how exactly could the board that voted her song the #1 track of last year be in denial of her thingitude
― some dude, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 00:58 (eleven years ago) link
I mean. I'm not going to rave about the flawlessness of her videos or how much I love her because that's not really what we do here? I dont have much of substance to say. The mixtape is a mixed bag, Esta Noche is wonderful, the EP is perfect Crystal Waters 90s house rap vogue realness. I hope the album is more like the EP than the mixtape although her verse on that MIA remix shows she can rap on a more traditional beat pretty well too.
She beefs too much, a lot of the goons won't like her on the grounds of her not being real enough especially deej and I have no desire to start another debate a la le1f about whether this is actually good or only popular with hipsters or fashion kids or whatever. I will say that Tumblr loves it and so does the queer scene in Montreal and Toronto.
Anyway, there is a bunch of talking about how she is a thing. But like. Some people like her and some don't and for whatever reason any statement of thinking she's awesome is likely to prompt an unnecessary shitshow of a debate and I'd rather just listen to 1991 in my room or on a club and not argue about what she means and if she's a rapper etc. ad nauseum.

No ones pretending tho. I think we all just know where we stand and are unlikely to change. Like The Weeknd or whoever else.

the idea that this board doesn't pay enough attention to az banks is bizarre though
as is the idea of people going completely nuts for her particularly

she does look great in it though, great song

My best friend directed that video. He said she wanted a 90s vibe a la "Vogue" but he needed more reference material. So I sent him links to New Order "Round and Round", Cathy Dennis "Touch Me", Stevie V "Dirty Cash", D-Mob etc.

My girlfriend's a big fan and played me some of the Fantasea mixtape yesterday...woahhhh, one of the tracks samples Claudja Barry's 'Love for the Sake of Love'. Which was rad as it meant I got to play her DJ Harvey's Sarcastic Disco mix in return.

fantasea is a mixed bag. there's nothing particularly exciting on there that you haven't heard from banks before and there's nothing as polished as the 1991 EP.
with the exception of esta noche, the aforementioned montell jordan flip, which i love:

and maybe 'fierce' but probably not.

even if she does like azealia she's still married to david cameron which fairly nullifies any suggestion that she has good taste in anything.

crikey. but the mixtape was free so i dont quite get his beef there. although yeah hes every right to be pissed at the way the single has been handled. mind you.. 25 grand he's been offered. 25 grand, name on the sleeve and the artwork and the itunes etc, plus all that exposure. shit i might take that.

that's the thing, making an official single off a mixtape track kind of defeats the point of a mixtape (at least in the sense of a rap mixtape where the beats/samples aren't cleared).

A lotta ONTD xposts up in this piece lately...
― Cousin Slappy, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 22:03 (eleven years ago) link
i was initially under the impression it was anything but this... like every almost (every?) track was appropriated from within the fairly close rbma + nyc bass scenes - like nick hook / lunice / machine drum / munchi have all hung out with each other - i'd assumed one of them was doing most of the arranging on the album and had requested use of the tracks from the others, i guess not?
...what's ONTD
