This would probably fit equally well in the goths thread, but since I started this one I'll put it here:

four weeks pass...

diiv album quite a bit better than expected, based on the not-as-good-as-beach-fossils singles

no bongs tomorrow (electricsound), Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

Totally adore Orca Team, had the pleasure of putting on their first UK show and they were extremely good. They combine their influences supremely and Leif has a fantastic voice too.

I don't like the name, though on Friday I saw Haiku Salut who I'd avoided because I thought their name made them sound like some sort of 'Allo Darlin ukulele fest, but it turns out they're actually great. I feel pretty foolish.

Haiku Salut are lovely. I still have a soft spot for their previous band The Deirdres who I know were way over the twee line for a lot of people. Seeing Haiku Salut on Thursday, have only previously seen them through a church window at Indietracks, looking forward to it hugely.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Monday, 23 July 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh, the Dierdres were awful. But yeah, HS seem a lot better. Still holding out for being able to watch a full gig inside the venue before I make up my mind properly...

emil.y, Monday, 23 July 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

Or, uh, Deirdres.

emil.y, Monday, 23 July 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

I had no idea they were the Deirdres, no wonder my twee-senses were tingling.

I'm really liking the new Lorn album, 'Ask The Dust'

laid back late night ambient, a little dark in places, a lot smoother than the first one, which I also liked.

HELP, trying to pin down an indie song I heard on local radio saturday morning. kind of highlife/jonny marr-esque guitar riff, chorus is something like "dont try something unless youre careful" (at least thats what it sounds like). im thinking its a well known indie act (thought it was two door cinema club but tis not) as the local station wouldnt play anything too obscure.

can't get enough of the asteroid #4/peter daltrey album. gonna be top 3 for the year for sure

stagnant pools album is pretty good slackery shoegaze, picked it up on a whim and was pleasantly surprised

i like this swearin' record, don't know whether it goes here or in the 'underground' thread.

by the sea's "dream waters" single is utterly beautiful, it's like a lost john head classic

fuckmeat zydeco (electricsound), Monday, 24 September 2012 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

By The Sea are a treat to watch play as well, btw - there are rather a lot of them and they seem to have one guitarist whose job it is just to go "ding!" every now and again.

Tim, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 07:57 (eleven years ago) link

the new Chris Cohen record, though not making anything new, is very nice and pleasant

Haven't heard the album yet, but this is sorta perfect.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 30 September 2012 13:52 (eleven years ago) link

The Sweater Girls album is some kind of indiepop perfection! Was just coming here to post to that effect as well. Great to fall in love with a band from the first two 7"s then find the album's better than you hoped for.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 30 September 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

Actually yeah, I wasn't entirely sure about them from the singles but on first listen the album is really really good.

emil.y, Sunday, 30 September 2012 17:55 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i dug the 45s but they've cleaned up REALLY well

adam bandit (electricsound), Sunday, 30 September 2012 23:19 (eleven years ago) link

Outside World tape on night-people is squarely hitting all the right early 90s indie buttons. ace.

Minus the video, that doesn't sound very retro at all. Very Englishy Vampire Weekend imo.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 11 October 2012 15:07 (eleven years ago) link

That is one hell of an ugly band.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 12 October 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

Side 2 of the Sweater Girls LP is amazing!

Liking this Cold Pumas album, good and krauty but in quite a spiky sort of way

veronica falls still sound like veronica falls (tho somewhat cheerier), fine by me.

fun facts about human waste (Merdeyeux), Monday, 12 November 2012 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

can't get enough of the new people's temple LP at the moment. it sits somewhere between back from the grave and early flying nun. if that even begins to make sense.

site nuances (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:32 (eleven years ago) link

The Melodys Echo Chamber album is cracking, like a fuzzier, more rocking Broadcast.

Dunno if this is the right place for this, but it's quite lovely.

Windsor Davies, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 19:04 (eleven years ago) link

There's no Cloud Nothings thread, so I guess I'll post this here: I think Attack on Memory might be my album of the year pick, and I'm trying to come to terms with that since it seems silly to to throw my vote to this inconsequential little faux-punk album in a year that had so many big, important, great albums. But if I'm honest with myself, I listened to Attack on Memory more than any of them, and that might have to be the bar

HOOKS FOR DAYS. I hate everything about this band but the hooks. The hooks are enough.

alpine static, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

granted, Cheap Beer is not their hookiest song

i dunno, man, they just have it, if you ask me

by the sea album meets expectations
