'Faith' is big, but there's something about the climax of the song at the end that trips me up a bit. It's like the drums come in half a beat later than expected. I've only listened to it a couple of times, mind.
Also, 'Black Lipstick' and 'Bombs' are a really cool 1-2 at the beginning. Some of the deeper cuts have yet to connect with me, but I'm willing to put more effort in. Also, SMFU is amazing.

SMFU is one of my favs; I love how minor it is. It's just this moving little song tucked toward the back of the album, a breather of sorts before the finale
― Evan R, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 05:23 (1 year ago) Permalink
It's all about Change for me. It's the wibbly wobbly Four Tet remix singing bells in the background with those subtle firework vocal harmonies at the front.
Surprised you like Faith so much, Lex. It has a slight touch of the Calvin Harris fake-rave to it. It's those handclaps that annoy me. Like guys, I live the sound of the Roland as much as anyone, but what was great about the TR series was you could change the strike velocity for a good build. Try it with those damn handclaps instead of having them on 10 the whole time!
But this is a minor quibble with an otherwise amazing album. There's not a duff song here. Even the slow burners. Especially thd slow burners. I mean - Scripture? DAMN!

i listened to the new track once & it was awesome but this dreadful working-in-an-office stint is so unconducive to listening to music, i don't know how people cope
i think i love "faith" a lot because of its position in the album - it's a tremendous work of build-and-release in its own right but also within the context of the whole thing. i wouldn't nec isolate it as the album's most impressive song ("black lipstick" or "scripture" imo) but the sheer rush it elicits is perhaps armor on's most impressive moment
― liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 09:39 (1 year ago) Permalink
OTM, 'Faith' works because there's only one of it and it's perfectly timed within the flow of the album. It's like dropping a big anthem at exactly the right point in a DJ set as opposed to just playing back-to-back big anthems with deadening effect.

Oh! the new track has that singing bowls sound that I was loving so much on it.
Also crazy disco string arpeggios. I am loving the attention to detail on the production of this thing.

Wow. Every time I think it can't get any better, it does. It's like one of those videogames where it keeps going up to another level and then another one and then another. The ~sonic textures~ ... this really is just a walking exercise in what ~sonic textures~ are and should be. Also the things her voice does at the end. I don't know if it's digital manipulation (and not even the obvious pitch-shifting) or if she's really singing that but the way the main and backing vocals twine together from 3:00 on - I don't even care if it's manipulated but some of those swoops and especially where she goes up the octave at about 3:25 - the vocal arrangements are like some John Tavener kinda shit.

I love how "I Care For U" teases (threatens?) to drop but never does. I think that's my issue with this new Dawn track; when it actually breaks open it's not so thrilling.
But the sonic details on it really are incredible

It's just the intricacy of the polyphony that is completely slaying me. There is just such detail, the composition is just staggering.
