A Town Called Panic [Panique au village] (2009)

^^^ this film is hilarious, is 75 minutes long, is streaming on Netflix, is Belgian, and features a vending machine that dispenses giant waffles, among other things. Watch it, vote for it.

(Nom-stanning is ok in this thread as usual I guess)

By the way rules addendum: no video game cutscenes.

while you're here, you got a call on movies that combine live action w animation (roger rabbit, mr limpet, etc)?

The lion the witch and the wardrobe

Mordy, Friday, 25 May 2012 04:46 (eleven years ago) link

I OK'd Svankmajer's Alice; I really don't know how to feel about Roger Rabbit. Obviously many animators worked hard on the movie but many animators worked hard on Pirates of the Caribbean too. Let's say that Roger Rabbit and Mr. Limpet get in; I'll continue to case-by-case these based on seekrit algorithms.

I'm trying to decide if End of Evangelion violates my rules on being just episodes of a series smushed together.

^ o shit yeah. one of my favorite movies period.

i'd argue for the inclusion of EOE as a stand-alone work

well yeah that was my 1st thought

Cyders from Mars (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 May 2012 08:17 (eleven years ago) link

but i will accept people's fondness for it's oh-so-radical initial premise of putting double entendres in a kids' flick

can i get a ruling on

The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb (1993) ??

Cyders from Mars (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 May 2012 08:24 (eleven years ago) link

I don't get the hatred for Shrek. It's funny, it's touching, it does a remarkable inversion of the sexist Beauty and the Beast myth... Do you really think it's bad because it has maybe three double entendres (which are extra jokes, not its "premise#)? Most animated movies for kids these days have a few mature jokes for adult viewers, so I don't see how Shrek is different?

The second Shrek is still hella funny, though it's more comedic and less sentimental. The third and fourth ones are not very good, on that I agree. Puss in Boots was slightly better, but not worth nominating here.

Tuomas, Friday, 25 May 2012 08:59 (eleven years ago) link

Some Ladislaw Starewicz :

Miest Kinomatograficheskovo Operatora (The Cameraman’s Revenge)(1911)
Le Rat de Ville et le Rat Des Champs (The Town Rat and the Country Rat) (1926)
Fetiche Mascotte (The Mascot) (1933)
Le Roman de Renard (The Tale of the Fox) (1930–1939) - this was his only feature-length film, all the others listed are shorts

A++++++ would deal with again (Matt #2), Friday, 25 May 2012 09:54 (eleven years ago) link

The other Satoshi Kon films have been nominated, but let's not forget Tokyo Godfathers.

Twice Upon a Time.

diff is that shrek might very well be to blame for this awful trend

Tango (Zbigniew Rybczynski, 1981)

Count-Dracula-Down (Eric H.), Friday, 25 May 2012 11:17 (eleven years ago) link

xp

it's just kinda crass and shrill and full of unlikeable characters and possibly poisoned by what it influenced later but still doesn't deserve to be placed above even low quality Disney eg never mind all the other stuff

Cyders from Mars (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 May 2012 11:19 (eleven years ago) link

The Tune (Bill Plympton, 1992)
A Colour Box (Len Lye, 1935)

(maybe I shouldn't split the Plympton vote since I Married a Strange Person is already nommed - thanks Tuomas - but eh, there it is)

instant coffee happening between us (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 25 May 2012 11:28 (eleven years ago) link

The Phantom Tollbooth (1970)

Cyders from Mars (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 May 2012 11:32 (eleven years ago) link

Mothlight (1963)

and no doubt lots more Brakhage, that's the one that springs to mind first though.

A++++++ would deal with again (Matt #2), Friday, 25 May 2012 11:50 (eleven years ago) link

The Hobbit (1977)
