I just close my browser when I end up having too many tabs
― silverfish, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:02 (1 year ago) Permalink
also, owning a kindle + the "send to kindle" chrome app has helped reduce the amount of tabs I keep open. Now instead of having a long articles sitting unread in open tabs in my browser I have lots of long articles sitting unread on my kindle. Progress.

wait do tabs still disappear when you close browsers? Do you guys just leave it on/in sleep mode all the time? I know I am a broken record about this but not only does Opera do tab stacking (so I can group 2-50+ tabs in one tab slot) but it saves everything for my next reboot.. I only use Opera so I'd no idea how the others have let the tab lovers down!

IT also gives me a list of recently closed tabs, an option to open a new window with a private browsing session, or just to open various windows to keep all my 'work stuff' in one session, personal in another, etc. #bragging2012

Chrome gives me a list of recently closed tabs, but I have to open a new tab to be able to see it.

I think most browsers have the option of saving whatever tabs you have open when you close the browser, but I intentionnally disable this option because otherwise I'd have about thousands of open tabs by now

i just never close my browser or turn off my computer
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:16 (1 year ago) Permalink
gotcha, okay. Opera has had saved tabs for what feels like the last ten years so I couldn't imagine that browsers still "shipped" without that functionality - but turning it off, I get.

Chrome has the option to 'On start up... Continue where I left off', but I don't have it enabled.

I usually run Firefox on my Windows laptop, and it becomes unstable and crashes alot when too many tabs are open. A planded Firefox upgrade is slated to improve performance when 20+ tabs are open.
My multi-tab pet peeve: when one of your 20 open tabs (usually when first opening your browser) starts blaring noise and I can't figure out which tab has a video window that automatically starts when you visit that page. Is there a detection plugin for this?
What's the advantage of opening a new window vs. new tabs?

Leftmost tab is always ILX.

lol Gmail is always my far left tab. Ilx is usually to the right of that and then FB.
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 24 May 2012 01:23 (1 year ago) Permalink
I always open up the same three tabs first thing - FB, twitter, ilx. Always.

Me too except Gmail, ILX, FB. In that order.

do y'all find closing tabs satisfying in a 'i just cleared a row in tetris' kind of way?
Oh hell yeah.
I have more open at times (like now) when I'm writing something and I have each source I might draw from open in a tab.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 24 May 2012 02:30 (1 year ago) Permalink
At other times I might have as few as 20!
usually 3-5 windows of 10-20 pages each
every few weeks i just go 'fuck it' and stick them all in the 'read later' chrome app and then never see them again. which is why i don't like doing that.

gmail is always my leftmost/ first tab too, in fact if for some reason it gets closed I'll close em all and start again. I do the same w/ task bar at work. left/ first has to be outlook then work dbase then FF.

but never more than maybe 6 tabs? seems pointless having more, not like I'm doing that much at once.

like a zillion. 15? usually a couple of articles i read half of & know that i would be a better, more thorough person for finishing, but will never finish. an ended but still pinned ebay auction. a couple of gmails. some photologs that i will forget are open & so look at again in a tab ten tabs along. a couple of tabs that are google searches of phrases i've written while offline at night just as reminders to myself, like email ___ or club soda origins. bunches of ilx threads, all at once, so many that it edges out the icon on the tab, & then I work through them, until 0 ilx threads. you just wait for the day when you accidentally erase all of the tabs and remember that you didn't need any of them at all just not one bit because there is plenty more internet where that came from.

voted 6-9, probably where i'm usually at. 17 at the moment tho.
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 24 May 2012 13:47 (1 year ago) Permalink
let's see... 3 for email, 1 for fb, 2-3 for ilx, 5-6 ofr articles i'm kinda reading through, 4 for the website i work for, 1-2 for youtube, 1 wiki, 2 for news things, 1 for another forum i browse, 3 for sports websites. so around 20+ aat all times. i also never shut down my laptop and hate it when my browser crashes and for some reason it bugs and cannot reopen all tabs cos that means i have to open all those ebsites again.

Firefox runs so slowly for me anymore, I really should switch to Chrome or Safari. But there are a couple of particular FF customizations that make my daily internetting so much easier, and which I haven't figured out how to recreate in other browsers. But that's for another thread. Anyway, I usually have 5 or 6 tabs open...voted 6-9.

i've occasionally had 40 tabs open for work, which pretty much makes my shitty work computer grind to a halt
― mookieproof, Saturday, 26 May 2012 19:47 (11 months ago) Permalink
i also never shut down my laptop and hate it when my browser crashes and for some reason it bugs and cannot reopen all tabs
in Firefox, search for the files "sessionstore.js" and "prefs.js", and make backup copies of them occasionally. If Firefox can't reopen your tabs after it crashes, close firefox, copy the latest versions of your backups of those two files to the folder where firefox normally keeps them, and restart firefox. Your tabs will reappear.

can i just say thank god for tabs, i remember expending an inordinate amount of time and effort on positioning a dozen or more browser windows in different shapes and sizes around my screen in order to be able to click between them as quickly as possible without resorting to a godforsaken dropdown menu
