A friend came to visit from London, I said, Marc Maron lives down the street, we see him all the time. Friend and I went for huaraches on our first day out, as we are sitting outside, I catch Marc getting out of a car across the street and walking towards us. I cough at my friend "ARK ARON!!!", give it the eyes, which I'm sure was obvious, but I wanted to give my friend his official LA celebrity sighting. Maron walks past us into the restaurant with a young woman (not his girlfriend) and he is saying to her "so, do you want to get into comedy writing or not?". It was very Marc.

still on Oliver: loved the dynamic between him and Maron, it was reminiscent of when Scharpling first appeared on that live ep. either Maron should try and get him on again, or maybe more WTFs should be done at 7.30AM before he has time to neuroticise about anything

It sounds like Maron and Scharpling have plans to do more together, but going by the success of their last paid podcast, I don't think we'll be getting any more free material involving the two.

Maron on Jay Mohr's podcast was fun.

Steam Sale Jonesin' (kingfish), Thursday, 26 July 2012 01:51 (eleven years ago) link

I meant get Oliver on again!

I refused to buy Marc And Tom ep 2 because iTunes charged almost double for it in Australia >:(

the most recent one from nashville, in front of an audience, was the unfunniest thing i've ever heard. it was painful.

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 26 July 2012 02:18 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh, yeah, that was the worst live one yet. And I was really looking forward to Retta. Her story about Nick Offerman and "vagina" was the only laugh I got out of the whole thing.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 26 July 2012 02:20 (eleven years ago) link

i listen 2 almost every ep but i stopped listening 2 the live ones a while ago

johnny crunch, Thursday, 26 July 2012 02:23 (eleven years ago) link

how that this is on real radio i can hear it sometime.

Ben Stiller said he was "just hanging out" at the Improv around 1990, but I think he means the successful LA one rather than the sinking NY flagship I was appearing at.

do you not have a computer, then?

The ten "best-of" radio episodes were done 14 months ago btw

¥╡*ٍ*╞¥ (sic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 01:17 (eleven years ago) link

I am gen too lazy to listen to podcasts (have no mobile devices either). Also, my fave baseball one simply stopped downloading for me in April.

Those radio-ified episodes are playing on WNYC now.

Misses a lot of good stuff, though, you can listen to the full ones on iTunes or on his website, no mobile thing required.

Was hoping this self-analysis episode would be good, but it's really just Marc and other guys going around in circles about podcast culture. Meh.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 July 2012 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

more playing catch up:

kevin hart, chris elliott and merchant sound like good dudes. i don't remember a thing about any of them, they are all dudes who have had p simple and successful careers, bar a usual set-back here and there.

"deep beyond Wang" (a hoy hoy), Monday, 30 July 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

got a few wtf bingo card scores too, with the black room differences w/ hart and 'hey what about stewart lee' w/ merchant

listening to that 100th episode reminded me about maron's problem with asians

Download Chris Elliott's movie "Cabin Boy"....so funny.

Iago Galdston, Monday, 30 July 2012 23:41 (eleven years ago) link

With the 300th episode, I suggest just skipping to Andy Kindler.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 06:16 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that guy from the onion was painful to listen to...

Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 13:48 (eleven years ago) link

I recommend skipping the 300th episode. I knew it would be a clap himself on the back kind of thing, but it was dull.

can someone explain to me why the Stewart Lee is rated so highly by Maron? I'm like 10 minutes from the end and it's mostly shoptalk (I've never seen Stewart Lee's act btw, is he any good?)

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link

i adore stewart lee

the bob golub ep is great

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:36 (eleven years ago) link

Lee is great, has a very unique delivery & pacing...youtube him, you won't be disappointed.

Maron made him "his guy" because of what he says about his change in philosophy when he quit & came back, the way he became empathetic to people who hated his comedy. Maron got a huge kick out of hearing that.

OK thanks, set the controls, I'll def check him out!

This made me adore Stewart Lee:

Sun? Sun? It's your cousin, Marvin Ra (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 5 August 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

Also he is just a very easy example of something Maron just doesn't know anything about, in this case British comedy.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 5 August 2012 02:57 (eleven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Maron has been doing a live show at the Steve Allen theater for a couple weeks in a row and I caught the last one tonight. I believe these shows were all to road test new material but his live act now - especially seeing it live - reminds me a lot of Jean Shepherd's style in how he changes his voice, references earlier bits of the show when you aren't expecting it, etc. Maybe Shepherd + Bogosian.

Jesus though, he can call up a stream of derisive contempt like a jet afterburner.

The Tony Millionaire interview was fantastic. I loved hearing him talk about Berlin in the 80s

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 12:01 (eleven years ago) link

Tenacious D interview was surprisingly great. I mean, I love those 2 anyway but they were cool

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 24 August 2012 17:15 (eleven years ago) link

I loved when they were like, "name one song, Marc! one song! We'll play your favorite!"

EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 August 2012 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

I liked that KG was open about struggling with being the 'other guy'

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 24 August 2012 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

Definitely humanized Jack too. Good all around.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 August 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

that James Adominan interview was pretty disappointing. He's one of the funniest people to appear on the show yet, but Maron seemed disinterested until nearly the end.

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

I listened to it, but it's the first WTF ep I've listened to in a few weeks. I had to take a short break from Maron, but I thought it was an okay episode to come back to. I really don't know Adominan all that well, so every part of the interview was new information for me.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 18:56 (eleven years ago) link

I fell off the WTF wagon for about a year and I'm in the process of catching up chronologically. Since I just listened to it, I wanted to mention that Steve Almond was pretty clearly someone who solicited Marc for an interview and who I started to actively dislike pretty quickly but that the discussion eventually turned around and became surprisingly interesting and involving. Just for those of you who (understandably) wrote that episode off without listening to the whole thing.

Old Lunch, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

Adomian.

itt: i forgot that he yells at a butt (sic), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

i cant see the adomian one in my itunes but i want to listen to it cuz i saw him a couple times at just for laughs and he was amazing.
