linda perry isn't getting enough credit for the single.

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 20:30 (nineteen years ago) link

(especially considering GS cried about having to work with her - GOOD CALL)

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 20:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm glad to hear that a lot of you are liking it too. It seems like a pretty divisive record right now, but the people who like it enjoy the hell out of it. My favorites are "What You Waiting For?," "Luxurious," "Cool," and "Bubble Pop Electric."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

worst record of the year.

chaki in charge (chaki), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the thing she did on the MTV europe awards.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Bit disappointing that the single and first track on the album is the BEST track.
But it's a good CD. "Whatchoowaitinfor" screams LENE LOVICH to my new wave attuned ears.

DR SCott, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Chaki is a wise and good man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I dunno. My vote's for that new U2 piece o' turd as Worst /Most Overhyped record of the year. The GS record at least pulls off what I think it attempts, which is to pay homage to the music she loves to listen to, poor taste or not.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

i think they are both awful but gwen actually has worse lyrics than bono if you can imagine that.

chaki in charge (chaki), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

At least Gwen hasn't promoted her new record by booking the Clinton Presidential Library and a moving Manhattan flatbed truck. Just saying.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 22:22 (nineteen years ago) link

by the way, the correct way to make a Lene Lovich comparison is à la Bruce LaBruce – "it's so Lene, I Lovich!"

"rich girl" interpolates the fiddler on the roof song in pretty much exactly the same way as lady saw's (at least a year old?) "if i was a rich girl"

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 25 December 2004 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

why aren't people excited about "hollaback girl"?? so reinvented pop-fascists pfork lambast it for lacking "club potential", big fucking deal - shit is bananas!! neptunes extremist beat of the year (ok so it's kinda like 'belly dancer', but who heard that anyway)! when the guitar comes in for the first time i get the shivers!

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 December 2004 12:36 (nineteen years ago) link

(ps thanks spizzazzz)

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 December 2004 12:38 (nineteen years ago) link

it has synth horns that quote 'another one bites the dust'! i really don't know what's not to like here

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 December 2004 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

'bubble pop electric' is really nice too! for better or worse i now equate andre's name with 'overreaching', so i can't help feel it's trying a BIT too hard (plus after that 'my favourite things' cover on TLB he should be ordered to stay 500 yards away from DnB at all). i'm prob just too uptight tho, it really is good

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 December 2004 12:57 (nineteen years ago) link

somehow i managed to accquire this on LP for free. ive listened to sides 1 & 2 and then lost interest.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 26 December 2004 15:00 (nineteen years ago) link

feel free to pass it on to me, maria

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 December 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

im not passing it along to anyone, except for perhaps, ebay.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 26 December 2004 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

while i dislike no doubt, linda perry, and andre 3000, i really dig this. it's vying with scissor sisters for frankensteinian pop guilty pleasure of the year for me.

Gwen is more fun that Pink.
This is good earwormwood.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

i wanna know what tim finney thinks of 'hollaback'.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:12 (nineteen years ago) link

At first I thought this was massively frontloaded - What You Waiting For? through to Bubble Pop Electric are all amazing - but dropped off really quickly, but the second half is great as well, it's just that Luxurious is unlistenable.

Hollaback Girl really does encapsulate Gwen's whole agenda - make a shiny pop album which could be a complete flop or complete success, no telling which, but in the process hitch yourself unashamedly to big name producers but also be as bonkers as you want because life is short, you're capable.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:15 (nineteen years ago) link

one month passes...
Is there only the album mix of "Hollaback Girl" - it's a monster at some clubs I've been to, but when I listen to the album version it's nowhere near as good...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I think "Hollaback Girl" is one of the most horrible things I've ever heard.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I think that's my favorite on the record. The way she says "bananas" kills me.

dan. (dan.), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

haha speak of the devil, they just played it on the radio...thankfully they cut it off before the "bananas" part.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

it is a good record.

The sample on "Luxurious" is the best omg! wtf! moment of the whole album. ILX totally has been sleeping on this.

why aren't people excited about "hollaback girl"?? so reinvented pop-fascists pfork lambast it for lacking "club potential"

The Lex said he heard this out on Friday.

'Rich Girl' would be a lot better if it had a real chorus (and no, I haven't heard the original - last time Fiddler was on I was out). On this basis, Girls Aloud should put out 'Grafitti My Soul' next - it's a lot better.

BARMS, Monday, 21 March 2005 15:01 (nineteen years ago) link

a lot of the backinitial frothing about this album went on between the likes of me and Affectian while the board was in that black hole a few months back. our posts are long gone, but far from 'sleeping' on any aspect in actual fact we were right on the £££ about it right from the get go!

piscesboy, Monday, 21 March 2005 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

cover of the nme this week, which makes a nice change i feel.

piscesboy, Thursday, 24 March 2005 11:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Any idea what the third single is going to be? If she doesn't release "Bubble Pop Electric", complete with 1950s video...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

'Hollerback Girl' is the next single, I believe.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, saw photos of the clip.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

heard on MTV last week that it's 'hollaback girl'.
an insane move considering 'cool' exists.
why, incidentally don't they let lu cont do a remix of the whole album?

piscesboy, Thursday, 24 March 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Hollerback Girl is easily the third or fourth best song on the record. Cool is ok but it sounds like No Doubt, which I think she's trying to play down, considereing Rich Girl was also a single and it's no good.

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Girls fucking LOVE hollaback girl. My friend's girlfriend made me play it at a house party. She did an i-told-you-so. She was right. mmmhmm, thats my shit.

deej., Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

'Rich Girl' is great, it nags and nags and that's good. Too much hatin' on it. Next best track (after the Lu Cont mix of 'What you waiting for') is so obviously 'Real Thing', New Order should quit dragging out new increasingly-boring albums and work with pop acts instead.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I HEART the part of Rich Girl that goes "alllll the riches baby..." and then its that stupid melody lift.

deej., Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

The only rubbish thing about it is the ugly sea-shanty video. Big disappointment after the lovely & slick mess of 'what you waiting for'. I thought 'Real thing' was a guaranteed single choice, am I on my own here?

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:24 (nineteen years ago) link

yep. it's just you.

piscesboy, Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't understand what I'm supposed to dislike about "Rich Girl". Even Eve's totally token intro rap thrills me, but maybe that's just because she looks so awesome striding down the boat in the video clip.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:55 (nineteen years ago) link

why is teh release date a sign her company doesn't like it?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 23 November 2006 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

it wont qualify for this year's 'best of 2006' threads ;_;

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 23 November 2006 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

People only buy Best Of albums and stuff by fullblown marquee players (Westlife, etc) at Xmas

dommy p is alright WHICH IS A LOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY ABOUT A LOT OF PEOPLE (Dom, Thursday, 23 November 2006 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

but her last album came out only two weeks before that!

she is a marquee name now.

dyl, Monday, 20 October 2014 14:41 (nine years ago) link

i think it's decent -- sounds like a bangerz left over though

generally just feels very of the moment & generic, maybe that was to be expected though given how long she's been away

this holds up so well (loveangelmusicbaby), classic status for me. cool, rich girl, hollaback girl, luxurious- ridiculously good. harajuku girls, the real thing, bubble pop, what you waiting for, crash- also great. Cool is pretty much perfect.
listening to a lot of charlie xcx at the same time and gwen's vocals are like this fantastic mellow version of charlies, only gwen has immensely better production behind her here.

I used to think she was so cool, now she creeps me out. And her taste in men is like one notch superior to that of Serena Williams
