i think rtc is mad because an online music magazine called slackk "future grime"

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

Nah, nah, he's hyper-grime. Intelligent grime for dickheads, right?

I think I may agree with Lex in that Ikonika's newest overshadows this one considerably, similar sound palette.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

Still the CGI is cool, and 99% of juke/trap/whatever coming out of the UK is just annoying.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

i'm surprised it's contemporary cgi!

Lunice, sounding like a twat

“(Mohawke) was saying, a lot of people on major labels, they know we’re around. They’re very well aware of us, but don’t even bother trying to contact us. They just straight frickin’ rob us, almost. I wouldn’t say ‘rob’ – (they) just get the idea, then get another producer to do it. And for a while we were like, ‘Whatever, we’ve got our own little scene going, I don’t mind and it’s all good”. But after that we were like, “Okay, okay, hold up, it’s getting a little too obvious!”

“We didn’t think about breaking in fully until we did the TNGHT project together, and the response we got from rappers from that. We were like, “You know what? Let’s just straight bring it in. Straight bring it in. We’ve been doing this shit for years, and it’s not like we’re new or anything, it’s not like we’re new money shit, it’s not like we came out of the blue and we blew up like crazy. We’ve built a whole foundation of our work. So it’s about that time. I feel like that sort of movement is backed with all of our homies together, like: “This is us! You can’t do this shit! You can’t just take our ideas and come up with it all after all these years. We’re coming for you!’ (Laughs). That kind of thing.”

xxxp eh i am nothing like a tru grime soldier and couldnt really give a stuff how it gets dressed up these days. grime lifers are p much the worst tbh

just inchoate contempt and eye-rolling for chillwave 8bar and the wonderful world of fact music debasing every currency available as usual is all

i know i shouldve been grown up enough to resist straying onto this terre mavaise again

at least they're unapologetic/direct about wanting to make rap beats and do production work for mainstream vocalists, that's kind of refreshing.

who would want to apologize for making $$$$$ is what i want to know

the late great, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

i was more talking about the "they're stealing our ideas" bit

Number None, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't Kanye just commission a remix from them?

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

dunno? Mohawke contributed "additional instruments" to "Mercy"

Number None, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

who would want to apologize for making $$$$$ is what i want to know

i mean wanting to engage with u.s. rap artists rather than just making their own insular/instrumental version of it.

i was more talking about the "they're stealing our ideas" bit

yeah that's ridiculous. i don't doubt that lots of u.s. producers are aware of them, but clearly a ton of ideas have flowed the other way.

On a brighter note, Eprom's take on this sound is kind of more my thing.

I don't know if any of you follow SergDun on twitter but his rants about "nerds ruining trap" have been entertaining.

I love Shigeto, thanks for the heads up on that one. You're the Jordan that lives in Madison, right?

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:37 (eleven years ago) link

yup - are you in town?

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I thought it was funny that we both listen to and make the same general kinds of music in the same city and haven't ever met.

Unless you hang out at the DJ shop or know Wyatt Agard, I used to go to his Ableton classes.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that is crazy given what a small town this is, although i don't go out to a ton of shows/dj nights unless i'm playing or a friend is. i might have met wyatt once through my friend nate, but don't know him.

we should hang though, lemme know if you have a gig coming up or whatever.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

I pretty much gave up deejaying when I started to get serious about making beats again, I've got the Traktor setup but its been gathering dust for a while.

Need to get back on that horse soon, I guess.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

word. we should probably take it off-thread but i've been doing Chants shows at least monthly, come say hi sometime!

At risk of turning this thread into my blog, anyone listened to the NeferTT release on Hotflush?

I've been trying to figure out who it might be, Falty DL, Machinedrum, maybe Boxcutter?

Pyramel is cool.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 13 September 2012 01:13 (eleven years ago) link

It's a duo i think? Falty DL is definitely involved though

Number None, Thursday, 13 September 2012 12:33 (eleven years ago) link

I could definitely see this being Falty DL and Boxcutter, sounds like a halfway point between their styles.

forget what counts as dance and what counts as bobbins and what counts as bass, but a friend of mine who spins in the city a lot and constantly is putting stuff together but until recently hasn't bothered putting anything out got a track on this top billing comp. http://topbillinmusic.bandcamp.com/album/bass-bonez-compiled-by-flipperi-2

haven't gotten a chance to spin the whole thing, but his joint is 'Always Got My Back' and I've been enjoying it / think it's good enough to call folks attn to.

Seems like most of the producers that I like from this thread ended up making techno. Or maybe I'm just listening to more techno, dunno.

Having EDM artists colonize your scene has a way of making people a little musically conservative, even Ikonika is talking about listening to Legowelt. Kryptic Minds, Untold, lots of people.

The other options are what? White boy juke? Trap? Endless Burial ripoffs?
