seandalai is it just the 2 ballots so far?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 30 August 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

btw is there any consensus on best swans albums?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 30 August 2012 20:17 (eleven years ago) link

Children of God

aspiring barkitect (silverfish), Thursday, 30 August 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

well,yes. but after that?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 30 August 2012 20:28 (eleven years ago) link

Of the ones above, Cop. Although it's my favourite.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Thursday, 30 August 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

not much consensus after that I think, some people prefer the more abrasive early stuff and some people prefer the later stuff

I've only heard about half their albums anyway, so somebody else should probably answer this. I really like the live album Swans are Dead.

xp

a good few bands have lots of albums nominated so it will be interesting to see if the general consensus albums do best in the poll or if an 'ilm favourite' will beat it.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 30 August 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

Out of interest how do others whittle down their shortlists?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 30 August 2012 21:33 (eleven years ago) link

i start by picking out and setting aside the albums i love best of all, those that i know will be somewhere in my top 10-20. that sets a good bar of comparison for other stuff.

then i run through the rest of the list a few times and pick off outliers: albums with weak spots, those that i "respect" more than love or loved once but no longer get as much out of. the final trimming is always the worst part, and i'm often driven to more-or-less arbitrary cuts.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 30 August 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

Sometimes you just need to go "aww fuck it" and just hit submit otherwise you would still be procrastinating 3 weeks later.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 30 August 2012 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

Bad Brains - Bad Brains
Bad Brains - S/T

are these different?

billstevejim, Thursday, 30 August 2012 23:13 (eleven years ago) link

no its a mistake. Seandalai can you fix that please?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 30 August 2012 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

Time to campaign for albums. An album I hope lots of you check out is this one:
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus http://open.spotify.com/album/3BHQVxQ9W2uqQM4zMf9CGo

One of the first doom metal albums and arguably still the best.

Sadly Trouble - Psalm 9 is not on spotify
so for some US doom metal try:
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late http://open.spotify.com/album/6CyKigkGRtW3xTDZczqlRC

100% data-free analysis: no real consensus after COG, but Filth and Cop are considered their best noise records, which is to say simultaneously fetishized and dismissed (critics respect them, but never seem to like them much). the first EP, when it's considered at all, is either written off as embryonic or lumped in with Filth (sorta like Young God/Cop). Holy Money and Greed are IMO underrated, but are often considered too slick and/or unintentionally humorous. also, the music from this period is generally thought to be better represented live, and Public Castration is the document of choice in this regard. so, for the 80s, "consensus" of top Swans picks - based solely on my subjective guesswork - looks like: COG >Public Castration>Filth/Cop as 1-2-3/4 (Filth on occasion lauded for "rocking", and Cop for brutality).

Hellhouse, Thursday, 30 August 2012 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

"consensus", you know, in my house.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 30 August 2012 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

except that I genuinely love Filth/Cop for hitting that tiny intersection of metal, industrial and blues.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 30 August 2012 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

y playlist for the albums? We already have one for tracks.

where where?!?

billstevejim, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

i need a new mouse, that copied horribly... spotify playlist??

billstevejim, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

just posted mine

Moodles, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

I already said that we already had a volunteer to do the tracks playlist (hellhouse) not a playlist.
We still need a volunteer to do an albums playlist.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:11 (eleven years ago) link

my mistake, i thought you said the playlist was finished

billstevejim, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link

Nope. He said he would do it at the weekend and then post it here.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:13 (eleven years ago) link

It's just myself and viceroy running this now unfortunately so we're a bit pushed and need help with things like spotify and keeping this thread bumped. (seandalai is tabulating etc obv)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:19 (eleven years ago) link

will try to get track playlist up in the next few days.

Hellhouse, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:21 (eleven years ago) link

I've started working on a ballot...

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Friday, 31 August 2012 00:22 (eleven years ago) link

Perhaps some of you, who were actually listening to this music at the time, could tell me if people in general listened to a mix of stuff like in the nominations here or if they mainly stuck to their 'scenes'?
I cant imagine anyone listening to noise-rock/pigfuck and hair metal for example (apart from chuck obviously)

I think I can guess the albums in the nominations that didn't get represented in P&J.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:29 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, not knowing your age, I'd kind of been assuming that maybe you were listening to this stuff at the time.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 31 August 2012 00:47 (eleven years ago) link

I'm 39 but no, I was totally unaware of it. And I hated hair metal. After the no U2 stuff on the noms thread - guess who i listened to back then?

I'm one of those walking clichés of whom Nirvana completely changed my life.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:55 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, Hysteria was one of the biggest albums of 1987, right? Is it that inconceivable that someone who listened to the Butthole Surfers might have also picked up a copy? Could xhuxk have been alone? (I don't know if he likes the BS btw.)

