The only way Conan could possibly be worse than Leno would be if he suddenly morphed into a transsexual Hitler and his entire show consisted of him shouting "HONOR THE FUEHRER!" while shooting jalepeno peppers out of his ass.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Wait , that would make him WORSE?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Hey, if you like Hitlerboobs, be my guest.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

am., how do you feel about the talk show aspects of the Daily Show (mainly Jon Stewart's interviews of various celebrities and politicians)?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Conan isn't "edgy," but he and his writers often present an amusing sort of absurd humor

Exactly.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I agree, I like his sketches a lot more than his interviews, which are mostly about him anyway.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

And since when has edgy = good?

Huk-L, Monday, 27 September 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I see where you're going with this point, but that would be totally awesome. I'd watch that every night. "Hney look! It's the Tranny Hitler Ass Pepper show!" I mean, how could that not be entertaining?

Ain't That Peculiar (kenan), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, if he was shooting them at the guests (and actually able to keep the big time celebs showing up) this would be the best show of all time.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:45 (nineteen years ago) link

we're not talking about porn!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe we should be.

'Cuz Conan really SUCKS these days.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Did anyone catch the episode last spring where Conan got mail from Finland (as a part of the "Conan O'Brien Hates My Country" series)? I haven't got a nationalist bone in me, but it was still kinda weird and cool hearing the Finnish national anthem in his show while he praised our wood industry and mocked Sweden.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:48 (nineteen years ago) link

tonight on Conan...Matthew Perry ("HONOR THE FUHRER!" "oh GOD no!")! Tea Leoni! ("HONOR THE FUHRER!" "ACK! MY EYE!") and Clay Aiken ("HONOR THE FUHRHER!" "*smiles blankly and tries not to stare at Conan's anus*)!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

musical guests totally need to be dodging spicy anal projectiles.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:50 (nineteen years ago) link

With Jon Stewart, you get the sense that his modesty and self-deprecation are real. With Conan it seems like much more of a character that he's putting on. That doesn't make him any less funny though, even if he isn't as good of a 'real' interviewer.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

This is all theory for me though, as I haven't been able to get in network, much less cable, tv in over a year.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, so when is ILE going to pool their finances to get me a production job on a talk show so I can implement this abhorrent-yet-wildly-entertaining show?

sometimes the non-celebrity segments of conan are funny, but lately (last 5 years?) he just seems totally exhaused and spent and bored

Thanks to the underdog timeslot and pedigree people see "edge" and more important, 'funny' that isn't there in COnan's show, never has been except sporadically. Letterman isn't cool to watch anymore but he still OWNZ(sp?).

tremendoidredcat, Monday, 27 September 2004 19:47 (nineteen years ago) link

jon stewart is a bad interviewer. he interrupts people all the time. it's annoying.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

that's true - he hits most people with a barrage of questions but doesn't let them answer.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I turn off the Daily Show when it hits the interview portion. They're just painful, super-awkward and rarely funny.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:56 (nineteen years ago) link

But Stewart can be very, very funny whenever he makes an off-the-cuff joke. His interviews with actors (especially when they're on a similar wavelength) can be as entertaining as the rest of the show.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:57 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe Stewart will get Letterman's spot if and when he ever retires

gabbneb, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

It means that NBC still doesn't realize that the small size of the Conan audience will kill Tonight

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 14:39 (sixteen years ago) link

the LA Times article that MSNBC one references, which sheds way more light on the situation:

haha, I went to a Conan taping in college a few years ago. Of course, there were a lot of tourists, especially from 666 Middle America 666. So Conan's doing his antics with one of the audience members, this big old lumbering guy you'd think was from like ... Illinois or something. Basically, Jay Leno's audience.

So Conan's gets up and starts dancing with the guy, and the guy realllllly reluctantly goes along. and then Conan gives him Max's drumsticks.

On the elevator after the taping, we're on there with that guy and he says to his family, "man, just when I thought I was gettin over my homerphobia" and then "and here I got those Mick Windberg fellas drumsticks." We get off the elevator and he throws them in the garbage.

I'm not sure how well Conan will do in Leno's slotttttttt. He shoulda just stayed really weird instead of trying to bridge the gap to blandsville, baby.

Leno doesn't get a Massachusetts priest stalking him...

A show like this in the 10pm hour is actually a good idea. I just wish it was someone besides Jay Leno.

i watched jay tonight after yearsssss and he wasn't as bad as i remembered. conan otoh has been pretty shitty for a while now. he can be funny when he is outside of the late show format (uncensored). a tonight show thingy will be v. iuntersting to witness, because he kind of hates people. so so interesting. i'll sure be taking notes, don't know about anyone else.

This was only fun when there was frantic hair-pulling and eye-gouging between Conan, Leno and the NBC execs.

Aimless, Monday, 17 May 2010 17:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm still looking forward to the show. Stewart and Colbert both repeat about 4 times per day, so I can catch them after the fact.

Roffle:

Big news on the late night TV battlefront today: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno posted its lowest-rated Q2 -- the first full quarter since Leno came back as host after Conan O'Brien was dumped -- since the Late Show with David Letterman launched on CBS in 1993.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 1 July 2010 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Read a review of Conan's live show somewhere and they said he mostly just made jokes about the controversy for most of the time. Is this true? Sounds like it would get old fast.

Beach Pomade (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 1 July 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

it's funny. i saw a "tweet" from o'brien the other day, riffing on the controversy, and it fell flat for me.

but he's a funny -- and, here's the key -- inventive guy. he'll find new material. also: bitterness can be a great springboard for comedy.
