Sabaton: most definitely not stoner/psych/doom/sludge/retro/drone/space.

Hellhamster 2: Hamster Smashed Face (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 01:32 (eleven years ago) link

True, that rascally Sabaton just slipped into the brood like a Cuckoo bird.

Any of you fans of The Devil's Blood and Blood Ceremony heard the Jess and the Ancient Ones? I'd think this would be an ILM favorite, given how high the aforementioned bands placed in the metal poll. Perhaps because it's a debut from Finland, and not a lot of coverage yet. You can get the CD/vinyl with free shipping for $15 or under from Svart, and tack on Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats if you don't already have that - http://www.svartrecords.com/shoppe/1018-jess-and-the-ancient-ones-cd.html

Orcus Chylde (World Of Sound) Jun 15
I'm listening to this right now on the Soggy Bog cast - http://thesoggybogofdoom.podomatic.com/entry/2012-05-01T20_53_52-07_00. I don't normally listen to podcasts, but this is a great one, with Mastodon covering Feist (!), new Candlemass and Ahab, Terra Firma, Burning Saviours, Abramis Brama, etc. New six piece band from Germany, this review mentions Graveyard and Witchcraft, but a bit more dreamy with organ bits.

Kadavar (Tee Pee) Jul 10
Just as good but more raucous and garagey is Kadavar from Berlin. The vinyl is already available on import from This Charming Man, and comes out in the U.S. on Tee Pee. I love the sound of the drums on this. The label drops names like Sabbath, Hawkwind and Witchfinder General. "You can’t reinvent the wheel, but you can roll it!"

Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight - Going Home - St Albans band formed in 2006, and play bluesy stoner rock with a touch of sludge/doom, along the lines of Wo Fat. 2009 album Movin On is worth hearing too, both free!
http://trippywicked.bandcamp.com/album/going-home

Sun Preachers - Faces Of Ashes - French stoner/psych. Really kicks on on "Nail King". Was free, now a whopping $.50.

Blues Pills - Bliss EP (Crusher)
While I die of anticipation for the Spiders album, here is another great rockin' female lead band from the same Swedish label. ATIH blurb: "After departing from Radio Moscow in September 2011, drummer Cory Berry and bass player Zack Anderson joined up with Swedish lead singer Elin Larsson and Swedish drummer Jonas Askerlund. Heavy, driving bass lines, colossal drums (via Jonas Moses Askerlund, drummer of Swedish band Dead Man), and Berry’s ferocious, riff based, soul-penetrating guitar work are a sublime compliment to the vocalist. Tied together by the soulful Elin Larson (sometimes singing in her mother-tongue), her stage presence gives one the impression of being seduced by some Valkyrie’s love song — or maybe her battle cry." On vinyl 10-inch or MP3s on Amazon.

That first Trippy Wicked album is great, I think I nominated and voted for it in that year's metal poll.

two weeks pass...

Two great new releases this week, Orcus Chylde and Witch Mountain. The debut from Orcus Chylde is out on Friday June 15. From Germany, they were part of the historic lineup at April's Desertfest in Berlin. They tap into a mix of proto-metal, doom and folk that's usually associated with Swedes like Witchcraft, Dead Man and Sienna Root. Soda Shop Review | Kozmik Artifactz

xp from Rolling Metal - Witch Mountain - Cauldron of the Wild. I'll get one at the show on Saturday. Profound Lore | All That Is Heavy | Amazon

one month passes...

As mentioned previously, Kadavar came out on top of new releases this week. Highly recommended.

Wight - Through The Woods Into Deep Water (Bilocation/Fat & Holy)
German stoner/psych band Wight caught my attention last year with Wight Weedy Wight. Their new one just became available last week on Bandcamp at name yr price, and it's a significant step forward. | Soda Shop
http://wight.bandcamp.com/album/through-the-woods-into-deep-water

Ice Dragon - Dream Dragon (Yersinia Pestis)
"Ice Dragon is the bonfire in the woods that you and your degenerate friends would try to jump over at the end of the night." Name yr price! Their third album in just over a year. Unstoppable psych/prog/doom madmen. Took me a while to get over their low-fi sound, but am on board now.
http://icedragon.bandcamp.com/album/dream-dragon

The Shrine - Primitive Blast (Tee Pee)
"I've got no eternity and I've got no past, I've got no destiny man, my future's fading fast, I'm a Primitive Blast" Venice Beach hard rockin' trio The Shrine mix skatepunk, thrash and basic hard rock for their hyperactive sophomore album.

At Devil Dirt - Chapter II - Vulgo gratissimus auctor (At Devil Dirt)
Can't believe I didn't mention this earlier. First album was one of my favorites last year. New one has a bit of a darker mood, slower, heavier. Available now for $4, CD out on Aug 31.
http://atdevildirt.bandcamp.com/releases

Captain Crimson - Dancing Madly Backwards (Transubstans) Aug 29
Also out in Aug, writers can contact the label to review. One of my favorites, they reference proto-metal like Leaf Hound, November, Mountain, and fellow Swedes Witchcraft and Graveyard. This is keeping me entertained just fine while I await new Witchcraft and Spiders. | Soda Shop

Elder - Spires Burn EP (Armageddon)
Two-track vinyl-only EP totaling 22:33 of mindbending psychedelic doom. They destroyed at a recent show in Chicago. Wish they'd put it on CD, but MP3s can be found, and short samples available here: http://beholdtheelder.bandcamp.com/

Thanks for the heads up on the new Wight and At Devil Dirt. Liked the last ones a lot.

two weeks pass...

