Harmon will be a consulting producer. Two guys responsible for Just Shoot Me are joining the show and taking over. RIP.

oh, here's a link from Vulture so you don't have click on Deadline: http://www.vulture.com/2012/05/dan-harmon-community-future-nbc-sony.html

apparently they were writers on Happy Endings so that's vaguely comforting.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that's really the only promising sign. It's likely going to be a very different show, even if not obviously so on the surface.

"The duo are known for balancing quirky with mainstream comedy" ugh rip

Clay, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:22 (eleven years ago) link

Fans will annoyingly tout that last night's episode was the "real Series Finale" of Community. I'll hate them, but they might be right.

I think this might be a good thing. The cast is good. The writers are good. Dan Harmon was constantly on the verge of losing control of the plot and/or his own mind. If this had happened between the first and second seasons, it might spell disaster. The Greendale universe is pretty well defined at this point, though, and these guys aren't going to want to fuck that up.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:39 (eleven years ago) link

If I was in NBC's position I'd probably have sacked him too tbh

Simon H., Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:40 (eleven years ago) link

Is it weird that I love Community but pretty much find Dan Harmon to be a horrible person?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:41 (eleven years ago) link

Sony sacked him, not NBC.

I'm interested to see where the writers go, but Community never really had that calm, consistent quality of a Parks & Rec. It's greatest moments have been its intelligently outlandish aspects, and Harmon knows a lot about TV and sitcoms and arcs and dramatic blah-diddy-blah. I hope I'm wrong though, but I don't think they can somehow pull an emotional moment like Troy "sacrificing himself" to the Air Conditioner Repair unit without him.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:45 (eleven years ago) link

If Chris McKenna and Megan Ganz stay on board, I won't be worried about the show's heart. Even so, I have to imagine that a zillion talented writers are jumping at the chance to work on Community now that Harmon has departed.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:49 (eleven years ago) link

The decisions about the show's fate seem to be at cross-purposes. I get sacking Harmon, I get ordering a low-faith 13-episode season, but I don't get doing both. It seems like they might as well have just cut their losses and cancelled the thing. Although I guess it might not be too late to do just that?

Also, I think Sony's "showrunners, shmoe-runners" comment betrays a real lack of understanding wrt how many of the fans probably see Harmon and the show as inseparable.

idk how to feel about this. dan harmon is so transparent with everything that i've found him very interesting to watch/follow, but i agree that it's seemed like he was about to go off the rails at any moment. i also have had some low-level dissatisfaction with the show for a while now -- the emotional arcs have started to feel stagnant and repetitive, and some of the concept episodes have played up the concept at the expense of the comedy. i know everyone stans for S2 of the show, but i really loved S1, even the rougher early episodes. that whole "sitting around the study table, telling jokes" stuff was my favorite and the more they moved away from that, the less connected i felt to the show. the idea that new showrunners = renewed focus on simplicity and jokes is kind of appealing to me, but then again what if the jokes get hacky and bad? idk.

the minister of RAILWAYS (reddening), Saturday, 19 May 2012 04:16 (eleven years ago) link

that said i really enjoyed all three of last night's episodes, and i think troy has had a great arc this year. i am more tired of jeff's tired platitude-speeches (including the "annie here's why we can't be together" ones that he gave like five times this season) and the "abed is broken" episodes.

the minister of RAILWAYS (reddening), Saturday, 19 May 2012 04:19 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, Abed's character was really mistreated this year and was one of my least favorite aspects of S3. Hope they pull back from exploiting his condition (whatever it may be) in the future.

McKenna's gone too

The decisions about the show's fate seem to be at cross-purposes. I get sacking Harmon, I get ordering a low-faith 13-episode season, but I don't get doing both.

NBC ordered the episodes from Sony, Sony sacked (or hired someone new for his job without talking to him) Harmon.

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Saturday, 19 May 2012 06:34 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I just saw that about McKenna. Megan Ganz's tweet is a bit cryptic...is she talking about Harmon, McKenna or herself?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 06:37 (eleven years ago) link

I assume Harmon. They were known to work together closely and I believe he gave her her first tv job.

Clay, Saturday, 19 May 2012 06:40 (eleven years ago) link

Apparently the Russo Brothers are out too. If Harmon doesn't stay on day-to-day, one presumes Ganz will be sending resumes within the hour.

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Saturday, 19 May 2012 06:50 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the second-in-commands left to do their own show. That's why I worry for the continuity of tone. Sony just wants to retool it and pray to get it up to syndication.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 19 May 2012 06:57 (eleven years ago) link

Not that this is a show that would ever do that well in syndication, but I guess it doesn't take all that much to make a decent amount of cash from it.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 19 May 2012 06:58 (eleven years ago) link

syndication rights in the us have already been bought by comedy central, but I'm not sure if that's provisional re: a certain number of episodes.

Clay, Saturday, 19 May 2012 06:59 (eleven years ago) link

god, if we end up with an entirely new writing staff AND harmon doesn't stay on in any capacity? jesus. i really wish ganz at least would stay.

the minister of RAILWAYS (reddening), Saturday, 19 May 2012 07:00 (eleven years ago) link

the real money in syndication will be when they get to 85 (though 100 is better) and local affiliates pick it up (like 30 Rock, etc). Getting a spot on Comedy Central is good but not the kind of windfall the studio wants. xpost

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 19 May 2012 07:04 (eleven years ago) link

85 or 100 doesn't matter. There won't be a clamoring demand for the rights to show Community every weeknight at 7:30 after your Big Bang Theory airing. Half the episodes at this point are so bizarre that people just tuning in will have no idea what they're seeing.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 07:08 (eleven years ago) link

All the money to ever be made from Community will be in dvd/digital sales.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 May 2012 07:09 (eleven years ago) link

And action figures.

nickn, Saturday, 19 May 2012 07:13 (eleven years ago) link

following Big Bang Theory would probably be the best possible option for the show to pick up "normal" viewers.

Community 2.0 might be awesome, but as far as any vision of the original creative team, this was the real series finale.

Looking at the resumes of the new runners-- never seen Happy Endings. Why isn't it on Hulu? Never heard of Aliens in America. Just Shoot Me? Ugh, the worst.

still haven't seen the last 3, but I'm glad it sounds like he got to complete an arc.

Love the part of Harmon's tumblr post about NBC brass predictably wrongfully assuming that fucked-over creative talent will not go away mad.

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:14 (eleven years ago) link

harmon is so totally fucked over with his contractually guaranteed paycheck for doing nothing after trying so hard to get fired for three years, i feel for him

can you figure out the error in your logic?

da croupier, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

The same contract also gives me the same salary and title if I spend all day masturbating and playing Prototype 2. And before you ask yourself what you would do in my situation: buy Prototype 2. It’s fucking great.

the limits of my sympathy for this person show no bounds

thomp, Saturday, 19 May 2012 12:55 (eleven years ago) link

this clearly has been his goal since the pilot

I know I'm the minority on ilx but I hate Happy Endings -- it is so smug and cynical. RIP Community, I wish it could have ended properly with the finale.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:07 (eleven years ago) link

Surely we've learned by this point that speculating on Community's future is a waste of time and energy? I'm happy to wait for season four before writing it off.
