i had visions of it being one of those sad little polls with six posts and two votes, but you came through, ilm. you came through.

pederasts and 80s mullets, bringing us together as always.

I have this habit of really babbling when I watch the lil one by myself...she was yelling because she wanted more bananas and I wasn't cutting them fast enough...I caught myself saying - outloud - ” Hold your horses there Benny Mardones”

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 18 May 2012 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

you were a fool separating her from her banana

If this thread has achieved nothing else, I doubt that I'll ever again lump Benny Mardones in with the yacht rock crowd.

Ninja Rap (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 18 May 2012 23:43 (eleven years ago) link

as Ned and strongo pointed otu, Mardones is closer to the Bad Company-Michael Bolton crowd anyway.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 May 2012 23:45 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, this was never really apparent to me on the basis of the one creepy Mardones song I'd ever heard before this thread.

Richard Marx owes a lot to these dudes.

Richard Marx's mullet owes a lot to these dudes' mullets.

They paved the way for parties in the back.

Richard Marx was a pop guy; he worked for Lionel Richie and Madonna.

that d.l. byron song would sound right in place on one of the rhino american power pop compilations.

get wolves (get bent), Saturday, 19 May 2012 01:52 (eleven years ago) link

then they should be destroyed posthaste

this is what i love about ILM.... i come here looking to read up and chat about my cult-fave indie bands, only to find we're all exhuming the recorded legacy of Benny Mardones

i swear that "listen to the heartbeat" song was the Chevrolet jingle used for several years during the '80s. I can't decide which is worse....

actually the only thing I knew DL byron for was an appearance on the times square soundtrack, he covers "you can't hurry love"!

(not on youtube)

looking good squashed between "babylon's burning" and "walk on the wild side" there DL

modern english had the same thing happen down to the rerecording for new label like a year later w/ 'i melt w/ you', though there it didn't chart either time nearly as high as benny did both times w/ 'if i could fly'. i'm trying to think of other similar instances this has happened w/ us charts/radio

UB40 - "Red, Red Wine" (also because some DJ inexplicably started playing it years after it was first a hit)
Hall & Oates - "She's Gone"
Aerosmith - "Dream On"
Steve Winwood - "Valerie" (remixed but with no additional parts recorded)
4 Seasons - "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)" (remix) - charted in 1976 and 1994
Lee Greenwood - "God Bless the USA" - top 20 country hit in 1984 and 2001, the latter after the terrorist attacks

There are several others that re-charted due to their prominent inclusion in popular movies (i.e. "Bohemian Rhapsody" from Wayne's World or "Unchained Melody" in Ghost), or immediately after the artist died.

Benny seems to hold the record for longest time between charting twice with the exact same record though, if you discount event-related revivals.

What about Sheriff's "When I'm With You"?

if i'm honest (and wildly generalising) i feel this whole shitty subfusc undie machinery has denied us a kinda random white dude variety in pop music - like what would your peter gabriels or robert palmers or thomas dolbys or whatever be doing if they were 21 now yknow

I finally realized yesterday that Benny Mardones reminds me of Gordana from Project Runway, loool

or it's just me, shrug

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 May 2012 00:07 (eleven years ago) link

Like some others here I always thought this was Steve Perry or some such - the "if i could fly, i'd pick you up" chorus is pure Journey, but the slightly jazzy piano and celeste licks were a tipoff that it had to be someone else, like maybe Lou Gramm guest-vocaled on a Brenda Russell track or something. Really didn't know, just one of those songs I heard on the radio that so blended into the background I never gave much thought to who it might be. I hope the next time i hear it on the piped-in music feed, I don't think "Yeaahhh!! Benny!"....

Maybe "She's So French" was him misunderstanding where Montreal was located.
