After reading it, I figured as much. Not me, though. Wish it was!

Really like the DIIV album, this label is probably the best thing going in indie rock right now.

Also, happened to notice that Best Buy had like 6 copies of DIIV, which seems pretty cool for a Captured Tracks release, good for them.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 20 July 2012 15:17 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the diiv is quite a bit better than i was expecting based on the 45s so far. pretty strong record.

the holograms is a bit the opposite - abc city is a cool record but i find the record as a whole a bit restrained and anonymous

bad wife decisions (electricsound), Saturday, 21 July 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

I really dig the Holograms album. it's like Iceage with a goth infusion. Memories of Sweat is a good song title.

I don't even know wtf this band sounds like I'm just trollin (fffv), Saturday, 21 July 2012 01:24 (eleven years ago) link

This fuckin' label. Picked up the Holograms today and its slaying me too. I'm kinda starting to feel about this label the way I did about like Matador back '94-'96.

sounds really really good

detune two oscillators...than what (electricsound), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:28 (eleven years ago) link

at the risk of acting like typical record collector scum, I'm a little bummed that I missed out on the colored vinyl for the last Dignan Porch LP; I'd managed to get every alternate pressing they'd put out going back to the Wild Nothing/Beach Fossils releases back in 2010 until this one. they must have only gotten like five copies, though - I literally placed my order 5 minutes after they were announced as being on sale on FB. oh well.

in news about actual music, I really really really like the new Wild Nothing. a couple of my friends who were all into the pining, lovelorn sound of the first one aren't as hot on it, but I just can't turn down songs as good as the ones on that record.

With enduring faith, W. Cunt. (jamescobo), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

got the new wild nothing in the mail, the sleeve is absolutely beautiful (and the letterpress outer is lovely too). might even listen to it one day.

You got the limited copy? Was debating that but it's like $10 higher. Will probably appreciate pretty well though.

Evan, Friday, 31 August 2012 05:32 (eleven years ago) link

it's a really nice looking package - i felt the diiv one was not worth the extra $$ but this one is

beautifully in with its outness (electricsound), Friday, 31 August 2012 05:33 (eleven years ago) link

Well damn and it already fetched $60 on ebay. Should have pre-ordered it. I got a regular copy but now I'm going to keep wishing I had the color vinyl for no good reason.

Evan, Friday, 31 August 2012 05:37 (eleven years ago) link

haha. at one point i thought i would collect all the limited CT releases but i couldn't face paying a premium for the heavenly beat record

beautifully in with its outness (electricsound), Friday, 31 August 2012 05:39 (eleven years ago) link

snapped one up at amoeba records yesterday and they still have some in their online store, might want to give that a go.

omar little, Friday, 31 August 2012 05:55 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks, but hindsight over limited vinyl pass ups is me at my ugliest with materialism. Got to get over that! What's saddest of all my record collection only really impresses myself.

Evan, Friday, 31 August 2012 05:59 (eleven years ago) link

what's the verdict on the Heavenly Beat album? I really like "Tradition" but after one listen it seems the rest of the LP is just variations with diminishing returns. But man does he nail that 1992 synthy sound.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 6 September 2012 09:31 (eleven years ago) link

it's.. ok. i enjoy the tracks when they turn up in shuffle, and it's always nice when a band has some durutti influence, but it's a tough listen straight through because it's so samey

i'm really amped for the Chris Cohen record. i love both of the singles so far.

wow, the dignan porch lp is a huge step forward from their earlier stuff. really good. and i'm digging the chris cohen record a lot too

the naomi punk album on the other hand sounds like shitty grunge demos of one song they never quite remember how to play the same way each time

linalooool (electricsound), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 03:11 (eleven years ago) link

the Chris Cohen record is INCREDIBLY good. can't recommend it enough.

"the naomi punk album on the other hand sounds like shitty grunge demos of one song they never quite remember how to play the same way each time"
lol. yeah i'm not entirely sure how i feel about it right now. i feel the Pacific Northwest vibe, but i'm not sure if it's anything really remarkable.
that said, the new Chris Cohen and Mac DeMarco have made this a pretty great fall for this label in my opinion.

ripersnifle, Friday, 12 October 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

so i should get that chris cohen record? cobo you got that shit on colored vinyl to sell?

Lamp, Friday, 12 October 2012 18:24 (eleven years ago) link

cw, Friday, 12 October 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

i like the chris cohen album, at first i was like "huh this just sounds exactly like microphones" then i was listening to it every day

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 12 October 2012 21:31 (eleven years ago) link

it reminds me a lot of Emitt Rhodes' first couple of albums - less Beatles-y but same level of homespun songcraft. there's seriously not a bad moment on it. legit one of my very favorite albums of 2012.

With enduring faith, W. Cunt. (jamescobo), Friday, 12 October 2012 23:45 (eleven years ago) link

Judging by the DIIV performances on Pitchfork right now they're awful live and I'll avoid that and just stick with the record.

About fnunning time!

BTW the Blissed Out Fatalists record on the new CT sublabel Body Double? Great. Like early J&MC and the Fall and some American noise rock style.

Looking forward for this as well. Look Blue Go Purple better be on the reissue list.

van smack, Saturday, 5 January 2013 04:38 (eleven years ago) link

Isn't Flying Nun already reissuing much of their older titles already? Either way I am excited to see the results of this.

Evan, Saturday, 5 January 2013 06:38 (eleven years ago) link

FN are shit at reissuing their own stuff as far as i'm concerned

Widowspeak's 2013 album Almanac hasn't been discussed on ILM yet. My first impressions are that its a big jump in production clarity, and a lesser step in songcraft, up from the debut.

Worth checking out for fans of Beach House, Speck Mountain, Trespassers William etc.

Kind of surprised there hasn't been more talk about that one, actually. Listening to it again right now and it's definitely one of the year's early stand-outs for me. They manage to take a pretty simple formula but vary it up enough to keep things really interesting. The real star, for me, is Robert Earl Thomas and his guitar lines. Just love the way they slink into so many of these songs and steal them away. My only, relatively minor, complaint is the way they stick a little too close to the Almanac theme with the lyrics, sometimes this turns into a game of "spot the folk adage!".

the singles from the upcoming lps (minks, holograms, medicine) are encouragingly good. the soft metals single is a major disappointment though, it's like they've gone backwards. also they *really* need to be paired with a sympathetic producer
