I almost never use lastfm, it's blocked at work. Nothing personal.

Maybe Glenn can run some stats comparing, but I'd assume the Decibel list was closest to ours.

rolling autogoon seems to nay say the idea, and given a bit of thought, I don't think it would be worth it this late, after so many lists, and people are warn out on 2008 lists etc.. Next year I will though.

Just check out that ABN record and the Guilty Simpson and you're set, really.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 26 January 2009 16:52 (5 years ago) Permalink

well they still said they would contribute a list, and im sure those who dont post on that thread would contribute too. That's what happened with this poll, a lot of the contributors werent rolling metal thread posters. Some were lurkers who i dont know on ilx. So this kind of email poll does get a decent turn out. 30 was more than I expected. A rap poll would get a lot more i reckon.
You should give it a go, it will help get people discovering stuff they wouldnt always know about. As far as I can see only a few of the usual suspects will get in the ilx poll if P&J is anything to go by.
I'd say have a go doing a rap poll!

Ok, fuck it. Tomorrow I'll start it up.

Metal Edge has 29 things that are in our top 100. Decibel and Terrorizer each have 25. Kerrang has 5.

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 26 January 2009 18:36 (5 years ago) Permalink

Interesting. Metal Edge has really changed since Phil took over as editor then. (As I said before Metal Edge isn't available in Smiths anymore despite it always having been until a year or so ago).

Not surprised at the lack of Kerrang stuff.

What about the top 50? How many are in that?

the worst poster on ilx fwiw (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 January 2009 19:55 (5 years ago) Permalink

Metal Edge has 29 things in common because nearly all the writers for that magazine post here.

Shmutchered at Shmirth (J3ff T.), Monday, 26 January 2009 20:09 (5 years ago) Permalink

Well, Phil didn't vote as he said he forgot, I know you write for it but who else? (and don't you all write for Decibel too?) I only know of one Terrorizer writer here (who voted). Does Stevie Chick still write for Kerrang? (not that he voted as far as i'm aware)

Metal Edge, Decibel and Terrorizer each have a 21-allbum overlap with this poll's top 50. Terrorizer overlaps 15 with this poll's top 25, the other two 14.

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 26 January 2009 20:59 (5 years ago) Permalink

thanks for that Glenn!! Very interesting.
Going to give this Cynic album a spin, it's on spotify. Quite handy! If you're on spotify then check out the albums from our poll that are on it(not licensed to usa/canada yet im afraid)

the worst poster on ilx fwiw (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 January 2009 21:21 (5 years ago) Permalink

Which ones are on it (if you already know it saves me doing 100 searches)?

onimo, Monday, 26 January 2009 21:34 (5 years ago) Permalink

I haven't looked. I just remembered Ned, I think it was saying, Cynic were a bit proggy. I'm surprised tho, no death metal at all. It's definitely prog metal with clean singing. Not what I expected at all.

Cheers, just found it, I'll give that a quick listen then see what else I can find. I did search for the other day and found a few of the artists but it was mostly older material.

It's definitely prog metal with clean singing.

There's some growly and distorted stuff on there as well (on the second track). Allmusic review mentions falsetto as well - may as well get the full set...

onimo, Monday, 26 January 2009 21:45 (5 years ago) Permalink

I can see this growing on me. Not sure about the futuristic vocal distortions though (when I say futuristic I mean what counted as futuristic in 1982).

If there are other Terrorizer writers here they are very much on the downlow. I wouldn't say my tastes in metal are that typical of the other writers and/or what gets covered in the mag, anyhoo

ILXors who write for Metal Edge: me, Ned Raggett, Adrien Begrand, Jeff T., Jonathan Lundeen, Matt Cibula, and Scott Seward did when I first took over but then he kinda faded out. I wish he'd come back.

No problem Onimo.
I found the Gojira very boring.

does anyone else find it interesting that "metalheads" be enjoying Portishead so?

Keep The Dogs Away (Ioannis), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 09:43 (5 years ago) Permalink

It's not surprising. Esp as Geoff runs a doom/psych label.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 09:44 (5 years ago) Permalink

I had to draw the line at nominating them here though. Marnie Stern getting votes annoyed the troo metal nerds enough as it was.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 09:45 (5 years ago) Permalink

third is particularly heavy on the ominous. makes sense to me...

m the g, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 09:47 (5 years ago) Permalink

Also lots "metalheads" listen to other stuff than metal.

Krallice sound like Glenn Branca at times!

Sundar, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 21:54 (5 years ago) Permalink

you should check out the ocrilim album, if you haven't already. branca-ness abounds.

m the g, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 22:57 (5 years ago) Permalink

i guess i should check out some branca then, b/c i like the ocrilim.

mte, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 00:12 (5 years ago) Permalink

You should.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 06:30 (5 years ago) Permalink

will do. any suggestions where to start?

mte, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 14:25 (5 years ago) Permalink

autogoons called off the rap poll.

ah well.

ok, so I listened to a couple of records and thought "Hmm.. this is OK. I'll guess I will make it to the end of my week of metal and maybe check out rolling metal once every couple of months instead of never". But now I am listening to the Harvey Milk and really fucking enjoying it. So now I am wondering if the other records were just canon fodder to ease me in, if this is a 1 off or if I may actually really start liking this genre i'd written off forever?

So, what should I listen to next if like the Harvey Milk and Genghis Tron, not so much the Gojira and... umm, I still have no idea what I think of the more droney stuff. Nice in idea but actually a bit boring? Nice background music?

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 14:47 (5 years ago) Permalink

i don't like the Gojira disc either; too much breast-beating hardcore punk in the vocals.

the ones i've liked thus far, to one degree or another: the
Nachtmystium, Esoteric, Amon Amarth and Earth discs.

i didn't like the Torche very much (too remminicent of Helmet for my tastes bone-weary tastes), but i have the feeling you'd probably dig it. also, i found the Harvey Milk disc kinda annoying. go figure. next.

Keep The Dogs Away (Ioannis), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 15:05 (5 years ago) Permalink

Cheers. I downloaded it the same time I got the others, and I'm sure i'll listen to it before the week ends.

One thing I'm going to do - I'm not going to listen to records with tacky, horrible, 'shock' covers. It's not shocking, it's just a bit lame and just feels me with no desire at all to listen to their records. Is this common with any metal fans and will I be missing out on anything so amazing that I should go against such a statement?

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 15:15 (5 years ago) Permalink

maybe too obvious, but if you liked the harvey milk, check out some melvins records. I really like the recent-ish (a) senile animal. two drummers, good times.

and check out the back catalogs! I like special wishes/dead mountain mouth better than the latest harvey milk/genghis tron records.
