So I haven't bought anything by these guys forever, but I just took a gamble and bought Son of a Bitches Brew based solely on the cover art and the Miles references. Will I be disappointed?

Probably not. All their albums are kind of the same, but also all different.

The New Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 22 July 2012 20:24 (eleven years ago) link

they are best live, though.

Anyone hear their thing with Stearica? Quickly listening on YT, doesn't sound like AMT at all! (Very restrained.)

Btw, just bought a copy of La Novia for $11!

Claudia Schiffer Kills Frog (Leee), Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

Haven't heard it but I do own about 30 of their albums and I think they are at their best when most restrained!!!

liam fennell, Monday, 8 October 2012 11:46 (eleven years ago) link

La Novia is probably my favorite thing of theirs.

Mine too.

Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Monday, 8 October 2012 13:52 (eleven years ago) link

La Novia is definitely among their very best. Mantra of Love is also really great and along the same lines, a little dreamier perhaps but like La Novia it is an interpretation of an Occitan folk tunes.

I guess it's worth posting some recommendations since their catalog is so overwhelming. I'm not a huge fan of the live show and the albums that are more freaked-out, although I do like that side of the band of course. I just much prefer the drone and low-key oriented works (and also the more Hawkwind-esque rock action of AMT Cosmic Inferno!) to the standard AMT sound.

Other favorites of mine are In 0 to Infinity, Interstellar Guru and Zero, Magical Power from Mars, Troubadours from Another Heavenly World. These albums are mostly drone/looping/synth focused.

Although not even remotely restrained, the AMT Cosmic Inferno albums Anthem of the Space, Cosmic Funeral Route 666, LAO Chant From the Cosmic Inferno are all pretty essential too if you've acquired the taste.

The Andromelos (Kawabata + Masonna/Space Machine) album is awesome and pretty undervalued. It's spacey synthesizers (think a slightly unhinged Tangerine Dream) and live drums.

I also really like Kawabata's solo things that I've heard, esp. Hosanna Mantra and Your Voice From The Moon, which are drone/ambient focused and quite excellent.

liam fennell, Monday, 8 October 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link

La Novia is way cool, but my favorite out of the ones I've heard is definitely the first one. SPEED GURU. Plus, Pink Lady Lemonade is at its best as an eight minute sigh imo

need to give the new one Son of a Bitches Brew a listen, I really liked the AMT albums released last year...

Finally listening to that (first?) Stearica collab, and woah, it barely sounds like AMT aside from some scifi fx in the background, otherwise this is sometimes HEAVY, usually moody post-metal.

I recently managed to get hold of the "Hey Good Child"/"You're My Boy" single and enjoyed it. This is my first listen to AMT - is there anything else in their back catalogue akin to those songs, or is that release a bit atypical? Other stuff I've sampled (and bear in mind, it wasn't much) didn't seem too similar. Any help appreciated

Duane Barry, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 19:42 (ten years ago) link

I haven't heard "You're My Boy," but they do have a bunch of more sedate releases (La Novia being the consensus fav in this regard, and there's also Mantra of Love), if not actually sharing the same acoustic (+ effects) arrangements.

Neil Nosepicker (Leee), Sunday, 5 January 2014 22:13 (ten years ago) link

Thanks. If you're curious the single is at this blog:

Duane Barry, Sunday, 5 January 2014 22:55 (ten years ago) link

neither of these tracks sound particularly atypical. many of their albums (not that i've heard even half of them) feature tracks like these tucked between the heavier stuff.

Been a few years since I've seen them and that's long overdue, so -- upcoming American tour:

I'll be at the second to last date in SF -- Dire Wolves also on the bill, that's Jeffrey from the Iditarod/Black Forest Black Sea's newest band, their own album is about out, so in sum, should be great.

lol wtf they're playing in my town this Autumn?!?

I've never actually listened to this band, where do I start because tbh good live experiences are pretty hard to come by in this place so I'm probably going to go to this

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 30 June 2018 00:53 (five years ago) link

i'm sure people will have plenty of recs but honestly they put on a great show that's not really contingent on knowing anything about their music. basically just be up for some heavy psych jams and you're good to go.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 30 June 2018 01:22 (five years ago) link

I am def up for some heavy psych jams, I know they are known for that, so I'm probably definitely going anyway, but I'd like to listen to something first if I get around to it

Y'all (Ross), Saturday, 30 June 2018 02:59 (five years ago) link

I love seeing them live, I almost never listen to them outside that context. The music is good, but the experience of the live show is really the AMT thing.

otm

Y'all (Ross), Saturday, 30 June 2018 03:13 (five years ago) link

My pick of the albums I've heard is the first one, but La Novia and In C I think are the big favorites from others. They will play Pink Lady Lemonade and it will sound amazing. Last time I saw them they played this:

i've never listened to any of their records- they come here once a year, every april, and i'm always there. definitely go

dude Acid Mothers Temple is the best live band ever you should absolutely go. bring earplugs if you want to be able to hear anything ever again.

Jang Mo Jib (Ross), Saturday, 30 June 2018 20:38 (five years ago) link

their shows are so awesome, glad to be reminded of it, and imagining them roadtripping around basically the entire world putting them on constantly is an inspiring image.

Every song is ripe for a 15 minute Jam

Ross, Monday, 23 July 2018 13:33 (five years ago) link

every song felt like an hour-long jam, somehow they got half a dozen of these into 50 minutes or so. a lot of the stuff was built up slowly layer on layer, one song in partic had a really long drummer/bassist riff at the beginning before the rest of the band gradually piled in until it reached peak freak out

diarrhoea of a blimpy kid (Noodle Vague), Monday, 23 July 2018 13:36 (five years ago) link

About right!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link

Maybe not the greatest gig of my life but top 5 easily. They seemed to enjoy it too. And it was a mid afternoon festival second stage, decent crows but quiet enough for me to be right up front.

diarrhoea of a blimpy kid (Noodle Vague), Monday, 23 July 2018 16:59 (five years ago) link

I think amt + baking hot summer day at a festival is a perfect thing but also possibly just a hair’s breath away from oh my god i’m having a brain haemorrhage territory
