I have some spare time at the moment, so do you think it'd be okay if I already started the nominations thread for the 90s electronic tracks poll? Obviously I won't start the actual poll thread until after this one is over.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 10:06 (eleven years ago) link

why not?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 13:28 (eleven years ago) link

Okay, if no one's against it, I'll start the nomination thread soon.

Why do the claim Tangerine Dream's Phaedra came out in 1967, when it was released in 1974?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 07:35 (eleven years ago) link

they don't

somebody want to do this for me, i'm up to my neck in family / work / life bullshit IRL

the late great, Saturday, 7 July 2012 09:22 (eleven years ago) link

I'll do it for you if nobody else wants to, but I'd rather let someone else do it - let's give it 24 hours to see if anyone volunteers

Özil Gummidge (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 7 July 2012 12:19 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I can do it, depending on what "it" is. Starting a thread for/rolling out results is no problem.

EDB, Saturday, 7 July 2012 14:02 (eleven years ago) link

do it!

late great, why don't you just pass the data to someone who's willing to calculate?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 13 July 2012 00:34 (eleven years ago) link

I wanna know!

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Friday, 13 July 2012 00:43 (eleven years ago) link

i would be happy to but afaict nobody wants to calculate

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 00:48 (eleven years ago) link

i floated the idea upthread but got no webmails

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 00:48 (eleven years ago) link

I'll do it but I've never done it before and am not entirely sure what it entails.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Friday, 13 July 2012 00:55 (eleven years ago) link

hi everyone

i had about half the votes put into a spreadsheet when excel crashed and i haven't had any luck recovering my work

one of the things that's making this so tedious and time-consuming is that i got the ballots in many different formats and reconciling them into a spreadsheet is taking a long-ass time

it would be much easier if the emails were all delimited in the same ways. apparently excel has extremely limited capabilities in converting delimited text to spreadsheet

any ideas?

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 05:57 (eleven years ago) link

short of asking everyone to enter their ballots into a google spreadsheet themselves, which i haven't ruled out ...

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 05:58 (eleven years ago) link

for my paul simon poll i just put everything into notepad and from there into excel where i had the formulas already input e.g. 1st = x points and the calculations for average placement &c &c so the only stuff i had to do by hand were the # of first place votes... i think i had to clean up a couple of ballots first but it was p easy

for the spec fic poll i had an access database set up but i still had to reformat some stuff by hand before i could sort and calculate

Lamp, Friday, 13 July 2012 06:20 (eleven years ago) link

I'd suggest copying all the text to a text file, find and replace '-' with ',' and then saving that as a csv file.

When you open it in Excel the ',' will force cell divisions between each comma.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 13 July 2012 06:35 (eleven years ago) link

the problem is that half the people didn't follow that format, i have a lot of supposedly tab-delimited stuff that's actually not

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 07:54 (eleven years ago) link

will using csv strip out the extra spaces in people's emails?

another problem i'm having is with inconsistent spacing

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 07:55 (eleven years ago) link

If it's a question of just reformatting ballots in word and sending them back i can definitely do that

EDB, Friday, 13 July 2012 09:40 (eleven years ago) link

In a text document you can find and replace double spaces with single spaces.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 13 July 2012 11:33 (eleven years ago) link

Don't use word to format.

txt to csv then excel once the formatting's done.

du mein bestie (micarl), Friday, 13 July 2012 11:34 (eleven years ago) link

using textedit, it's really just a lack of consistency

the late great, Friday, 13 July 2012 11:38 (eleven years ago) link

let's just forget about it, it was a shit idea in the first place.

ftr i wasn't being entirely serious here but i'm glad we've got some dialogue going :)

i would be happy to but afaict nobody wants to calculate

I would LOVE to calculate, are you kidding?

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Friday, 13 July 2012 13:06 (eleven years ago) link

(But it sounds like there's stuff happening...)

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Friday, 13 July 2012 13:07 (eleven years ago) link

I've already said I'm happy to do it if nobody else wants to, but I'm happy to let someone else do it - it sounds like jaymc is that man.

Özil Gummidge (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 13 July 2012 13:24 (eleven years ago) link

so, somehow i only just noticed this thread now...

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 13 July 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

... so if i could submit an incredibly late ballot, I'm not really clear on the ideal formatting for it.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 13 July 2012 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

I'm only getting 100 of the tracks on the Spotify play list Any help?

broom air, Friday, 13 July 2012 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

You can do what I did. Make an excel list with all of the songs by alphabetical order and then start filling up the next column with numbers. So say if someone voted for 'song a' you put a 1 next to it and if in the next ballot someone voted for that one again you change it for a 2, and so on. It's a tedious process but that's the problem of not submitting through some sort of program first. (I cant remember who on ILM makes the polls that run through a webpage first that sorts results automatically).

Anyhoo you can do that and I'm willing to help you count the numbers, or you can ask everyone to resubmit their ballots in whichever format you need.