I spent last week's staycation at home with a cold migrating my site to a new host and WordPress platform. Worst vacation ever, but at least my site is live, and now RSS/blog friendly. It still needs tweaks -- any WP gurus who have recommendations for plug-ins or improvements on the stylesheet, do let me know! I'm also going to put all my lists into a database as soon as I refresh/update my SQL and PHP skills. http://fastnbulbous.com/

Anyway, I'm already posting much more frequently, and relevant to this thread is Most Anticipated Releases – Fall 2012

Colour Haze – She Said (Elektrohasch) Aug/Sep
Graveyard – Lights Out (Nuclear Blast) Oct 26
Witchcraft – Legend (Nuclear Blast) Sep 21

Spiders – Flash Point (Crusher) Oct 5
Tame Impala – Lonerism (Modular) Oct 9
Wo Fat – The Black Code (Small Stone) Nov

Captain Crimson – Dancing Madly Backwards (Transubstans) Aug 29

I'm going to Supernormal festival in Oxfordshire next week, and have heard of relatively few of the bands playing. I was wondering if psych/ drone/ freak types could recommend some acts for me to see? many thanks!

it does!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

There's a ton of those I haven't heard, but The Cosmic Dead is a number-one absolute must see. Schedule your day around that, if needed. Their live stuff I've heard is phenomenal.

yeah they're both on the list too, I would think they'll be relatively high up the bill as well.

ugh at that blurb

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

Sounds like I need to check out Kogumaza then!

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

Kogumaza are good, I think they reward concentration if you get me

I saw the Dagger Brothers years ago at a club night. they played after The Bug and came straight on stage as they have no equipment aside from backing tapes; their set consisted of following the MCs (Warrior Queen and possibly Flowdan?) around while they were trying to pack up, and being 'homoerotic' towards in in an unsuccessful effort to provoke them. then one of them jumped off the stage and broke a girl's ribs. also I was introduced to one of them a long time after this and in lieu of shaking my hand he bit it hard enough to break the skin

anyway I just wanted to mention I hate them

price lo matalan (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

Bear in mind I'm not a metaller, but here's my round-up.

Essential:
The Telescopes
Sylvester Anfang II
Kogumaza
Bilge Pump

Highly Recommended:
Cold Pumas
Cosmic Dead
Embla Quickbeam
La La Vasquez
The Pheromoans
Sauna Youth
Shudder Pulps
The Sticks

Recommended:
Covergirl
Fairhorns (this is Matt Team Brick, if I had seen him I'm sure it'd be more than recommended, but is this low solely because I have not yet witnessed this particular act)
The Family Elan
Fat Bicth
Hamilton Yarns
Sweet Williams
Woolf

Ones that didn't make it into this list are still probably brilliant. Also, it's not clear when the 'Bang the Bore' stuff is on but if you get a chance to see Bolide, who are involved with that, then do. If you like poetry even a little bit then go and see Keston Sutherland. If you like poetry more than a little then also go and see Francesca Lisette and Alan Hay.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

Cheers Emily, so basically I can't go too far wrong! I actually knew Matt Team Brick a little bit when I lived in Bristol over ten years ago- Bugbrand is from the same scene, so I'll definitely be catching both of them.

On the arts side, I'm going to play that by ear I should think. Lots of interesting looking things there too...

Can't disagree with everything said above, just to add that Shigeru Ihara is worth seeing in whatever guise he's playing under so I wouldn't miss Scotch Bonnet either.

If you're into things like The Heads, White Hills, et al, can recommend You’re Smiling Now But We’ll All turn into DEMONS. Not seen them live, but recently picked up their _Contact High_ album & it's great.

four weeks pass...

I felt compelled to bang out some reviews this week. Not sure how long this bug will stay up my butt. For several years I felt it unnecessary to write reviews when approximately three dozen sources all had reviews, but lately the albums I'm liking aren't getting much coverage at all, so I figured I should chip in.

Tagged several times today on FB about those guys. So what's their story?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

Also, not quite a Stoner/Psych/Sludge/Retro/Space band, but I think when they pull out songs like this, they might be worth the attention of people who want Stoner/Psych/Sludge/Retro/Space. I don't know maybe the second is a stretch, but it's pretty heavy to my ears. (Annoying yell at the end is from the host for this show, not a band member.)

And since it hasn't been mentioned much at all on ILM, here's the whole Yamantaka/Sonic Titan album from last year (which I think is going to be issued in the U.S. this year? but not totally clear on that):

http://music.cbc.ca/#/play/CBC-Music/playlist/Yamantaka-Sonic-Titan-YTST

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:00 (eleven years ago) link

I only just heard this album today, so I have even less than usual discourse to provide.

YT // ST is the debut album from prog-metal-avant-garde-opera art collective and hyphen necessitators YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN. The band was formed in 2007 in Montreal, but now spends much of its time in Toronto.

The band is centred on drummer Alaska B and singer Ruby Kato Attwood, who are both of Anglo-Asian origin. This juxtaposition is reflected all over the work, from the band’s name to the new genre of music they’ve coined “noh-wave” (a reference to a form of Japanese dance theatre and the no-wave post-punk musical movement).

They like Boris.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

Apologies if you're trying to keep the prog-metal-avant-garde-opera music off the Stoner/Psych/Doom/Sludge/Retro/Drone/Space thread.

Saw Lumerians tonight. They were pretty good! I love this first paragraph of their wikipedia page

Lumerians is a San Francisco Bay Area based five-member[1] band which has a psychedelic[3][8] "mindbender"[9] space rock[1] sound. The group is notable for performances characterized by "transcendent live video projections" and having "incredible visuals," according to one music critic.[1] One critic described the band as "Oakland's prize pony in the Bay Area gloom-folk horse race".[8] The sound has been compared to the German experimental music known as Krautrock with overtones of 1960s music.[1]
