never heard "pussy is mine" before. there's definitely the workings of a dope song there, but sounds kinda demo-ish

ticagrelor rotini (k3vin k.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

the version of "candles" that's on the album is the slower version that he's been playing live

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:47 (eleven years ago) link

i'm glad it's not just the EP version w/ the Lennon sample cut out, that weirdly makes that version of the song work for me

some dude, Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:50 (eleven years ago) link

p much loathe 'candles' and deplore the long, grody post-ocean shadow it casts over this album and the adorn/use me/arch in point axis

more glam, less dress-up hippy cruft

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 August 2012 06:57 (eleven years ago) link

truthfully does anyone even actually wanna hear miggy attempt a song titled 'kaleidoscope dream' (let alone name the effing album after it) cos i'm just saying nuh uh

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 August 2012 07:01 (eleven years ago) link

kinda feel that reusing ADC songs misses the point of ADC but oh well

"where's the fun in forever" might be more lol than "pussy is mine"

agree with this even tho the new version of "Adorn" is basically my favorite thing ever

The Reverend, Thursday, 16 August 2012 07:07 (eleven years ago) link

i can see why they'd put arch n point on there tho

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 07:09 (eleven years ago) link

"arch & point" is the best ADC song yeah but if you want to reuse ADC tracks have the decency to put them as bonus tracks or something - if the next preview EP is tracks 4-6 that'll leave us with uhhh two new songs when the album drops

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 August 2012 07:11 (eleven years ago) link

i'd have less of a problem with reusing the tracks if it seemed as if the album was gonna be like the finished expanded apotheosis of the adc ep sketches, but it doesnt and so feels more like a cheaper cherrypick

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 August 2012 07:18 (eleven years ago) link

the title track btw is definitely arty but it sounded pretty cool -- prod by salaam

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 07:52 (eleven years ago) link

I do have to give Salaam his dues for being reliable as fuck.

The Reverend, Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:03 (eleven years ago) link

the album has a lot of guitars tho, so arch n point will fit well sonically... It's not a straight cherry pick

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:12 (eleven years ago) link

I think it's been fairly obvious that Migs loves his guitars.

The Reverend, Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:13 (eleven years ago) link

salaam is one of the best producers of all time but phones it in these days pretty much, "reliable" is his bare minimum

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:14 (eleven years ago) link

like if you got him on pcp and told him to make a track out of some pots and pans it'd come out sounding reliable

"guitars so fits" is so inane idk what to even say

what

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:37 (eleven years ago) link

I've heard basically the entire album... It's "cherry picking" in the sense that, yes, he's taking one of the singles from ADC but it totally fits with the direction of the album. It's no biggie. He's putting a good song on his album.

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:48 (eleven years ago) link

i'm also okay with how he's releasing the album... I think the argument could be made that he's finding an agreeable middle ground between an album leaking outside of the artist's control and the level of buzz you need to have to find the elusive "everyone hearing it at once" feeling (like frank ocean or watch the throne)

tauheed & cambria (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:56 (eleven years ago) link

you only seem to be seeing one direction here though, is where we disagree

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 August 2012 09:06 (eleven years ago) link

i like the way he's staggering releases but i dunno how well it's working if people itt are already finding ways to be unhappy about him releasing 17 mostly dope songs in one year

some dude, Thursday, 16 August 2012 11:08 (eleven years ago) link

Adorn might well be my song of the year.

The ADC Candles In the Sun almost sounds a bit channel orangey, no?

(professor) (longneck), Thursday, 16 August 2012 12:45 (eleven years ago) link

well it came out before that album -- it actually weirded me out to hear the phrase "candles in the sun" in the last track of the frank ocean but i guess it's a more common phrase than i realized

what makes Miguel beautiful?

I know it came out before channel orange, that's why I wrote "almost". But strip it down a bit and they're definitely talking the same musical language.

found this after searching "ledisi" and re-reading part of the 2011 r&b thread - don't think i'd ever heard it before!

also found this otm statement

and "sure thing" is cool but "Teach Me" is the best song on that Miguel album imo

trying to remember the last time a contemporary R&B album with this high a profile came out w/ no obligatory guest rappers

Forgive me for asking probably easy-to-find info, but is there a release date yet?

complex said that the song he wrote for alicia keys in jamaica (and that her backing vocals are on) is "candles in the sun" but i don't think that's right -- for one, when i talked to him he told me that it was "where's the fun in forever" & also having heard at least one version of "candles," i don't think her vocals are on that

young money color me badd (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 August 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

jer: he's releasing a three-song preview on 9/11, full thing is out 10/2

happy to find out miguel also has thunder thighs

jack chick-fil-A (dayo), Monday, 27 August 2012 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

Excellent. I mean, these staggered EP releases have been nice, but a full album makes things a lot easier for year-end ranking purposes.

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Monday, 27 August 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

IF the album is worth ranking above Art Dealer Chic. we'll see.

some dude, Monday, 27 August 2012 16:52 (eleven years ago) link

Well, yeah. But isn't a good chunk of ADC gonna be on this?

this is the dream of avril and chad (jer.fairall), Monday, 27 August 2012 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

three songs -- i think it's gonna be as good or better. ADC does have some throwaways.

Fuckin broads.

seriously, if he keeps making album covers like this, i will have to keep making Avatar: The Last Airbender jokes.

yeah, I don't really know how Internet memes work, but I am picturing Flying Miguel photobombing all sorts of news and sports images, dunking on Kobe or Billy Corgan or whatever
