Bands You could never allow yourself to like, given their (to your ears) indefensibly stupid name.

I'm just saying that I can't remeber the last time you said anything nice about anything. And if you did recently say anything nice about anything, it's been eclipsed by your general demeanor, which is certainly that of a sourpuss. I'm not saying you;re a bad sport or anything. Just that you're a bummer to be around.

Re PoM: Heh, yeah, I was watching cable at my parents' house yesterday, and MTV had some you-pick-the-next-video thing, where two videos go head to head, and at one point one of the choices was Puddle of Mudd, who (never having heard them) I hoped would lose only because of the name.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 29 November 2003 08:50 (twenty years ago) link

it may be fair to use the word "inscrutable" when the reference is not common knowledge.

Well, yeah, the only reason I have this knowledge is because of the band name. Therefore, still in the realm of the abstract.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 29 November 2003 08:51 (twenty years ago) link

What a strange concept.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Saturday, 29 November 2003 08:53 (twenty years ago) link

Indeed.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 29 November 2003 08:57 (twenty years ago) link

broken social scene.

Elliott (ebb), Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:02 (twenty years ago) link

a "bummer to be around?" When did I invite you to my house?

I post positive stuff about things I like all the time. It's just that you don't, or won't, or can't, see/read it. Also, this is not the most positive thread subjet matter on ILM, but I don't see you jumping down anyone else's throat.

hstencil, Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:14 (twenty years ago) link

When did I invite you to my house?

You didn't. Maybe that's why I'm bitter.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:18 (twenty years ago) link

well why would I when you take every opportunity (this thread isn't the only time it's happened) to go ballistic when I merely post an opinion (or in the case of this thread, a simple question)? I don't think I'm the one who needs to lighten up, and by telling you to fuck off it should be quite clear I'm tired of your bizarre pathological bullying. Okay?

hstencil, Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:20 (twenty years ago) link

Okay. I'm pathological and unstable, it's true. And you're habitually negative, which is also true. I see you saying pointedly negative and insulting things so often that it sinks in. It's not just your words, it's your tone. You HATE things, like, you really HATE things. That's weird to me, and I am now suspicious of your every opinion, fearful that it's tainted with HATE. And this was probably not the thread to go off on you, but whatever.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:28 (twenty years ago) link

right now the only thing I hate is you.

hstencil, Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:30 (twenty years ago) link

All nu metal ever. Pissing Razors, Korn, Sevendust, Puddle of Mudd, Soulfly, Linkin Park, Mudvayne, Deftones, HedPE, Staind, stuff already mentioned etc. All of it.

sucka (sucka), Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:31 (twenty years ago) link

the above two posts : nu metal lyrics?

sucka (sucka), Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:32 (twenty years ago) link

hm... me and hstencil doing a hate-themed version of "Guilty Conscience"?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 29 November 2003 09:35 (twenty years ago) link

Where I come from theres a football team called OMP.
- Orchesteral manoeuvers in the Park.
I always thought that was quite witty.

Limp Bizkit and Puddle of Mudd and Queens of the (new ?) stone age..
The worst possible names.
But maybe were all out of sync with what sounds cool these days...

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:16 (twenty years ago) link

Would you name a band Sounds Cool? We're all in sync, I guess.

nestmanso (nestmanso), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:23 (twenty years ago) link

Ben folds five - now theres a name that actually annoys me.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:31 (twenty years ago) link

"Only If You Call Me Jonathan". FUCK OFF.

You think Queens of the Stone Age is "the worst possible name"? On what grounds? Do you think you might look gay if you wear their T-shirt?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 29 November 2003 12:48 (twenty years ago) link

Death Cab for Cutie is terribly annoying.

NOFX. I hate names that I can't figure out how to say.

Debito (Debito), Saturday, 29 November 2003 12:53 (twenty years ago) link

The most recent one is Billy Talent. Lame name for a pretty good band.

Iam Anonentity, Saturday, 29 November 2003 13:26 (twenty years ago) link

Deaf + Tones = Deftones?

Seems to me a pretty clever name. I likes.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 29 November 2003 14:16 (twenty years ago) link

The Smashing Pumpkins. Love, love, love the band, can't stand the name.

also: The Cranberry Saw Us. Nearly as unforgiveable as the band they eventually became.

