"half-man" but the rhythm of it made it sound more like "man-half" or perhaps sound like nothing at all so it took a while to scan.

I think the thing w/ the Hound's PTSD scene is that it just happened too damn quickly for me. A little more rubbing our faces in the horror of the situation might have sold it a little better imo

Simon H., Tuesday, 29 May 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

that's what i mean about tv being a medium of rubbing people's facing in the seemingly obvious

this is what I thought, cool.

that was a kickass explosion, indeed. loved that beat when the Hound and Tyrion are looking at the carnage/screaming with horror, and then they cut to the Maester-y dude who gives a little chuckle

i got the fire reference clearly but I will agree that it was poorly handled in the filming. It didn't need a full on "HOW'D IT GET BURNED HOW'D IT GET BURNED" flashback but the scene was more shorthand than putting you inside the hound's head.

not to get too caught up in book vs movie but I have to say I'm really disappointed that they didn't develop the relationship between Hound/Sansa more. That moment with them last night read much more awkward and out of the blue than it should have.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

it was really short and also ages ago, and an aside in an episode that prob had tons of other stuff happening. it also didn't give any real sense of how damaged mentally he was, if at all.

not to say that they won't, but it just feels very patchy and hamhanded

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

I felt like they gave Hound and Sansa a lot of attention this season!

Yeah this was pretty much exactly my reaction as well.

I think there were a lot of close-ups of the Hound's worried face, but I didn't take it as seriously when he threatened to disembowel that captain of the archers if the flames got anywhere near him.

Sansa/Hound has been developed since last season. Thought they've done an excellent job with that one.

i'm baffled by the idea that anyone who's been following the show could miss the very obvious connect-the-dots between the hound's hideously burned face and his very obvious, clearly telegraphed fear of fire in this episode.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I thought the very foregrounded Littlefinger 'Origin of Hound' story in S1 was adequate prep.

You know what they did NOT make parseable enough, though? That Tyrion was cut down by one of the King's Guard.

but he go's to a resturang and then die in a toilet (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

continuing from xp: i mean, i miss basic shit all the time, so i'm not getting all high and mighty about it, but it seemed all caps obvious to me. the fear on the hound's face when stannis' fleet was consumed, his warning the head of the archers to keep the fire away from him, the way he froze when the burning guy seemed to rush him, the montage of him glancing around from one burning thing to another before he quit the field.

Didn't really think it was obvious or telegraphed at all.

I've had a hard time distinguishing between "Gold cloaks" and "King's guard" this season. Liked it better last season when every shot of the King's guard featured a close-up of the Baratheon emblem + helmet off.

I read the books but didn't put together "Hound is afraid of fire" when watching the show, it was more like, "why is Hound afraid of this screaming soldier more than that screaming soldier? Hmm I dunno."

poxen, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

when he was heading outside the gate he stopped at the captain of the archer and said something like "if any of those fucking flaming arrows comes anywhere near me i'll strangle you with your intestines" or something along those lines.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

most confusing part for me was when Tyrion was on the ground with his face slashed and he saw the horse-mounted knight with a helmet that looked like it had a stag's antlers on it, so i figured they were Stannis' Baratheon forces and not Tywin and his crew.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

xp - yeah, that warning

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

xpost Yeah that was bcuz Loras Tyrell took Renly's helmet after the latter's death. I have read the books 2x yet I forgot about that bit and I was fkin confused last night too!

btw LOVED (aka frightened by) stannis this episode, total fkin maniac. First one over the wall, last one to leave and dragged bodily at that.

but he go's to a resturang and then die in a toilet (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

what perhaps made the "fear of fire" thing a bit difficult to parse was that the hound didn't act as though he was fleeing in fear. he just slowly lumbered off. we're used to more dramatic displays of terror when it's supposed to be present.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

i'm definitely more curious about why a kings' guard was trying to kill Tyrion.

xxpost jon lewist otm, Stannis was like super-war-general. I was so RAGH WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT when he says they're going into the city even though the rest of the fleet is on fire and their men are burning alive in front of them, but when he steps over the edge of the ship i'm like OH HELL YES, and I was totally on board with him, lol.

you know who is really scary in this show? gregor clegane. he's not really what i pictured him—from the books i imagined him as a big sweaty shaggy dude. here he's big but also so... composed looking or something. scary.

in particular that scene in the last last ep on tywin's council. anyone got a shot of that?

The whole scene with Cersei and her little-one(wotsisname) in the throne room when she's about to dose him with the nightshade..nyyyyaaah. I was full of creeping dread and getting awful Flowers in The Attic vibes off her (sorry for the trashy cultural reference lol) thank CHRIST for Tywin Lannister gods be praised