I remember the MuchMusic Power Hour played Poison alongside stuff like Venom alongside Iron Maiden alongside Celtic Frost alongside Suicidal Tendencies and DRI and Jane's Addiction etc. So I was at least aware of all of this stuff at 9-10. (The more extreme stuff freaked me out at that age though.)

xpost wow

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 31 August 2012 00:57 (eleven years ago) link

oh I had a copy of hysteria myself. That album , Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses crossed over in my school (and everywhere else I guess)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:58 (eleven years ago) link

I listened to pigfuck and hair metal back then. Still do.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:01 (eleven years ago) link

i feel kinda uninformed not knowing a lot of these albums/songs but i have a feeling i'm gonna discover some amazing things in those 2 lists

billstevejim, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:09 (eleven years ago) link

That is the whole point of the polls I run!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:16 (eleven years ago) link

3 times I removed that N.W.A. album and it keeps reappearing. Seandalai could you remove it from the list please?
Could a kindly mod remove it from the list at the top as well please?

If any jokers vote for it , it will not be counted.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

can we make a last min addition? i so want to vote for killing joke's fire dances in the albums poll but much to my dismay i now realize nobody nominated that one!

there are also a few things i nommed and don't see in the albums list. ac temple, big flame, hoodoo gurus, del fuegos, Go4... i assume AG vetoed those out?

cock chirea, Friday, 31 August 2012 02:06 (eleven years ago) link

i didn't veto them. You will need to ask seandalai if he can add them, but theres a good chance you would be the only voter.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 02:19 (eleven years ago) link

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, August 30, 2012 5:29 PM (1 hour ago)

i was a fan of harsh, brutal noise rock, but i also loved appetite for destruction. that was about as far as i'd go towards hair metal, though. i hadn't liked it much when i was younger, and the indie/alt ethos of the mid-to-late 80s tended to be dismissive of anything too obviously "commercial". then as now, my impression was that most young people stuck to a fairly narrow bandwidth of favorite things.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Friday, 31 August 2012 02:46 (eleven years ago) link

i guess that's sort of misleading. i can't really speak to "people in general", but the dominant indie/alt sensibility tended to valorize "open ears". most of my friends had pretty broad taste in this sort of music: pixies to metallica, fishbone to flipper, big black to the beastie boys.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Friday, 31 August 2012 02:54 (eleven years ago) link

at the same time, i knew a fair number of dedicated punks and metalheads who seldom listened to anything out of their chosen rut.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Friday, 31 August 2012 02:55 (eleven years ago) link

this pretty much covers my teenage years. i'll be voting for the stuff i liked then plus a small handful of later discoveries.

the stuff i liked then is aces tho

I shall now post the full nominations list here for those who are at work and cant access google documents but want tomake up their shortlist. (and if it annoys some dude its a bonus! :-) )

not at all, of course it should be posted here! once, of course.

some dude, Friday, 31 August 2012 10:59 (eleven years ago) link

The Pretenders' first album should be in there, too, not just the second, right?

some dude, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:20 (eleven years ago) link

no.

I just read the 90s electronic music poll noms thread and my head hurts. What is it with ilm and nomination thread arguments. Nominations threads are a necessity but the ensuing clusterfucks aren't!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

at the same time, i knew a fair number of dedicated punks and metalheads who seldom listened to anything out of their chosen rut.

That's how it's always been told to me. I even know metal fans who sold all their 70s metal when they got into punk.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 31 August 2012 13:57 (eleven years ago) link

listen it's not a big deal if you don't include the 1st Pretenders, it's your poll, but you told me you decided to include it 4 days ago: Nominations for an 80s Albums That Rock Poll(inc indie/Alt,punk,metal,heavy/glam etc) CLOSES SUNDAY NIGHT 11:59 p.m. UK

some dude, Friday, 31 August 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

i mean it didn't even place in the ILM poll of all '80s albums, just kinda sucks for it to get arbitrarily tossed out of a poll where it might actually place (while the lesser follow-up, which isn't any harder rocking, is included for some reason)

some dude, Friday, 31 August 2012 14:08 (eleven years ago) link

They listened to Metal, before Punk, because that's all that was available if they didn't like Prog/Pop/owt-else.

Once punk happened, they either found in it what was missing, or they didn't like it and stuck to metal.

Mark G, Friday, 31 August 2012 14:09 (eleven years ago) link

I def meant the two SY albums when I said SST was going to fill out the top 5, but it was an unfair jibe since one of the SST Sonic Youth records made my top 3...

I def predict Swans are going to do very well, which is what happens when you release the unofficially unanimous album of the present year. I'm thinking Children of God will be top 10

I have no idea how the top 10 is gonna shape up.

It would be stirmonsters worst nightmare if Def Leppard won.

yes, it would, although i do own this which i bought in my brief nwobhm phase and which i am delighted to see goes for crazy money.
