Looove the idea of a SP3 and related poll... And I'd like to do an Iron Maiden one at some point down the line.

I'd been tempted to throw together a Stone Roses micropoll to celebrate their comeback gigs - but I hadn't realised they were only next weekend. Their discography is tiny though, and clemenza's deadline is quite far ahead, so it might just work.

Even though I'm quite nervous about my upcoming Cure poll and I've done no prep work for it at all - can I do a Radiohead poll?

nate woolls, Saturday, 23 June 2012 06:34 (eleven years ago) link

Any enthusiasm for a quickfire Stone Roses poll, or is this a silly idea? I'm thinking voting 'til Thursday, then a very short countdown on Friday before the big gig.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 23 June 2012 10:38 (eleven years ago) link

can I do a Radiohead poll?

I say 'yes'. I think I was down to do one, then let someone else take it over, and then they switched to another group/artist altogether and I ended up about twenty places further down the list with a PJ Harvey one.

Any enthusiasm for a quickfire Stone Roses poll, or is this a silly idea?

I'll vote if you do it. You might want to restrict people to just voting for their top 10 if you want people to vote without much thinking time.

Nessun Biscotto (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 23 June 2012 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

ballot poll seems a bit much for a band w/ 2 albums, wouldn't an automated poll thread work better?

some dude, Saturday, 23 June 2012 12:53 (eleven years ago) link

I can't help feeling we've had this discussion before

yeah guys w/ two albums getting a ballot poll is p silly. lets have nominations! oh look we nominated everything! lets have 20 vote ballots! oh you all voted for everything! fun!

Smothered, Covered and Chunked!!! (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 23 June 2012 13:48 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not planning on clogging up people's time with this. It'd be seven-vote ballots, and the rundown would be a top ten only.

I'm curious to see how the ultrashort format plays, and it's just a throwaway for a special occasion anyway. If it doesn't work it doesn't work, no big deal.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 23 June 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

are we still doing the overlapping method? this seems to be taking even more forever than i thought it would

k3vin k., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:25 (eleven years ago) link

should be a countdown every week imo.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:26 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, or every other week at least. People complain often about laboring over ballots (I've done it too), but in the end it's pretty easy to sit down and knock one out in less than an hour while listening to the artist's tracks. The thing I liked about these polls in the beginning was how off-the-cuff and fun they were. Now, everyone treats them like homework.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:30 (eleven years ago) link

I agree with that 100%. I understand that for some voters, these are a springboard to explore someone's entire catalog. Detached from everything else, that's a good thing. But to me, you don't need a poll for that--that can be done any time you want. For these polls, just make a list of whatever your favourites are already. Knock it off quickly. If you want to YouTube a a handful of old favourites you haven't heard in a while, great. If you can only make it to 10 songs, send in a list of 10. If the poll turns up a song you'd never before heard and absolutely would have voted for if you had, that's a good thing. You haven't let anyone down--least of all the Rolling Stones or Abba or James Brown.

clemenza, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, a lot of heavy discog research/listening makes it awfully close to work. It would be good when the results thread for an artist gets going, for the voting for the next poll to start. TBH, the Bee Gees poll with 2 pushed-back deadlines threw a wrench into everything, no offense intended toward Bee Gees fans. Clarke's house-moving was an unforeseen circumstance...but I think (hope) we can get going faster now.

Biff Wellington (WmC), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

after the pause in artist polls because of the board being down/year-end polls/the James Brown snafu/etc., we've had results for 10 different polls run in the space of a little over 4 months. i think every 2 weeks or so is a pretty good rate but i realize there are people who will just DIE if we don't run an Autechre poll in the next 12 months.

some dude, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 00:07 (eleven years ago) link

Ahem.

Moves Like Zappa (Leee), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 01:05 (eleven years ago) link

for some voters, these are a springboard to explore someone's entire catalog

See, I love this. I'll throw out a ballot in no time if I know the catalogue - I did Zep in twenty minutes while walking round the shops - but for a major artist I don't really know, exploring a catalogue I never otherwise would is totally what I get out of it. It's all about the discussion thread too, outside the top tens I don't much care about results.

We need a poll for the worst late 80s / early 90s graduation songs.
Nominees:

"Right Here, Right Now" Jesus Jones
"End of the Road" Boyz II Men
"These Are Days" 10,000 Maniacs
"It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" Boyz II Men

Any others?

Is a Clarke B. lurking around here anywhere?

Neil Jung (WmC), Friday, 6 July 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

I'd still like to have a go at testing out a shortform poll btw, in case Clarke doesn't show and there's a gap needs filled. Not The Stone Roses though, their star has shone. I was thinking maybe Sophistipop.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 9 July 2012 12:40 (eleven years ago) link

to nate woolls
, i hope you go BIG with the Cure poll. meaning i hope we can pick more than 20 songs. they have such a huge catalog that i know i could easily do a Top 50 and still hate that i would have to leave off some of my favorites. plus being ILM, where there are a bunch of Cure heads, this poll is going to be classic, at least i hope...

Bee OK, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 04:06 (eleven years ago) link

When is The Cure poll likely to be? I fear I may be on holiday. (not enough to cancel the holiday)

Özil Gummidge (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

I'd guess early August. If Nate Woolls has voting details in mind -- like if he knows it's going to be the standard 20-spot -- no reason he couldn't post that here and you could vote early. (For that matter, I know Ween is going to be a standard 20, so anyone can vote now if they're planning on taking a year off from ILX.)

Neil Jung (WmC), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

I think 50 songs may be slightly too many but 20 is definitely too few, so I'm going to make an executive decision and say 40 songs. So go ahead and make your lists, I need to start doing some prep work.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 21:01 (eleven years ago) link

Ha! I've been stuck on 21 songs for the last 3 weeks for the Cure poll since I decided to get my shit together early for a change. That'll learn me!

gonna bite the bullet and say put me down to run XTC and P-Funk polls. I don't expect more than a dozen votes for either tbh but we'll see...

Would there be interest in a Low one if I did it? 9 albums proper, a pile of eps - that's enough of a career I think.

Haven't heard that stuff myself--I love a bunch of Dump songs--but yes, I like polls that include anything tangentially related.
