My little brother’s EP drops today.11/11His name is 00Genesis.The future of the future.Get it. NOW.

I'll be hunting for 00Genesis later today along with Jaxon's additions.

I grabbed this compilation in search of 00Genesis and unearthed some other gems in that Flying Lotus/off-kilter Sa-Ra beats/Post-Dilla vein:

http://www.discogs.com/release/1221095

A1 Powell (7) Dimension X
A2 Jackhigh Arachnid Eyes
A3 Rustie Dog Mask
B1 Hubert Daviz Smut Cut
B2 fLako Inside
B3 00Genesis Dream Catcher

Also found a Jackhigh project (album? compilation?) that featured 00Genesis called Interplanetary Thoughts.

Been a bit busy to keep up with this thread this week, so hoperfully I'll be able to do that over the weekend. Btw, I'm totally down w/ international additions and some chop n thump instrumentals, so long as they don't become the focus of the thread (which they haven't, carry on).

The Reverend, Saturday, 17 January 2009 10:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Remember when Britney and Waajeed were photographed together?

I can't find this. :-/

I've mostly been avoiding instrumentals, but I thought 00Geneis was worth nothing being Muhsinah's brother.

However, if occasionally welcomed: guided by seeking more JackHigh, I also grabbed a compilation called "Metro Sampler Line 2&3" that has some more of this off-kilter, sampler based, rhodes heavy, beats that fits the bill.

THE SUGGEST BANS! THEY DO NOTHING!! (PappaWheelie V), Sunday, 18 January 2009 00:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Waajeed got too much to name. there's so much that i've found it hard to even know where to start with him. suggestions other than the usual remixes etc?

Flying Lotus is some nasty shit.

Did you all follow directions and download the pre-Abundance mixtape? Lots of remixes, TWO different versions of "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," good-ish stuff. Album's probably tighter.

this kid i used to know in LA djs this kinda stuff.

i'm currently listening to his peven everett mix. it's mostly his upbeat housey stuff, but he's got some weirder slow stuff too. definitely a name to check out.

it's funny how this stuff started in detroit but is so LA centric now. guess it makes sense since jay dee moved there and sa-ra is from there.

Matt, I need to pick up your suggestions asap. Booting slsk won't happen for a bit though.

Thanks for keeping this alive! Will report back.

this PPP album is a lot better than i thought it would be. prefer the stuff that isnt so locked into the dilla-ish drum programming but its interesting. the first single they leaked had me worried they were trying to do the 60s soul pastiche thing.

uk grime faggot (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 22 January 2009 08:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I like how they use retro-soul more as a starting point than as an end unto itself.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2009 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh man, this thread is so great and appreciated. It is totally hooking me up with stuff I was looking for when I started this thread: Contemporary mellow jazzy soul...

the last 2 are primarily instrumental. samiyam even does a weird (not necessarily good) remix of soldier boy's "crank that"

musinah seems a lot like GAM to me. not sure if i like her. screechy singing all over the place and not very songful.

anyone like frank mccomb? hes very neo soul but not in the posery/too cool way, very donny hathaway influenced, to the point where its almost like glenn lewis and stevie wonder. still like him though, but i wish he had some better lyrics on some of his songs. theyre as inane as a lot of modern R&B, just less noticeably so cos the music and singing are so 'deep'.

i listened to Flying Lotus' "Los Angeles" and honestly, it was kinda really boring. no songs, no basslines, no samples, just beats and weird noises. kinda lost me. his bbc essential mix is still pretty rad though.

the j*davey album is great

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Monday, 26 January 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago) link

The Flying Lotus album didn't make a huge impression on me, either. I haven't gone back to it. Maybe I should, maybe I shouldn't.

Woops, meant Garth podcast of Georgia Anne. On 1st listen, it's decent, with some exclusives. Will listen again soon.

haha on the GAM comparison, considering my mixup above. Although I don't get the "screechy" accusation on Muhsinah. Screechy is how I define much of the R&B out there, as Tombe Lockhart says in the interview posted above.

so very late on this particular bandwagon but my brothe just sent me Tide's Arising by Mark de Clive-Lowe and "Slide" is like the perfect mix of Prince and house music, woot

Gotta admit...it was that album that opened the door for me to revisit the Broken Beat meets Neo-Soul thing, which surely led me to this, but I don't think they're exactly the same. I got into Mark and Ticklah thanks to DJ Spinna colabs.

i listened to Flying Lotus' "Los Angeles" and honestly, it was kinda really boring. no songs, no basslines, no samples, just beats and weird noises

I consider Flying Lotus, 00Genesis, Jackhigh, et al to be a sub-genre. Not R&B, although, occasionally in an R&B mode.

xp

I mean, I'm not saying you are rong about Muhsinah and GAM being similar, just the rest. ; )

The Reverend (rev), Monday, 26 January 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link

tbh i only heard her once a few months back and i prob should reinvestigate just to make sure i was right or not but i dont know if i want to repeat that experience.

The Reverend (rev), Monday, 26 January 2009 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

weird. the tracks on her myspace arent like the ones that were there last year at all. these are nicer. not very GAM at all.

for the record, day.break has been my favorite album on this whole thread (probably of the whole decade). not just saying it to pile up. i'm really blown away by it. i just know contrarian ass ilm would'nt agree if stated (and probably won't anyway), so i was hoping everyone would find it on their own and at least have no expectations

xxp

xpost - that flying lotus album has pretty good bass if you listen to it on a good system. i find if i hear it just on my PC speakers a lot of the low end disappears.

Finally, some of this has come in.

So far, not half as good as the Fader Suite903. Musinah gives way to IDM, Dubstep or whatever, inst Acid Jazz, Electro, but...

This Mara TK & Jake One track is great.

Om'mas Keith Prince-a-like track with Talk Box is great

Samiyam and Hudson Mohawke's "Eff This" is a *fantastic* beat that begs for a great vocal

Waiting for the rest.
