Daddy had a stroke in the ER. We had a room here for two weeks but they would want to move him to other floors on short notice. My father was on hospice care so they sent us the hospital bed and oxygen. The other choices they gave us were palliative care or rehab. We had chaplains, nurses, and social workers visiting.

One-star review of a Chinese restaurant that has a Japanese name:

"What a disappointment. Got fooled by Japanese name. As soon as you walk in the door, a sign of today's special all written in Chinese. Should have checked Yelp first. Or walked out. Service very slow even though we came late for lunch. Ordered green tea. No taste and not hot. Chopsticks, another sign, not Japanese. Music is also Chinese. Well we ordered any way, too late if day to go somewhere else. I just still can't understand why you have to trick people like this with the name. Looks like they are going to try to do sushi, they have a sushi cooler but right now has fruit or something in it. Not fish.
Food came same time as soup. Mom ordered garlic beef not spicy. Came without garlic. I order Shicuan beef, it was ok, not the best. It took a while before server came to ask how we were doing. When we explained about the garlic, server took the plate, came back with a woman who just couldn't understand what was wrong. My food got cold explaining. Then finally offered to make new. Rice is also Chinese. Lots of it and dry. The server is very nice and well mannered guy. But I dont think we will be back.
I'd to explain my " pickiness" when it comes to Japanese food. My mother is Japanese, I'm half, born there. My husband is Japanese.
If are going to be serving Chinese or something other then what you lead the customers to believe, you are totally Fake! We cook Japanese food at home but it is nice to get out of cooking and have someone else cook it and serve with a smile.
If I want Chinese, I go to Chinese. If I want American , I go to eat American food. If I want African, same. I just don't get it. You might be able to fool some people , but eventually , the causes you are making will catch with you. I didn't even want to give this place an one star. Just as bad as the Edo down the street. Why people? Do you keep on getting fooled , if you pay cheap, you get what you pay for."

I ordered food to go this evening and they got my order wrong. Most of the people who work here don't speak much English. Clam tofu and mushroom tofu soup sound nothing alike. Say it with me, "claaaam", "mushroooom".

you are a fucking child:

pro:
generous w/side dishes
meals include onion pancake
free fruit to end the meal
delicious!!

con:
don't take away dirty plates
didn't refill our drinks the entire meal
they don't scoop the rice out for you like BCD

goole, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

this place is a magnet:

I think my review for this place is a little on the generous side. Sure, they sat my buddy and me rather quickly. But they stuck us into this tiny, offshoot, storage type room with a couple tables set up in it. Seriously? We felt so cut off from the restaurant and the world! And I swear, there's some slight racism going on because all the people sitting in that tiny room were the ones who definitely don't look Korean. Fail. Anyway...

goole, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 21:26 (eleven years ago) link

I had lunch there today, and checked the Yelp link my coworker sent afterwards. Was going to make a "I love Young Dong" joke to them but figured most wouldn't get it, and explaining would only make it worse.

X-post. They did refill our tea, and took away a few of the empty dishes. And who wants the rice scooped out? - they serve it in a hot stone bowl so it stays warm.

i asked manfriend: which would you prefer, bad service with good food, or vice versa? he said (after some thought): bad service + good food. well good. cuz that's exactly what we got at YD last night. taste has improved. the ban chan was tasty, as was the kalbi, and soon tofu. i even got a free sprite for checking in!

i think it's hilarious that despite every evidence that she is at a chinese restaurant, the reviewer persists in believing she is at a japanese restaurant and rates accordingly.

I DIED, Thursday, 7 June 2012 05:10 (eleven years ago) link

Said reviewer has given 3 negative reviews to Japanese places and no positive ones, and two 5* reviews to Chinese places and no other negatives. If this place didn't have a Japanese name they'd probably have got a great review.

(What is not Japanese about chopsticks? We don't have many Japanese restaurants here but they all have chopsticks - admittedly usually the wooden pull-apart chopsticks rather than the ones you get in Chinese restaurants, so maybe that's what the reviewer was complaining about, who knows)

Right, like it's two-thirds of the way through the meal and she's leaning over to her husband saying "Something's just not right here -- I'm starting to suspect that this place isn't actually Japanese!"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 7 June 2012 14:41 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, her other reviews are a goldmine!

"I didnt care for the sushi at all, didnt taste fresh to me. I also tried I think it was teriyaki steak, anyways,I had to stop eatting in the middle of it was making feel sick to my stomache. It looked like it could be a nice place for a date,I guess"

Apparently when I was single my idea of a "date restaurant" was totally wrong.

chinese restaurant with a japanese name seems like a detail from a michael chabon novel

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 7 June 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

thing is, were Yelp reviews always so awful? b/c i remember looking at the site a couple of years or so before this thread was started, and iirc the reviews were fairly informative and generally not too harsh unless there was something truly egregious about the service at a place or whatever

but looking at reviews lately, it seems like the bulk of them are unbelievably complainy and petty and only helpful or informative insofar as they let you know that the reviewer would be a terrible person to eat dinner with or to have to wait on

dell (del), Thursday, 7 June 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

someone should start yelp reviews reviews and all the reviews should be 'this person would be horrible to dine with'

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 June 2012 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

Mine would be "Her name made me think she was Chinese but after we had dinner together I realized she totally wasn't, what a scam"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 7 June 2012 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

i've been meaning to suggest same for a while! yelper.com

or maybe whine.com

or just a tumblr of good'uns. that seems to do the trick these days.

goole, Thursday, 7 June 2012 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

The thing is, the site does perform a public service, in that if you meet somebody and find out they use yelp, you can find out within like a minute or so if they have sane and useful opinions or are a horrible pain in the ass. Presumably you could also find this out by talking to them, but smartphones are so much faster anymore.
