eh i just don't know man. there is so much backlash directed at every corner of popular music right now, and so much of it is made by women right now, that the "link" feels like an arbitrary correlation to bring up when it's convenient.

i obviously care, your stats show you as much

not what i was saying but cute meme. please continue with the ground breaking ilm negativity.

ehh i think this is a long-running thing. people around here might fuck w/ jj fad after years of kogan/eddy championing (i dont remember who liked them or maybe it was l'trimm they liked) but in most of the hip hop world, girls who rap & don't do so in hyper-technical super-skilled double time are pretty generally considered disposable

negativity is my ILM calling card
also deej - tupac was already well established as an artist before he became super controversial

well, obviously women have a smaller presence in the rap game than men and a harder road. but i dunno, the whole "disproportionate amount of backlash" thing, of course that can't be measured, but i kinda do wonder, if you could do a mathematical ratio of record sales-to-twitter/comments box hate, whether female rappers actually do get it worse than dudes.
― some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 17:57 (1 year ago) Permalink
like Nicki gets tons and tons of hate but i'm not sure if it's actually more than Drake or whoever
― some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 17:58 (1 year ago) Permalink
the hate drake gets is maybe gendered though, *complicating* matters
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:13 (1 year ago) Permalink
(i don't really have a stake in this dicussion. i think gucci gucci is a good song but i dislike kreayshawn.)
is Drake his own gender now?
― that is a weird thing to bring up over lean cuisine (DJP), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:14 (1 year ago) Permalink
just curious is there anyway to criticize kreayshawn that's not "groundbreakin ilx negativity" or woman hating disproportionate backlash?
― wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:15 (1 year ago) Permalink
haha i just meant that some of the hate drake gets is for being "soft," isn't it? i mean, i think he's terrible, but i do think expectations of masculinity play into the way he gets dismissed sometimes. not necessarily on ilx
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:15 (1 year ago) Permalink
horseshoe otm although i should mention that i feel the ~perception~ of drake being gendered less than hypermale is pretty surface-level & oversold. he reaffirms his masculinity constantly.

is someone keeping you from hating on kreayshawn? you're in good company, & its not like anyone is defending this song! i just didn't want to dismiss her out of hand or talk about how this is so incredibly terrible when really its just as banal as anything else.

2 chainz drops songs just as boring every week
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:18 (1 year ago) Permalink
ok maybe drake is a bad example, just strikethrough his name and say "wayne"
― some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:18 (1 year ago) Permalink
c'mon "Breakfast" is different from other random southern rap 2 Chainz features in ways other than who Kreayshawn is
― some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:19 (1 year ago) Permalink
if that exact song/video dropped with Future and his homies instead of Kreayshawn and her girls people would be chuckling at it
― some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:24 (1 year ago) Permalink
tbh I basically assume Loiter Squad is equivalent to looping that video for 12 minutes

the only 'expectations' i have is that ppl are birdmanhandrub-ing in anticipation of calling her a one hit wonder

yeah maybe there is or will be actual vitriol for "Breakfast" out there, everything i've seen has been more lol smh
― some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:38 (1 year ago) Permalink
i agree reaction to this will be overheated but its also the follow-up single to one of the most divisive rap hits of last year and is, like, unambiguously bad. sexism & schadenfreude will be a part of some reactions but al is right you can't act like this is just another 2 chainz feature, it's a notable flop from an artist with a nasal voice & generally obnoxious vibe
― flopson, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:41 (1 year ago) Permalink
wait when did we start talking about drake again

my problem with kreayshawn is basically the same as wiz khalifa, these motherfuckers aren't even rapping they're just talking in meter, barely even feels like a record, who needs that shit
― some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 18:44 (1 year ago) Permalink
well as jordan s once pointed out, what is rap but rhythmic speaking?
― twittering spinster (k3vin k.), Thursday, 24 May 2012 00:25 (1 year ago) Permalink
ok y'all are asking "what is rap" on the kreayshawn thread, ppl need to be yellow carded or put in the penalty box or some such shit

Am I being naive or does the chorus of "Breakfast" sound a ton like "Stupid Hoe"? Also she sounds so fucking bored and uninterested in this song!

its not going to do numbers, at least partly since theyve so mishandled her career -- she should have had immediate follow-ups released to GG -- but i kind of wish this would sell the hundreds of thousands it would have in the pre-internet era back before rockists got to feel self righteous every time a hugely popular artist had trouble selling CDs
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 24 June 2012 20:27 (11 months ago) Permalink
for the sake of argument -- what hugely popular gold-selling rappers of the pre-itunes era is she analogous to, just cause i can't even visualize anyone, even setting aside race or gender or w/e

candy man of 'knockin boots' fame
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 24 June 2012 20:57 (11 months ago) Permalink
idk to pick a completely random example lol
have people forgotten that, like, there were teen rap one hit wonders prior to the internet?
not that he was a teen this is more a general question that's been popping up lately for probably obvious reasons
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 24 June 2012 20:58 (11 months ago) Permalink
"Knockin' Boots" was a platinum single at a time when that was a pretty impressive feat. "Gucci Gucci" doesn't have any sales certification even in the iTunes era when any real big hit at least goes gold.
― some dude, Sunday, 24 June 2012 22:39 (11 months ago) Permalink
its impossible to compare them b/c you couldnt do on-demand streams of 'knockin boots' 35 million times back in the knocking boots era either.
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:14 (11 months ago) Permalink
are you saying there aren't popular rap songs with 35+ million youtube views AND platinum iTunes sales? is "Gucci Gucci" as popular as "Teach Me How To Dougie" in your mind or something?
― some dude, Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:19 (11 months ago) Permalink
that song was already a hit when the video dropped
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:21 (11 months ago) Permalink
correct me if im wrong
so if the video dropped earlier it would've hurt its sales? wtf are you talking about?

im talking about the road a song takes to getting to its audience. by the time the vid for 'dougie' comes out people have already paid for mp3s
― littledotheyknow (D-40), Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:47 (11 months ago) Permalink
why are we even pursuing this line of reasoning w/r/t a song for which the video was basically the engine of its success
