And action figures.

nickn, Saturday, 19 May 2012 07:13 (eleven years ago) link

following Big Bang Theory would probably be the best possible option for the show to pick up "normal" viewers.

Harmon speaks, says he will not be involved with the show.

Fans will annoyingly tout that last night's episode was the "real Series Finale" of Community. I'll hate them, but they might be right.

Community 2.0 might be awesome, but as far as any vision of the original creative team, this was the real series finale.

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 08:23 (eleven years ago) link

geez harmon's blog post is kind of devastating.

Weinman pretty good here: http://www2.macleans.ca/2012/05/19/the-community-brouhaha/

Looking at the resumes of the new runners-- never seen Happy Endings. Why isn't it on Hulu? Never heard of Aliens in America. Just Shoot Me? Ugh, the worst.

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 09:32 (eleven years ago) link

still haven't seen the last 3, but I'm glad it sounds like he got to complete an arc.

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:09 (eleven years ago) link

Love the part of Harmon's tumblr post about NBC brass predictably wrongfully assuming that fucked-over creative talent will not go away mad.

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:14 (eleven years ago) link

harmon is so totally fucked over with his contractually guaranteed paycheck for doing nothing after trying so hard to get fired for three years, i feel for him

thomp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:20 (eleven years ago) link

can you figure out the error in your logic?

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

The same contract also gives me the same salary and title if I spend all day masturbating and playing Prototype 2. And before you ask yourself what you would do in my situation: buy Prototype 2. It’s fucking great.

the limits of my sympathy for this person show no bounds

thomp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:55 (eleven years ago) link

this clearly has been his goal since the pilot

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:59 (eleven years ago) link

I know I'm the minority on ilx but I hate Happy Endings -- it is so smug and cynical. RIP Community, I wish it could have ended properly with the finale.

Surely we've learned by this point that speculating on Community's future is a waste of time and energy? I'm happy to wait for season four before writing it off.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:11 (eleven years ago) link

you picked the weirdest to place on this board to suggest everyone knows speculating on Community's future is a waste of time and energy.

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:13 (eleven years ago) link

like, yeah, i'll check out season 4, but there's a new head chef at the restaurant the old one created. it's fair to be concerned.

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:14 (eleven years ago) link

i've really enjoyed the first three seasons of this show. i'm sure the writing will not be as strong for the fourth season, yet as long as alison brie continues to be an actress on it, i will continue to watch it. no matter who is in charge.

Mordy, Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:33 (eleven years ago) link

Season 4 will mostly be improvised Chevy Chase pratfalls.

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

Opening episode of season an homage to The Chevy Chase Show.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:47 (eleven years ago) link

Without Harmon, Chase is more likely to get his way. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that won't be a good thing.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:51 (eleven years ago) link

We may actually get to see a 13-episode homage to The Chevy Chase Show, if we're lucky!

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:52 (eleven years ago) link

I'm really interested in people's contracts at this point, both wrt the writers and the cast. I mean, I'd imagine most people will stay put if they have nowhere else to go for the moment, but if, say, Donald Glover gets a sweet offer and his contract doesn't inextricably bind him to the show, I wouldn't be surprised if he split.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

I'd be quite surprised if they agreed a fourth season without signing up the main actors (possible exception = Ken Jeong).

Most of the cast, except possibly Yvette and maybe Gillian Jacobs, could easily break out and do their own thing these days. Willing to bet on Danny Pudi appearing in whatever Harmon decides to do next as well.

Other things I liked from the last couple of episodes:

- Abed as plumber was awesome
- "JEFFREY!... oh, hey Britta"
- RAVING DEAN
- Leonard lives with Sexy Dreadlock Guy

Also I love how there's apparently only one policeman in the Greendale area and that guy rules. Shame we didn't get any Garrett or Magnitude in the finale though.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:06 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I'm sure a lot of the actors are just glad they'll be working another year, but for anyone with a future outside of the show they might not want to be involved with a season that will likely be mercilessly picked apart by critics and fans.

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

Or, y'know, it might be good? As was mentioned upthread, the Community universe is pretty well-defined by this point, although I think we're unlikely to get anything totally batshit like the chaos theory episode or the Dean doing Apocalypse Now.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:12 (eleven years ago) link

Things like Leonard's YouTube clips and the constant references to his rich non-campus life are one of the brilliant things I'm going to miss. There's no way in hell any more trad-oriented-staff is going to have those included with the same deft touch.

Choad of Choad Hall (kingfish), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:20 (eleven years ago) link

I've seen Happy Endings, so I have my doubts. xp

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:20 (eleven years ago) link

These new scab show runners won't be in any position to fight the network on anything

This will be Sony's vision of what Community could have been like without all that weird stuff

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not writing the next season off altogether. I still love the cast and the writers. However, the more diminished the old-school team becomes, the more strikes it has against its potential success.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

Not to mention that whoever's left is likely to feel somewhat demoralized by the bowdlerizing of the show.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

as upsetting as it is to hear that a shitty person got fired for being bad at their job lol @ thinking that what dan harmon brought to the show was 'funny jokes' or, yknow, remotely irreplaceable

Lamp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think you have to think highly of dan harmon to realize that tv shows are like ecosystems that can be easily unbalanced, esp by seismic shifts in staffing, writers, etc. if you liked the show until now, dan had at least something to do with that (either as a writer himself, as an editor, as a manager, whatever myriad tasks he was responsible for).

Mordy, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

So how was Harmon bad at his job?

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

I mean Bob Oedenkirk could be kind of a dick but I'm glad he wasn't fired from Mr. Show and replaced with like Drew Carey.

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

he couldnt deliver a show his bosses were satisfied with?

like idk i had this whole sarcastic thing about how rare it is in hollywood to find a verbally abusive writer with a drinking problem and an inflated sense of their own importance or w/e but harmon fought publicly with the shows biggest star and 'privately' with other writers/producers delivered shows late had problems managing budget/time seemed to actively delight in not compromising w/the studio blah blah blah

Lamp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

the dude calls his blog dan harmon poops... what a visionary

Lamp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah but your blog is called Lampfelches

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

i also have a drinking problem and have watched other tv shows before, maybe i can run community

Lamp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

not to mention all those abusive voicemails chevy chase has left for me

Lamp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

Satisfying the stupidest people in the world is a job I hope we all fail at

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe Harmon can get the Black Sabbath drummer gig.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

P. sure getting rid of Harmon is just one facet of an intricately-plotted latticework of decisions that will rocket NBC back to the top of the heap. Or, more likely, this was a decision not unlike the one to burn off and quickly get rid of Bent and Best Friends Forever (i.e. "I'm the new guy so fuck the old guy's stuff why because of my big swinging ego.").

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

Although, yeah, I'm sure there's some historical precedent a la Letterman and Norm MacDonald and Al Franken. NBC execs don't cotton to guff.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

Most executives don't, though, to be fair to NBC (even though they're soulless cretins).

You know, I was going to talk about how much I enjoyed the last few episodes but instead I am just going to back away from this thread

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

like mordy, i am bummed about this but will watch season 4 regardless

Nhex, Saturday, 19 May 2012 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

Harmon was horrible at his job and only wanted to get fired and anyone who thinks otherwise is obviously a fan of Community.
