yeah they're good here, tho i'll admit to being completely flummoxed by them so far (but that's fine).

Fantastic effort, Ismael. Really enjoying this.

Leonard Pine, Monday, 27 August 2012 17:18 (9 months ago) Permalink

for a while this was my favourite from '50 words for snow', it's not quite now but it does encapsulate everything that's good about that album.

second only to popcorn (or something), Monday, 27 August 2012 17:22 (9 months ago) Permalink

Voted for "Lake Tahoe". Glad to see it here!

Loo Reading (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 27 August 2012 17:34 (9 months ago) Permalink

I hardly know what to think about 50, I can hardly get a handle on it now. It's like it's drifting away from me, or I'm viewing it through frosted glass. Only Wild Man, Wheeler St and the title track carry any sort of weight for me beyond the odd snippet.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 17:40 (9 months ago) Permalink

It'll make sense again in three months.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 27 August 2012 17:40 (9 months ago) Permalink

you've skilfully missed the best track on it there ik.

I voted for Wheeler Street. I don't think I'm giving too much away if I say it was just me.

Lionheart (1978)
in concert!

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 17:58 (9 months ago) Permalink

Neither of the above are the 50 Words track I voted for, but I'm glad to see them. Sort of surprised "Witch" is so low, I think of that as a pretty iconic track. (But that could be because I first heard it on a mixtape my college girlfriend made me when we were first going out.)

i expected witch to finish much higher, too

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Monday, 27 August 2012 18:24 (9 months ago) Permalink

I was amazed Oh England fell so low; it's irresistible. Not that I was one of the five, but why's it so unpopular?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:25 (9 months ago) Permalink

i expected witch to finish much higher, too

I had a hard time voting for many pieces of "The Ninth Wave." They work so well together as a whole that saying one part or another was superior ended up meaning I only voted for one.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:27 (9 months ago) Permalink

Gah, I didn't vote. Still, as I said, I would've been pretty much canon, so I'll use these results for some deep-digging hints.

emil.y, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:36 (9 months ago) Permalink

Yeah, I could've pushed for votes a bit more, but I felt the way it was working out heads-only was producing quite an interesting list. I hope you find some things to your liking.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:50 (9 months ago) Permalink

Xpost - Oh England was the last track to drop off my list and if I did a top 20 next week it would probably be top 5. It's beautiful and unique, but the problem is that so is most of Kate Bush's oeuvre. Something has got to give, I am afraid.

Guilty_Boksen, Monday, 27 August 2012 18:51 (9 months ago) Permalink

i voted for one representative track from "9th Wave" and "Sky of Honey" cos i cdn't separate them properly, sensibly. for each i chose my (probably) fave bit. simple question of all the other songs i needed to vote for, as is not voting "My Lionheart". there are almost no Kate tracks i dislike, but man 20 votes is not a lot.

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Monday, 27 August 2012 18:56 (9 months ago) Permalink

there's a real cottage industry in fan-made kate youtube videos, i actually quite like a lot of them. there's an animated one for 'among angels' that's just devastating tbh.

second only to popcorn (or something), Monday, 27 August 2012 19:01 (9 months ago) Permalink

I hadn't realised 'til just now, they're great. I posted one on the voting thread for Constellation of the Heart, but I thought that was just a one-off.

Huh. Love Aerial, but not a particular fan of KotM. It would be my 8th or 9th favorite track, probably.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 27 August 2012 19:30 (9 months ago) Permalink

I disliked it at the time as a single but it made my ballot.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 August 2012 19:34 (9 months ago) Permalink

This and Wild Man seemed like disappointing singles at their respective times, but what else could they have issued? It's not like Lake Tahoe or A Coral Room would have been burning up the airwaves.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 19:43 (9 months ago) Permalink

I like how it has a bit of the Fairlight feel to it in the intro. And was it Marcello who wrote that great piece about how you've been waiting for Kate to come back for a dozen years and then when she finally does, you get this mysterious intro followed by a totally SKANK reggae guitar? I can't remember.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 27 August 2012 19:43 (9 months ago) Permalink

What is this Fairlight thing you're all going on about?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 19:47 (9 months ago) Permalink

Yeah - just sounds like a cheap synth! Production on "Wild Man" is so good. Disarmingly mellow until that bonkers chorus.

Loo Reading (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 27 August 2012 19:49 (9 months ago) Permalink

Very surprised KotM made it! o_O

Loving all your your work IK, and am glad to be a part of the whole thing <3

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 August 2012 20:01 (9 months ago) Permalink

"programming the fairlight" is, for me, shorthand for kate bush doing whatever magical stuff she did all through the 80s. since I have no real idea what it entails.

*5. Wuthering Heights
617 points, twenty-two votes, three no.1s
The Kick Inside (1978) (two votes for The Whole Story (1986))
debut performance*

In addition to the point above that it being #5 is a bit of a LOL, I did want to return to a point I made in the noms thread. While I respect folks who prefer the first version they heard of this, and myself generally can't be bothered with remakes no matter how "technically" or even "musically" superior they are, in the case of the 1986 New Vocal version, it's not even close.

On the original, the way she phrases "It's me/Cathy, I've come home" leaves her running out of breath by the time she reaches "I'm" (it's already an odd phrasing, putting the "I'm" in the line with "home" instead of "So cold" but the clipped way she sings it makes it even odder). But on the remake, her superior breath control allows her to extend the "ee's" of "me" and "Cathy" so that she can go straight into a hugely powerful "Co-o-o-ollld." That in turn allows her to use the line "Let me in-a-your window" as the climax of the chorus instead of the kind of tag it serves as in the original.

Not altogether unlike Sinatra ca. the Capitol recordings, the skill of her singing by this time was at its absolute peak. And on this, it allows her to fundamentally transform not just the feel of one of her best-known songs into something even more powerful and natural -- but the melody itself. It's amazing.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 3 September 2012 13:06 (9 months ago) Permalink

Yeah, but a) the original sounds like a crazy person singing alien music whereas in '86 it just sounds like Kate Bush, b) there's a MIDIVerb or something on the '86 version that makes it sound as if she's singing in a bathroom instead of on a wild and windy moor, c) one needs to hear how untamed her voice was on those early singles to really appreciate the subsequent "soft focus" approach to her singing on "Lionheart" moving into the high drama of "Never For Ever".

nedless summer (Ówen P.), Monday, 3 September 2012 15:14 (9 months ago) Permalink

I'm 100% in favour of remixing and revising and think more people should do it. Even when it creates crap, which it does, like 90% of the time, having a polished-up crap version only sharpens the ingenuity of the original

nedless summer (Ówen P.), Monday, 3 September 2012 15:16 (9 months ago) Permalink

(Not calling '86 "Kick Inside" vocal takes crap, mind)
