Any go-to places for tickets for big shows that do not charge Ticketmaster-size fees?

Man, in LA, that's like asking "hey, has anyone seen the Holy Grail?

downtown Artwalk devolving into a cops vs Occupy L.A. near-riot right now at 5th and Spring, with Occupy deciding to step in after past Artwalks where people were busted for writing on the sidewalks in chalk. Which is stupid but this feels like an RIP artwalk event.

i'm stuck in my office building, everything is happening right out the front door.

omar little, Friday, 13 July 2012 06:22 (eleven years ago) link

occupy l.a. needs to reassess its priorities w/r/t what it wastes time protesting.

they're doing pushups in front of the cops

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 13 July 2012 06:30 (eleven years ago) link

btw I was driving on like the 10W around like 4:45, and traffic on the 10E was stopped because 3 cup cars had blocked traffic. about 30 ft in front of the cop cars was an unmarked white van that was stopped. The cop cars had their doors open and like 5-6 cops were standing behind the doors like a barricade, all of them w/ their gun drawn, it was a p crazy thing for me to pass, I've seen some police shit but like, never a line of cops w/ guns out

my decidedly less exciting going-out-in-LA report tonight: there was an electrical outage near the crazy five-way intersection at sunset/hollywood/hillhurst/virgil earlier. i was gonna meet up with friends at el chavo but the power was out and they were only serving beer and shots because the freezer wasn't working (so no ice). power's back on now but the intersection's traffic lights are still just blinking red so it's a bit of a free-for-all around there atm

i can't believe those Occupy dorks protested over chalk. They make it tough to take them seriously.

if you're anywhere near sherman oaks, freakbeat records is having a sale.

Hey, we're nine years old! It's hard to believe and we couldn't have done it without the support of all our great customers. As is tradition, we'll be having a huge anniversary sale beginning this Thursday, July 12th at 11am, and ending on Monday, July 16th at 8pm. Everything in the store, new and used, will be 20% to 50% off. Additionally, we will have a roomful of LPs, CDs and DVDs for just a quarter each. We hope to see you all here. Thanks again for all your support!

they convinced me -- literally at the last minute -- to get the can lost tapes set i'd been carrying around.

Did I link this already? I guess it's the less shitty side of gentrification, even though there is something a little smug about it. It looks cool though:

Damn, I missed a Mark Burgess solo set? I need to pay more attention here. (Caught him a number of times that way over the years, always been good.)

moesha my reflection (donna rouge), Monday, 23 July 2012 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

haha yes, I thought that was funny. Mark Burgess! In my neighborhood! Though I guess he has lived in LA for some time? Maybe even as long as Pot Noodle Goth Peter Baynham

has anyone been to little cave, the bar a few doors down? those cocktails look yum

moesha my reflection (donna rouge), Monday, 23 July 2012 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I been there many times. It's nice. Mr T's is there too, though I don't know if it is still open?

My current favorite NELA bar is the bar at Colombo's in Eagle Rock. Hardly anyone there under 50 besides me. Definitely my kind of place.

I like the Black Boar in Eagle Rock a lot. The DJ there every other Saturday is one of the best in town.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 23 July 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

i have never gone drinking in eagle rock but i went to the oinkster and all-star lanes last weekend!

moesha my reflection (donna rouge), Monday, 23 July 2012 20:33 (eleven years ago) link

Not a fan of the Black Boar. It was much nicer (and far, far quieter) when it was The Chalet. Oinkster also used to be much better before they put the flatscreens in. All-Star Lanes is great though.

La Cuevita (formerly the Little Cave) has a pretty decent mezcal selection and their happy hour is 7-10 7 days a week. The Hermosillo club is pretty decent (beer & wine only).

Jean-Luc Poncey (lpz), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:18 (eleven years ago) link

Haha, my friend and I stood staring through the open window of Hermosillo for a few minutes debating whether to go in, the bartender staring hopelessly back at us from an empty room (it may have been "opening night" after the redesign), before deciding against it and walking off. I'm sure it's lovely though.

oinkster is opening a second location in hollywood, on vine near melrose. i wonder how the crowds will be.

zero of the signified got a tip from a friend about a great lebanese place in sun valley called jalal lebnan. we went tonight and said friend's recommendation checks out -- great shawarma, decent hummus, some nicely executed falafel that the owner threw in on the house. we were the only people in there on a saturday night, so you should go! they need customers!

(i know most of you live nowhere near sun valley. just sayin'.)

Team GB (get bent), Sunday, 5 August 2012 02:53 (eleven years ago) link

sorry, it's called jabal lebnan, with a b.

Have you been to Mantee in Studio City, and if so how does it compare? I like Mantee, but likely not as cheap as your find.

no, but i know about it. i'd like to go sometime. it's across from my ralph's! jonathan gold said the salads were very good.

i have a food writer pal in town and at the behest of a local food enthusiast she knows we went on an insane taco crawl today:

mariscos jalisco truck in boyle heights (best shrimp taco i've ever had)
mercado olympic (we had a bunch of things here - tacos en canasta, lamb tacos, some samples of pulque and techape, squash blossom enchiladas, this dish that's basically a bunch of different fruits and chile mangos and pork skin served in a bowl with chile powder over everything, pork rinds, horchata)
ricky's fish tacos (fish taco and jamaica)
guelaguetza in koreatown (mole sampler, chilaquiles, and i had a shot of del maguey vida)
