless, all of us have coffee-table house skeletons in our closet.

Tim F, Sunday, 16 September 2012 04:13 (eleven years ago) link

I love his stuff! I'm getting older, you know.

hot slag (lukas), Sunday, 16 September 2012 05:50 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I prefer "shit club music" to "coffee table house" as a criticism anyway!

My question about how much people listened to this wasn't just a rhetorical attack btw, I just genuinely have got no real further joy from it, beyond the first week. I am settling on the idea that I need physicality to house music or it doesn't really work for me, a lot of my buzz with it is connected to exercise lately!

But I feel like I hear better stuff in this vein on Beats In Space all the time.

Good dj tho I agree.

seeing him tonight as support for xx in a carling academy style venue. has anyone seen him play this kind of show? what to expect? also, how do you pronounce his name? "talabow"?

caek, Friday, 30 November 2012 13:52 (eleven years ago) link

His live set was nice, basically the album with a different track list. Him and Pional standing behind keyboards, triggering stuff and singing. I'm probably underrating it but I'm comparing it to seeing him dj, which was the best set I've heard all year.

hot slag (lukas), Friday, 30 November 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

er, "the album with a different track order"

hot slag (lukas), Friday, 30 November 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that was basically it. sounded great, but struggled a bit with the crowd tbh via insane suburban venue (~5k capacity, and licensing meant his set began at 8pm)

Great news! John Talabot’s excellent Hivern Discs label starts a new “white-label” series, called “Blanc”. The new series will consist of one-sided 12” and will be limited to 100 copies available from the label’s website.

Each release will feature an uncredited cut from Hivern Discs’ current stable of artists, which includes Teengirl Fantasy, Pional, Aster, New Jackson, and John Talabot himself.

So...

This DJ Kicks mix is urgent and key. It's dark and moody, intense and 'humid' atmospherics, but still with his sensibilities for big hooks and melodies. Apparently the selection is "not for clubs," but I would happily dance to this all night. It is absolutely my shit right now.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 17:54 (ten years ago) link

Mines a similar vein as Immer 2 imo, especially that selection towards the end with SCSI-9, Jesse Somfay and the Sten Remix, but does so much more dynamically and vividly. 27 tracks as well, it's super-detailed in a good way.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 18:02 (ten years ago) link

this is awful in my view, apart from "old song" and one or two other tracks. just really clunky portentous trance.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 14:17 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I wasn't feeling it either, it just dragged mostly.

I think it's pretty great, though maybe too long? Miko otm about it being dark and moody, qualities which I know a lot of people didn't like about Fin

rob, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 16:57 (ten years ago) link

yeah it's more like balearic for post-ww4 radioactive nuclear fallout parched wasteland ibiza

thought it was a pretty awesome thing myself, albeit admittedly partly in the disquieting fearful sense of awe

did put it on for a night bus journey the other week and tbh it was just too intense man i was freaking out

r|t|c, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:17 (ten years ago) link

Yeah that feels right, esp. "Escape From Detroit".

Interesting to see who's coming down where on this one.

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link

i'd guess its eyerolls are probably much like when a daaaaark outlier spin-off of a beloved genre of mine gets hipster kisses out of the blue

to that i would respond yeah lol sozzles but talabot does weave a deeply rich and skilful tapestry here

r|t|c, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 20:31 (ten years ago) link

It's weird, it just falls totally flat for me, I feel like that Dixon and Ame Boiler Room kind of took this sound as far as I'd want it to go.

Am on a long few weeks of p much only listening to Tim Hecker, Deaf Centre, and other stuff along those lines, cos they help me to do some writing work I've got on the go, so it may be bad timing for me.

I was only so-so about the album in the end too tho.

There is one track near the end I liked as well as Old Song, had heard it before, it's the DJ Samo one.

Old Song is all-time tho.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 22:16 (ten years ago) link

I particularly like the way he mixes the Young Marco remix of "Heterotopia" into "We Doubt (You Can Make It)". It's the kind of two-totally-different-songs-become-one trick that Villalobos used to pull off on the rare occasions when he felt like being gregarious.

The Dixon and Ame Boiler Room is a good reference point for this, but it has some of the "let's build a soundworld" portentous swirliness that I associate with the Wighnomy Bros' Metawuffmischfelge and Mayer's Immer 2.

Tim F, Thursday, 28 November 2013 00:13 (ten years ago) link

Your night bus comment would appear to support this.
