not impressed by EC12 (bought at good spirit co) (who stock three van winkles iirc)

That £30 ( as with all quoted uk prices) includes tax. Which your US figures might too, but I can never tell.

Tim, Saturday, 23 June 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

Nah, ours are usually pretax

I like EC12. It doesn't have a lot of character, but like Woodford it's pretty smooth and mixes well. Also, it's got a cool giant cork.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 June 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

Fudge. That didn't work.

almond floor cleaner for a chaser, huh?

mh, Monday, 25 June 2012 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

It's a vital component of a cocktail I like the call the Gut Cleaner. Needless to say, after the Gut Cleaner, you'll need the Squirt and Mop for the floor. It's all quite symbiotic.

two months pass...

just picked up my ardbeg galileo - in two minds about opening it, since it's already running about £100 on ebay

skrill xx (cozen), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

Per CAD's recommendation, I picked up a bottle of Four Roses OESQ a few months back. I thought it was a little too hot for my tastes, and didn't really like the flowery flavor undertones. But I'm going to bust it out again when the cold months come and try it again.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

curious how the galileo is, if you decide to drink it. i passed on a bottle when they were available here.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Thursday, 6 September 2012 05:18 (eleven years ago) link

Nikka From The Barrel is very good. Think it is quite a cheap brand in Japan but the quality is great.

I got a bottle of Powers irish whiskey a week ago and have been undermining my health with it all week. Nearly finished now. Sneezing too much and tired, but generally pleased with life.

Aimless, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 02:52 (eleven years ago) link

How much/often do you have to drink to undermine health? I accidentally took down a bottle of wild turkey over four days, and that included a Saturday where I went out and had drinks elsewhere

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:02 (eleven years ago) link

well a bottle of liquor is 12 or so 2 oz. pours so threeish drinks a night i.e.you're drinking less than me

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:08 (eleven years ago) link

ftr i am a picture of health

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:09 (eleven years ago) link

I'm older than the hills, or at least nearing 60, so my constitution isn't as resilient as all you spring chickens. btw, the first third of the bottle disappeared on the first night. i slowed down after that.

Aimless, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

it was turkey 101?

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:28 (eleven years ago) link

mh the serious answer is that four nights of heavier-than-average drinking aren't going to put a dent in you; if you feel like shit that's your message to not do that again.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:29 (eleven years ago) link

it fucking better have been 101 or you have no business on this thread

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:30 (eleven years ago) link

nah it felt fine, I guess the question is whether those four days are four of every week!

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 03:31 (eleven years ago) link

i mean it's not *great* for you long term but my attitude is if you can wake up not hungover, enjoy your day, and get some exercise you're probably doing alright.

i want to talk about canadian whiskey

picked up a bottle of alberta premium dark horse, competing crown royal black? prem market entry from provincial institution/100% rye crew at ab premium. bottled at 45% with a boost from corn whiskey + sherry. herbal, rubbery, a twang like diet coke from a can, rye spice-sour. i've been trying to get my hands on a bottle of ab premium 30 yr and i think it might be impossible.

century reserve 21 year, another provincial institution, highwood from high river alberta, from their inherited stash of corn liquor i guess. this is i believe 100% corn and it's woody as fuck, tree bark and match heads and vanilla. also been drinking their white owl spiced which is kind of novelty, aged 10 year rye whiskey + filtered to remove all colour + over ice smells like butterscotch ripple and tastes like cinnamon hearts and brown bread.

also daily black velvet from plastic and crown limited edition.

i had my eye on a bottle of this tonight just because look at it

Oooh, I've always wondered about those whiskeys. I like AB Premium a lot but typically I stick with CC 20 yr.

Anyone had that Redbreast 12 cask strength? I'm curious.

How much/often do you have to drink to undermine health?

Per health, you should worry less about your liver (at first) and more about the calories. A shot of whiskey can be about 100 calories, I think, so a bottle of Wild Turkey would run about ... 1700 calories? Which is 2 and a half Big Macs? So obviously not healthy to make a habit of it, so to speak.

A lot of cocktails hit around 250-500 calories per drink, easily.

otm

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:24 (eleven years ago) link

the answer is to pound that bottle of wild turkey while scarfing down on two and a half big macs

Question: my dad told me that he stopped drinking Manhattans when they "started to go down too easy." I've always liked that way of explaining it, but I didn't know if it had an origin?

i will fondue, and i will killue (darraghmac), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:41 (eleven years ago) link

aimless- power's is a good example of what i'd consider a pure 'irish' whiskey in terms of taste. Test is simple, make a hot whiskey and if the aftertaste doesn't clash with clove, sugar or lemon you're close imo.

Powers/paddy's will always be the basic standard here btw, though you can get alternatives if you want to spend more.

as I said to a coworker who said he switched to whiskey for the winter instead of beer since he was less active:
"nonsense, a pint of whiskey surely has more calories than a pint of beer!"

I would still drink whiskey over beer though since no carbs in whiskey.
