It occurs to me that we haven't mentioned America's first ever black all-American footballer here: Paul Robeson.

Didn't someone in DOA play league hockey in Canada? Puck Rock, anyone?

Derrick -- thank you. I've been waiting for days for someone to take the bait or call the joke with that photo. It's Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, and any resemblence between Messier and that crossdressing Iowan pictured above is just a fluke of genetics. Still a great, great, great band. Hall of Famers in their own right.

bill slayback, denny mclain, and i believe roberto clemente all made albums, i think, but i never heard them.

and does nelly count? didn't he play a year or two of single A ball? or something?

chuck, Monday, 15 November 2004 01:00 (8 years ago) Permalink

and charlie pride also played in the minor leagues, i think.

winner, though, i think is toby keith. tight end for the bengals or something like that, right?

Wasn't Rod Stewart nearly a professional (soccer)football player?

this thread is striking me as pretty ahistorical right now.like, there must have been guys in the memphis jug band or misssissppi shieks who also played in the negro leagues; it just seems logical. we just have no idea who they are. and was famous early 20th/late 19th century baseball star billy sunday also a famous white gospel singer or did he just do sermons? i have no idea. also even more recently wasn't john fred of the playboy band/"judy in disguise with glasses" fame a basketball star at louisiana state or thereabouts or was that his dad? i totally forget. point being that music and sports didn't just start yesterday you know. okay carry on.

I missed the photo; doesn't look that much like him, to be honest. Mark's got a bigger jaw. I just got really excited at the random canadiana of that idea... and you've let me down.

der lead zanger um Rammstein = east german olympic swim champeen, no?

also ted nugent, if bow-hunting counts

chuck, Monday, 15 November 2004 06:23 (8 years ago) Permalink

der lead zanger um Rammstein = east german olympic swim champeen, no?

does that mean that he's really an east german chiXor pumped up w/ too many steroids?

actually, if that were true that would make EVERYTHING fit into place wr2 rammstein.

Looking at the picture of the Bears, I seem to recall that William "The Refrigerator" Perry was actually known to his teammates by another nickname, "Biscuit" because "he was just a biscuit under 305" or something like that? Is this correct?

Henry A Blacktune, Monday, 15 November 2004 07:44 (8 years ago) Permalink

johnny bench did c&w gigs; may or may not made records.

alice cooper, iggy pop, huey lewis, and darius rucker a/k/a/ hootie said to have real good golf handicaps; perhaps not quite PGA quality though.

how good a tennis player was lars ulrich in pre-metallica days? was he ever actually "seeded" (whatever that means) in denmark? his much cooler dad played wimbledon (and was a jazz musician) i believe.

Torben Ulrich lost a tight five-setter vs John Newcombe in the last sixteen of the '68 US Open, which is pretty good going considering he was 40 by that time.

I fear that Pat Cash and John McEnroe may have may a record or two (Mac certainly toured with his own band, much to the growing disgust of his wife); Jo Durie certainly did (it was 'orrible) and Jim Courier has played drums with REM. Yannick Noah has had several hits in France.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:54 (8 years ago) Permalink

Lars Ulrich was a seeded teen player.

Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Shows would promote their shows by showing up in town around noon, challenging all comers to a baseball game, then afterwards saying "tell you what, we licked you/you licked us, but why don't you come down to the dancehall tonight and we'll show you a thing or two about this fiddle music." Could it have worked for Black Flag? Maybe.

I can't believe nobody's mentioning David Ortiz's new reggaeton album (!), featuring somebody called Cynthia Roquez. It's entitled, regrettably, "Bases Loaded." I have a feeling it's the best thing in the world.

thurl bailey has a record or two out... (former NBA player)

"In addition to professional speaking, Thurl is a broadcast analyst for the Utah Jazz and the University of Utah, an actor, and an award winning singer/song writer. His first album, Faith In Your Heart, is a compilation of uplifting songs that won several top awards. His latest CD, ‘I’m Not The Same’ is released October 2002 with great reviews and is a fusion of original style R&B and nu soul."

There appear to be three versions of "For the Money" and two versions of, er, "Punani."

Needless to say, this is a must-buy.

this IS a joke, yes? and if not, how many copies of it have been sold in boston?

It's for real, and it's not very good. Here's a lo-fi RM file, provenance unknown, that I found somewhere. I haven't heard the full-length yet, but if this is the single, I don't have high hopes for the rest, sheer novelty value aside.

7 years pass...

Heard Cecil Taylor was a great basketball player, though he was considerably smaller than stereotypical players.

Was HR involved in anything organised athletically or just naturally athletic? Seen footage of those other DC types Fugazi pretty much slamdunking themselves through basketball hoops.
