If I could imagine one jazz guitarist being successful in advertising and writing a cookbook, it'd be George Benson, but I'm guessing that's wrong.

There's some jazz guitar in Sunnyside this Wednesday, if you want to kill two birds with one stone and check out your new neighborhood.

Also, the other guitar player, Tosh, whose gig it is, has two little kids so you can ask him about facilities for children in the area.

Another victim of Frankenstorm Sandy: Jazz Guitar. Jack Wilkins' regular Tuesday night gig has been put on hold the past two weeks. Fingers crossed it will return soon.

Hurting, you neglected to conduct the requisite pre-poll poll to see how many people would actually vote and adjust the number of nominees accordingly.

Just watched the whole thing. Man.

***SPOILER ALERT***
You will see Chet Atkins cry and there is some chance you might do so as well.

Albee Thousand (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 31 December 2012 03:35 (4 months ago) Permalink

It can be a little hard to watch without feeling depressed about my own chops.

Yet another reason to cry.

OK, I just read One Long Tune: The Life and Music of Lenny Breau and it knocked me flat. Will report at length later.

The whole story unfolds like some kind of Michael Chabon/Cameron Crowe confection about The World's Greatest Guitarist, piling incident upon incident of, just when you thought there were no more left, another Guitar Player's Guitar Player or Guitar Player's Guitar Teacher stepping forward to say "I thought I knew something about the instrument but then Lenny came to town and stayed over to my house where we jammed all night and he showed me had mastered my style and in fact greatly improved upon it. Whenever he came through again he would stop over and show me some new stuff he was working on while I kept the tape rolling but I in the end couldn't really play it because my technique wasn't good enough." All this leading up to the dark Sunset Boulevard/Jim Thompson denouement. I exaggerate but not much.

Hey Ken I like the way this guy plays:

never seen him live but found him via searching other DC players I know

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Monday, 21 January 2013 04:50 (3 months ago) Permalink

Don't know from him, sorry. Only Washington guitar player I know is a Brazilian guy who moved up here full-time last year.

Hurting, just checked out the website of something called QJOG -the Queens Jazz OverGround, which is supposed to promote live jazz in Queens, and they had a woman listed there that I never heard of who studied with Ted and some other famous guitar players.

Stranded In the Jungle Groove (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 25 February 2013 02:28 (2 months ago) Permalink

There are actually two people on that list who studied with Ted, and one was my year

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Monday, 25 February 2013 02:52 (2 months ago) Permalink

Small world. Which I type whilst wondering if there is an emoticon for a certain kind of finding something a little surprising when really it is just a statistical likelihood that was bound to turn up sooner or later.
