thread started about the reality show where gamers competed and one lady got screamed at about being a fat ugly slut?

There was this thread, which mentioned the incident I think forks is referring to (or maybe not - the live-streamed fighting game competition where a female competitor took a whole lot of very ugly trash-talking):

Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

yup, that's the one.

If Ron Gilbert did a fundraiser for making his version of Monkey Island 3 i would totally kick in $$$. The real one was such a letdown after 2.

i see no problem with this - there are several long-running webcomics that survived this way long before kickstarter. good luck to them. (it's just kinda weird that they're doing this after publishing a load of books)

Nhex, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 04:06 (eleven years ago) link

They come across as dicks in the pitch video. And the items in the pitch are backwards - does anyone care about the advertising on their website? It isn't the intrusive screen filling pop-up blare-y video kind. As I understand it, the real core of this idea is that if they get enough money, they'll be able to turn down corporate commissions and have more time to make additional comics for their website.
It's an experiment really. And they're probably the only webcomic that could do this without a lot of risk - if they don't get the funding they'll carry on as before, if they get funded for a first year but not a second, they'll go back to the model they use now.

All of the Penny Arcade "joke" gifts are seriously unfunny. It's just like "AHAHAHAHA HE'LL CHASE A DUCK! A DUCK! MY WHAT AN ABSURD NOTION". And I'm having to give them the benefit of the doubt that the "we'll follow you on twitter for a year for $500" is also a joke, because if not... Jesus, man.

emil.y, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

The joke gifts are a reference to this comic.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/5/23/
Not that that makes them any less unfunny.

As much as I dislike the Penny Arcade guys, I dislike snarky attention seeking tossers even more.

i backed the OUYA as well. cool idea.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

I hate Penny Arcade but if nerds want to throw their money away to help make a website they enjoy less visually cluttered, it's fine by me.

jesus christ almost three million in two days huh?
yeah, i'll buy one too. I think OUYA needs its own thread

The only kickstarter that should happen is Ron Gilbert making his version of Monkey Island 3.

Oh well, I guess I am on this hype train. Pledged for the box + 2 controllers.

Nhex, Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

that said i don't see much point in paying for this now, as they're planning to retail it at $99, no?

Nhex, Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

looks like Divekick's gonna make its fund tho. i get it though, Keits is a likeable dude

Nhex, Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

xp yeah - i'm going to wait and see what kind of games they get on this thing. certainly not going to sign up for the chance to play minecraft on a 7th platform

Mordy, Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

Funding hasn't started for this one yet, but I need to remember to keep my eye on it. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/07/06/mulling-mode-7-mans-management-centric-maia/

Though we cannot honor game pre-orders or mail out T-shirts without taking money in, we do want each of the 800+ of you willing to back our game to be able to have some ownership in it.

...

Pledge Level 1 - $10 – Though we cannot honor a pre-order, we would like to thank you all by letting you suggest a “Tip From Uncle Sensei” for our loading screen.

Pledge Level 2 - $25 – Because we are letting people who pledged $10 submit a Tip, we are going to let anyone who pledged $25 or more suggest up to 3 “Tips From Uncle Sensei”.

i have no idea what divekick is or what it's about, but i too would like to suggest a "tip from uncle sensei"

Divekick looks pretty hilarious, tbh. This is actually a pretty good outcome! The game comes out and nobody had to pledge any money.
