The Onion has been pretty funny as of late, just not with that one.

I like the write-up in the Voice link that calls out that Xiu Xiu song, nails why that song always rubbed me the wrong way. Like, misdirected vitriol there, on some level.

never heard that one. calling Empire State of Mind a 9/11 response song is a pretty big stretch though.

"Empire State of Mind" was originally written by Brooklyn natives Angela Hunte and Jane't "Jnay" Sewell-Ulepic who were feeling homesick while on an overseas trip in February 2009. The following month they sent the song in for consideration at Roc Nation, although it received negative reviews. Initially discouraged, the duo sent the song to Jay-Z after a suggestion by an associate of EMI Music Publishing (EMI), and after an incident which they described as an omen.

After hearing the song, Jay-Z immediately recorded it, changing all of the verses but keeping the hook.

lol

"immediately" - final master is recorded in Voice Memos on Hov's iPhone. Memphis Bleek is humming the string parts.

This thread was therapeutic after reading my friends' Facebook posts from yesterday this morning. It was all I could do to not troll every single one of them.

If some artist did that as a critique of consumerism or whatever you'd think he was the biggest hack on the planet.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz are preparing to kick off the season in patriotic style.

Beckham and Cruz plan to wear special 9/11 cleats before and during Sunday's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. They each have a pair for pregame and during the game that serve as a tribute to the 15-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy.

The cleats by Kickasso like Picasso will include American flag versions for the game. Beckham will wear a special 9/11 cleat during warmups, while Cruz will have a fire truck cleat with his late father's engine number on them. Cruz's dad was a fireman in Paterson, New Jersey.

"It's a special cleat for a couple reasons. I mean opening day is on 9/11," said Troy Cole, Kickasso's owner. "And Odell wanted to pay tribute to the heroes of 9/11, and not toward the tragedy aspect, with the falling building and the heroes all around kind of helping and saving people. That is why it's kind of special and going to be pretty cool."

I only know about this through a neighborhood facebook group, but apparently there's a house whose owner does all kinds of strange object arrangements on the lawn as art, and this was the owner's 9/11 tribute (bad quality photo cribbed from group). Really need to go see it.
