I used to be the #1 hater of positions like this i.e. if I have to see you live to like your records then your records suck but time has mellowed me on this q. Still, it's fair to judge recorded output on its own merits whether you've seen the act live or not I think
― decrepit but free (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 17 June 2012 17:31 (eleven years ago) link
I thought he doesn't "spin" anything but just does live recreations of his songs, including ramp up/slow breakdowns, creating song-length ups and downs rather than maintaining energy for multiple songs? idk, that is just what I got from earlier live reviews
I'm cool with that, and I'm sure it is a good live show, but that is pretty much completely different from most live dance acts
― mh, Sunday, 17 June 2012 17:39 (eleven years ago) link
also it's different for skrillex because his recorded material is like 2% of the reason why he's risen to fame
― lamborghini persie (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 17 June 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link
Is that really for-real true? Like, are you saying that a v. high % of the people who've made him famous are people who've seen him live - does he tour constantly and widely? I don't doubt that his live act is a big part of how he came up (that's true of acts reaching back a long ways) but "the recorded output barely matters at all" is a pretty intense thing to say imo

I finally checked out some more of the recordings and I had underestimated the plunderphonic aspect. If Girl Talk is brazen about borrowing, and doesn't do much of any transformation of his material, a lot of this guy's stuff is playing with that space between original production and sampling. The word most people would use is 'remix' except they're all mostly unauthorized remixes. What this means is that most of his strongest, most effective tracks are commercially unreleasable; he only plays them live.
I'm going on excerpts from youtubes; I'm interested in finding myself a good mp3 of a straight through live set.

Fwiw I dont listen to his music as songs at home, I think theyre kind of like video game music or something. Kind of entertaining in a soundtrack way but not rlly interesting
He uses the common denominator of dubstep-- the drop but also the grinding robot intercourse textures-- to play with a wide variety of rhythmic components, shifting from dub reggae to juke to hip hop to regular house, balancing emotional moments with textured grinding moments that are like the common ground of acid and guitar crunch. The hip hop influence has definitely been understated, the entire stadium was doing more rap arm chopping than raver hands
Plunderphonics thing is a good point too
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 17 June 2012 21:15 (eleven years ago) link
Like, it takes that mid nineties ALL GENRE frankendance but instead of being vibeless cacophony he gives it coherence under the dubstep banner. The live show is what its all about... Hes not mixing records but hes definitely a dj
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 17 June 2012 21:17 (eleven years ago) link
I meant mid 00s not mid 90s
The hip hop influence has definitely been understated, the entire stadium was doing more rap arm chopping than raver hands
I almost came back to make this point: the song arrangement and, from what I've heard, concert presence are much more reminiscent of the energy and build-up of that spectrum. I don't think there are going to be any cross-song 15 minute build-ups at a skrillex show. More drops, more head bobbing, more chopping hands for sure.

I just saw Skrillex live at Bumbershoot. I went to Bumbershoot for the comedy, but this show was happening at the end, so I figured why not?
Have you guys ever watched a movie that surprised you on how good it was, walking right out of the theater? That's what this show was: a pretty stunning production all 'round with some positively memorable scenes. However, you start to immediately think of a couple of flaws walking to the subway station or bus stop or after hours bar or car or sonething. Then you get home, and you realize even more things that were pretty lame about what you just saw as you go to bed. Then more flaws hatch out day by day. About a month later, you want to kick in your own teeth for wasting your time on having seen such a thing. Then you kinda mentally deny you experienced it i.e. you're not even sure you saw anything at all, but you totally remember you went.
This is the mental pattern I'm already detecting with this Skrillex show. :-/
At least the "EW SKRILLEX KOOTIES" people only hatch out the negativity in short bursts.
That said, Skrillex should stick to goth-mane whips, and stay off the mic. Wow. Least inspiring crowd-hyper ever. That Skrillhouse pic is totally accurate re his voice.

I finally succumbed to Bangarang a couple of months ago. Just ramping the tempo up helps. Like if he was prepared to commit fully to this direction and forget about all the other lopey shit I would be 100% on board with that.

I mean we should all be concerned about crossing the rubicon that blurs brostep and frankenhouse that probably happened ages ago, and couldn't be worse than actual brostep anyway.