I also thought Pussy Crush was a horrible sounding name.

Neil FC (Neil FC), Saturday, 29 November 2003 14:52 (twenty years ago) link

Floetry!

Angus Gordon (angusg), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, Deftones actually isn't all that bad namewise.

I think An Emotional Fish actually has a good name. It says anomie or alienation but also passion at the same time.

sucka (sucka), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:26 (twenty years ago) link

DJ Mencap- No, why would I look gay in a queens of the stone age t-shirt ?

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

Like this ??

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

Jimmy Eat World has some decent songs, but the band name strikes me as being pretty questionable.

I've always liked "Deftones" as a play of words on being tone deaf.

John Fredland (jfredland), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

http://www.lakeshore-records.com/queensweb.jpg
Hmmm...

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:33 (twenty years ago) link

I always thought Queens of the Stone Age was a cool name, as it was one of things that attracted me to the band in the first place. It also aptly describes their music: heavy, primitive, but also quirky.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:35 (twenty years ago) link

some more:

Dufus
Moldy Peaches
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness
Speedball Baby
INXS

9. Phish

Hmmm...

BaronZen. He's also annoying.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:08 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry, Jackie O Motherfucker is a terrible name more suitable for some cheese-ass nu-metal band or something rather than the quite enjoyable group that they are. And from what I've read of his posts over the last couple months, hstencil seems to like a lot of things, like Thin Lizzy and improv and Nautical Almanac. Bands with good names.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:40 (twenty years ago) link

The Shins. When I heard one of their songs and actually liked it a lot, my reaction was, "but it's 'The Shins'! Why don't they suck a whole lot, like their name indicates they surely must?" Perhaps Shins is some sort of cultural reference I've missed, but consider Murry The Hump, back story or not it's still a godawful name to saddle your band with.

Poppy (poppy), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:44 (twenty years ago) link

modest mouse
peaches
good charlotte

bands with stupid names that i nonetheless adore:
echo and the bunnymen
we've got a fuzzbox and we're gonna use it
butthole surfers
the tubeway army

Honorable Shed 7 mention.

kinski (kinski), Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:48 (twenty years ago) link

Re: the Shins -- I had that same response to the Glands -- I was like, "Ewww, the Glands?" But then it was pretty good. Which I guess means this post should be on that other thread. Oops.

On topic: Frozen Ghost. Glass Tiger. White Lion.

But who am I to talk? I was in a band called Desert Ice. And I named it! (I was 15! I swear!)

spittle (spittle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:13 (twenty years ago) link

I agree that Floetry -- or in that case, any band name that attempts to sum up the bands sound or what they're aiming for -- is usually really bad.

However, I like His Name is Alive, for the soul reason as it sounds good when said aloud. That's the biggest problem I had when trying to come up with a band name, getting to something that I could tell people without being embarassed. I still haven't done it.

Bad band names of my own: ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. Godspeed You Black Emperor. And that's true, I still can't bring myself to listen to either bands music... and when my friend's play them in their cars, I try my best to tune it out.

David Allen, Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:25 (twenty years ago) link

I never thought "tone deaf" when I saw/heard the name Deftones. I thought of doo-wop groups like the Monotones, and thought it was really cool to combine hip-hop ("def") and doo-wop ("tones") that way, especially since about 2 people in their target audience were likely to get it, if that many.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 30 November 2003 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

The BANGS. Name brings to mind a sea of heads just a' bobbin' to the rock.

Super Furry Animals
definitely second Hoobastank -- obliquely evoking crotch-rot does not a good band name make
any jam band name that references eatin', dirty shit, or drugs

Clarke B., Sunday, 30 November 2003 22:24 (twenty years ago) link

There's a subcategory of bad bands that name themselves after comedy sketches. Ned's Atomic Dustbin naming themselves after a Goon Show episode. Toad The Wet Sprocket after a Python line.

"With maybe an exception or two, ALL full-sentence names are awful."

The exception being "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah". I've never heard their music and I'm not sure I even want to cause it might spoil my appreciation of their awesome name.

Actually, my personal specific exception was the awesome Nomeansno - a name that, in print, doesn't even LOOK like a full sentence.
