is it just me or have they been really daring lately?

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 14 September 2012 10:44 (eleven years ago) link

I think a lot of this is angry writers who didn't make the move to Chicago and figure their days are numbered, so why not go for it?

Three Word Username, Friday, 14 September 2012 10:46 (eleven years ago) link

I think the angry Onion writers who did not make the move are no longer writers. If anything, maybe it's an attention getting move from the writers who did make the move, as well as the new writers the old, ex writers prematurely denigrated.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 September 2012 14:03 (eleven years ago) link

I kinda feel like its a cyclical thing with The Onion, they get kinda stale for awhile and then every so often they'll unleash a string of stuff that pushes the limits.

that sounds right

1 group that hasn't moved yet: video. that move is going to happen, though. enjoy sex house while you've got it.

It ended yesterday, so perfect timing!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 September 2012 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

Although the video dept. was still based in NY at the time, Sex House was shot in Chicago with Chicago actors. So you neeeever knoooooow.

ohhh

hot slag (lukas), Friday, 14 September 2012 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

where had they been located?

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 14 September 2012 23:26 (eleven years ago) link

When the sex house writers were on reddit they were saying they'd been onion writers for a while who didn't want to move to Chicago and wouldn't be doing so. I think normal onion video (the spoof news and sport stuff) has all moved to chicago, but the 'onion digital studios' stuff like sex house is funded by youtube and will be staying in nyc?

Surprised me that they're not still in Madison, actually!

Doctor Casino, Monday, 17 September 2012 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

The Onion is in the midst of the biggest upheaval in the newspaper's 24-year history.

Holy shit, I feel really old. 24 years!?

yeah`, onion for me has always been a madison thing. feel good about them moving back to the midwest.

If it helps, The Onion was largely a local phenomenon for the first half of its existence. It wasn't until the implementation of the website and mass distribution around the turn of the century that the world-at-large knew anything about it.

think the "creative economy," to use a loathsome but I hope descriptive term, is much stronger if everybody isn't operating out of the same town

I got into it through my brother in the mid-to-late-90s, but he had been in college (in Georgia) and presumably it had a decent college-town alt-weekly type circulation. I remember he had the one with "Christ Returns to NBA," which is dated 1996. So it was a "thing" before the internet although obviously it's way way bigger now.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 17 September 2012 13:13 (eleven years ago) link

I first discovered it when I started my freshman year at Illinois in 1994, with one of my all-time favorite covers with the Thompson Changes Title from 'Governor' to 'Sexecutioner' with an awesome cust and paste job showing Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson in full S&M gear.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 17 September 2012 13:31 (eleven years ago) link

96 was around when their website started - I'm pretty sure I remember that headline (though I may have been backtracking)

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 17 September 2012 13:34 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, when they started the website they put up a lot of their old covers. I'm 99% sure that was from the fall of '94 because I remember my roommate's mom getting offended upon seeing it up in our floor lounge.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 17 September 2012 13:36 (eleven years ago) link

Ah no sorry, I meant "Christ Returns to NBA" - if I saw the other at any point then blessed forgetfulness has robbed me of it.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 17 September 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link

Oh gotcha, that was a great one too.

i am always a little amazed by how many fucking UWisc campuses there are --- like it's weird how it even affects how ppl talk about it, if you told someone that you went to the university of wisconsin you'd just get a blank look.

i want to say that california has a bigger system (they must, they have to), but i think for real that sconny is in the running

catbus otm (gbx), Monday, 17 September 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

Wisconsin has fewer than Univeristy of California, but California also has the separate California State University system.

how's life, Monday, 17 September 2012 17:36 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry, I meant Wisconsin has more than UC.

how's life, Monday, 17 September 2012 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

does WI have only one system? MN has the U branches but also the whole MNSCU system

goole, Monday, 17 September 2012 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

The University of Wisconsin system merged with the Wisconsin State University system in 1971 to create today's University of Wisconsin System. The 1971 merger law approved by the State Senate combined the two higher education systems in Wisconsin under a single Board of Regents, creating a system with 13 universities, 14 (now 13) freshman-sophomore centers (now colleges), and a statewide extension with offices in all 72 counties.
